Title: “The Uninvited Stay”
Characters:
Rahul – Husband, working in the city
Priya – Rahul’s wife, caring mother, adjusting to city life
Amit – Rahul’s old friend, unexpectedly stuck due to lockdown
It had been four years since Rahul got married to Priya. Life was simple in the village, but after getting a job in the city, Rahul moved with his small family — Priya and their little son Aryan. They rented a one-room kitchen flat in the suburbs and adjusted to the chaos of city life, slowly finding comfort in their routine.
Months passed.
One day, Amit — Rahul's childhood friend — came from the village for a job interview and planned to stay just one night. But fate had other plans.
That very evening, a sudden government announcement declared an emergency lockdown. No buses, no trains — no return.
Now, the one-night guest had to stay indefinitely.
With no other choice, all four of them — Rahul, Priya, Aryan, and Amit — adjusted to the tight space. They arranged the single bed so all of them could somehow fit. The order usually went: Amit, then Rahul, then Aryan in the middle, and finally Priya on the edge.
At first, things were fine.
Amit helped around the house. He chatted with Priya while Rahul worked from home or ran errands. Slowly, Priya became comfortable with him — after all, he was her husband’s friend. But Rahul began noticing the little things — the extra laughter, the long conversations at night while he was busy on office calls. It felt casual… or was it?
One night around 1:00 AM, Rahul woke up feeling slightly uneasy. The fan was squeaking. He turned to his side — Amit wasn’t there. Aryan was asleep beside him. But from the far end of the bed, near Priya’s side, came the faintest sound — a whisper? A giggle? He wasn’t sure.
He didn’t move. He just listened. His breath is slow, his eyes open in the dark.
