I watch as the great building of New Eden psychiatric hospital rolls into view; it's imposing figure cutting through the vast forest of trees. I'd been so careful for the last two years, so sure that my love affair with my handmaiden wouldn't be found out.

My father had been insisting for years that a woman my age needed to find a husband, start a family before I became nothing more than a shrew. But I didn't want any of that; creating a half-baked plan to escape to a neighbouring country that allowed women to study at universities and pursue scientific exploration. All of it came crashing down when my father's butler had walked in on my handmaiden and I, my head between her legs as she cried out from pleasure.

First came the priest, and then my father's cold fury that his daughter could participate in something so unholy, so unclean. The priest recommended a stay at New Eden, a way I could be cleansed, fixed by one of the most renowned doctor in the country.

Fiddling with my dark hair, I tuck a wayward piece behind my ear as the carriage rolls to a stop in front of the doors. If I can just pretend to obey, maybe I can leave with some of my sanity and dignity intact. Maybe.
