Dealing with unsupportive partner

Lol. I went to six surgery for a consult and the surgeon was so casual about it like this is a 45 min procedure, you’ll be fine. Meanwhile my partner thought everything down there was “normal.” And I get it he’s not wrong technically. But I'm feeling self-conscious about the looks. Like, every time I look in a mirror or wear certain underwear, it bothers me. It’s not about him at all.

Has anyone else dealt with an unsupportive (or clueless) partner? How did you explain it without getting defensive?

TL;DR at the bottom if you can't be bothered.

So I went down a rabbit hole. Started as "let me check out one of these for fun" and ended with me running 10 different subscriptions in parallel, taking notes, comparing image quality, voice calls, memory, and how creepy/wholesome each one feels. Two months later, $400+ poorer, here's the breakdown nobody asked for.

I tried to be fair. Some of these are positioned as wholesome companions. Some are unapologetically adult. I judged each on what they're actually trying to do, not on a single standard.

1. Candy AI - The polished default

If you only try one, this is it. The image generation is on another level (V2 engine, very consistent character look across sessions), Live Action video clips actually move convincingly now, and the chat doesn't feel like a chatbot. They have over 100 pre-made characters plus a builder with like 47 customization parameters, so you can either pick someone or design them.

Pros: Best multimedia experience, image consistency is real, native iOS+Android apps, EU-regulated company in Malta.

Cons: Free tier is super stingy (2 images a day), voice calls have noticeable latency, premium uses a token system on top of subscription.

Price: Free tier exists, $12.99/mo, drops to $3.99/mo on annual. The annual is genuinely good value.

Verdict: 9/10. The default pick.

2. Ourdream AI - Slightly better images, no Live Action

Direct competitor to Candy. Image quality is arguably even better in pure photorealism, fewer caps on uncensored output, and the response speed is excellent. Doesn't have Live Action video which is the only reason I rank it second.

Pros: Best raw image generation imo, generous credits, no annoying token system on top.

Cons: No video, voice features less developed, smaller character library.

Price: ~$9.99/mo entry.

Verdict: 9/10. Use this if you don't care about video.

3. FantasyGF - The customization king

Builder is even deeper than Candy AI. You can spend an hour just tweaking your character before sending the first message. Phone call feature works surprisingly well, and 4K image upgrades on the higher tiers are genuinely sharper.

Pros: Deepest character builder, real phone calls, strong NSFW.

Cons: Personality drifts after a few weeks if you don't actively reinforce it, UI feels a bit cluttered.

Price: ~$5.99/mo entry.

Verdict: 8.5/10. Best if you want a hyper-specific custom companion.

4. Kupid AI - Best dialogue quality, hands down

Most platforms are weirdly bad at intimate dialogue. They sound like a script written by someone who has only read about humans. Kupid is the exception. The conversation feels reactive, specific, and natural. Not the prettiest interface, image gen is mid, but the actual chat is great.

Pros: Best NSFW dialogue I've tested. Period.

Cons: Image quality is nothing special, no voice calls, fewer characters than competitors.

Price: Mid tier, around $10/mo.

Verdict: 8.5/10. Get this if dialogue is what you actually care about.

5. HeraHaven - Best memory and slow-burn experience

Different vibe from the others. HeraHaven is built for the long game. The memory system actually remembers context from weeks ago, and the characters develop personalities over time based on how you interact. Less about quick hits, more about building something that lasts.

Pros: Memory is genuinely impressive, characters evolve, narrative slow-burn works.

Cons: Slower to "get good" - takes a few sessions before the system really kicks in.

Price: Mid tier, ~$10/mo.

Verdict: 8/10. Best if you're patient and want depth.

6. DreamGF - The all-rounder budget pick

Massive character library (probably the biggest in this list), fast image generation, fully unlocked NSFW on premium. Less polished than Candy AI but cheaper and more expansive.

Pros: Huge library, fast, decent customization, friendly price.

Cons: Image quality varies between characters, conversation can feel formulaic.

Price: ~$5.99/mo entry.

Verdict: 7.5/10. Solid mid-budget pick.

7. Nectar AI - Smaller, cleaner, more focused

Doesn't try to do everything. The interface is clean, the chat is focused, and the entry price is friendly. If Candy AI feels overwhelming, Nectar is the calmer alternative.

Pros: Clean UX, good entry price, conversation quality is above average.

Cons: Smaller character pool, fewer multimedia features.

Price: $4.99/mo entry.

Verdict: 7.5/10. Underrated honestly.

8. Soulkyn - Heavy uncensored, 70B model

Built around a 70B model backbone (much bigger than what most platforms use). The output quality reflects that, especially for longer conversations and more elaborate scenarios. Has a weird "character breeding" feature where you can combine traits, which is either genius or extremely cursed depending on how you feel about it.

Pros: Big model = better long-context responses, fully uncensored.

Cons: Pricier, image gen is decent but not best-in-class, UI is functional but ugly.

Price: ~$11.99/mo entry.

Verdict: 7/10. Power-user pick.

9. Kindroid - Personality-first

Different angle from the rest. Kindroid focuses on personality construction rather than visual generation. The Cascaded Memory system is the standout, layering different types of memory so your companion actually feels coherent over time. Visuals are afterthought-tier but the chat depth is real.

Pros: Best personality consistency, voice calls are actually good, memory works.

Cons: Image generation is meh, more text-focused than visual, mobile-only essentially.

Price: ~$11.67/mo on annual.

Verdict: 7/10. Best if you want a personality more than a body.

10. Replika - The OG, neutered

Has to be in this list because it's the platform that started everything. Strong for emotional support and long-term wellness use - the memory and personality consistency are genuinely impressive. But after the policy changes a few years back, the NSFW side is basically gutted on the standard tier. So it's now best as a pure companion app, not anything more.

Pros: Best emotional intelligence I've felt, strong long-term memory, polished apps.

Cons: NSFW is paywalled and hobbled compared to before, feels somewhat sanitized now.

Price: Free tier + $19.99/mo for Pro.

Verdict: 6.5/10. Use this if you want a wholesome companion, not a girlfriend.

TL;DR ranking

4 Kupid AI Best dialogue ~$10
5 HeraHaven Memory + slow-burn ~$10

Random observations from 2 months of testing

  • The "free trial" on most of these is basically useless. You need at least a week of paid use to really judge a platform.
  • Image consistency matters way more than image quality. A photorealistic image of a different person every time is worse than a slightly less detailed image of the same person.
  • Voice calls are still the weakest feature across the board. The latency kills the immersion. Voice messages are way better for now.
  • The platforms positioning themselves as "no filter" or "fully uncensored" are not necessarily better. Often they're just less polished.
  • Memory is the silent killer. Platforms with good memory feel like a relationship. Platforms with bad memory feel like talking to a goldfish.
  • Don't pay monthly. Almost all of these have annual deals that are 60-70% cheaper. If you're going to use it, commit.

If anyone has tested ones I missed (Nomi, JuicyChat, etc.) drop a comment with your take. I'm done for now, my Apple Pay receipts are starting to scare me.

Edit: Yeah I know there's been a few new ones launched recently, will probably do a part 2 in a few months once they've matured.
