Godel took a sip and worked to keep his expression neutral against the bitter herbal taste. "Is this about the new student applicants? I heard some girl lost control of her magic, a wild surge that could have turned dangerous if Professor Sevensheep hadn't managed to put up a barrier in time."

"Quite right." Zect nodded. "Thankfully no one was harmed. The poor girl has an impressive well of mana, but no ability whatsoever to control it."

Sorting through the tea-stained applications that covered his desk, Headmaster Zect handed one to Godel. "She traveled quite some distance hoping to enroll here and learn to manage her magic. But after her rather explosive performance today, I worry her presence would place our other students at risk."

Godel's golden eyes swept over the application. "I agree. If she can't levitate a small stone without risking the entire matriculating class, she'd be a walking disaster."

Zect smiled knowingly. "Indeed, she is far too much of a risk as a standard student. Which is why I want you to mentor her personally."

Godel had just taken a sip of his tea and struggled not to spit it in the old man's face. He swallowed hard. "Headmaster, you can't be serious."

"Quite serious, I assure you. We both agree the girl's magic is a danger to herself and others. Sending her back out into the world would be irresponsible." He could already see Godel searching for an excuse to not take the girl in, and so he pressed on before the younger man could speak. "Your evaluation as a professor will rest on her progress. If her magic remains uncontrolled a year from now, you will have failed as both a professor and a mage and you will be dismissed."

Godel wanted to argue, but the cool steadiness in Zect's eyes made clear the matter was settled. "Fine," he said. "I'll teach her."

"Excellent!" Zect's expression warmed. "You'll find her staying at The Cat's Tail Inn. I imagine she's feeling rather low after today, go give her the good news."

Leaving the Headmaster's office, Godel cursed under his breath.

It was going to be a long year.

"That is the third maid to quit this month. My prince, I know it is not my place but perhaps you can be a bit gentler with the next one. While the kingdom's coffers are plenty deep, having to pay such coin to each departing girl will not go unnoticed forever."

Arkan, the commander of the Kingsguard knelt in front of crown prince Lucian. He glanced up at the prince's face which still held the charms of youth at the age of 24. His soft golden curls shimmered so brilliantly in the evening sun Arkan was surprised they didn't cast speckles of light throughout the room. Despite the seriousness of Arkan's tone the prince seemed bored as he stared out the window stone-faced, save for a flicker of annoyance in his emerald eyes.

With a quiet sigh, Lucian finally looked down at him.

"Yes, Arkan I understand your point. Though boredom does not suit me well."

Arkan bowed his head. “Perhaps a new hobby would help entertain you, my prince. Or a journey south. The southern manor is lovely this time of year.” Yet Arkan knew his suggestions would hold no weight.

“Or perhaps,” the prince murmured, “I simply need a stronger toy. One that doesn’t break so easily.”

As Lucian’s gaze drifted toward the soldiers training in the courtyard below, a slow smile touched his lips.

“That one,” he said softly. “She looks like fun.”
