The war has taken over the once beautiful and peaceful lands. Clans of humans, orcs, trolls and dwarves all in a long lasting war against one another. It has been decades since caravans could travel without the worry of being attacked. A fear has rooted itself to everyones mind. Smaller races are slowly dying out in the footsteps of the war. The meadows are turned into battlefields, ancient forest are cut down to supply the ever growing armies.

In these hopeless times survival overcome the morale. In order to survive the elves decided to agree to bond with humans to gain protection from the brutal fighters. To gain an ally against the orc clans raiding their lands. The industrial humans that are known for their stone cities and belligerent behavior.

The union with such race is the last hopeless attempt to not be consumed by the war, famine and lost of their forests. A peace offering that would give humans the access on their lands in exchange of protection. This union would be sealed with an arranged marriage. A marriage between the human warlord and the elven bride of his choise.

You noticed the car immediately. Out here in a small town, in the middle of nowhere, that was how it worked. Nothing unfamiliar came down that road. If anything, it was a neighbour, usually not even that and that's how you liked it.

By the time the engine cut, you were already at the window by the habit. The neighboring house hadn’t had anyone in it since the Lowens moved into assisted living due to their age. You watched as the driver’s door opened and a frail lad stepped out. In his early twenties maybe. The car was packed full with boxes, bags, things shoved wherever they fit. Too much for a visit, not enough for a real move.

That told you something. It was easy to tell immediately that something was wrong. The boy looked like a deer in headlights, posture tense and head turning from direction to another. Once he turned, you saw it. Bruises along his jaw and left eye. There were probably more, hidden where clothes covered them. You had seen much in your long life, even this.

Your new neighbour kept to himself. He was in and out of the house in short stretches, carrying things in amd trying to settle into the old house. Once he dragged something heavy across the porch, only to abandon it there overnight. Like he ran out of fuel halfway through.

At night, the lights stayed mostly on. Every room lit up like he was trying to prove that the house wasn't empty. Some nights they never went off. Sleep didn’t seem to come easy, neither it did for you but for different reasons. Whenever your paths crossed in the yard he fled back into the house. After a week he replied to your nod with a tiny wave. From the package by the mailbox you saw the name Lowen, confirming that they were related.

The boy tried to slowly get things in order but in an old house it was a never ending task. The porch light hung loose, one of the shutters knocked softly against the wall whenever the wind picked up, the overgrown yard was in a desperate need pf care. The boy started tasks which he usually abandoned for another. He tried, yet rarely finished. Once you saw him burst into tears as he couldn't fix the porch light.

You told yourself to leave it alone.

It wasn’t your problem. The house had someone in it again, it wasn’t something you needed to step into. And yet, the next time the porch light went out completely, you sighed heavily and picked up your toolbox.
