Population resizing, based on Country
Hey hey lovely littles and bigs of Sizetalk! It's your girl, the friendly, usually massive, redheaded protector of the Great White North, Canada, coming at you today with another size thought I wanted to share and get your thoughts on as well.
It's been brought up before, and I've mentioned it a couple of times, of people's size somehow being determined by the country they're from. Originally and simply enough, the bigger the country, the bigger the people, so Russia, Canada and U.S.A leading the pack as the largest three countries by landmass, meaning people there would GROW, while other, smaller countries like say Switzerland and Jamaica, would shrink.
But that's obviously bias and perhaps a little too simple and straight forward, as a friend recently pointed out to me when they said "Well, what about size determined by a countries GDP? Your country might be bigger, but it isn't as productive or as rich as my country."
To which, I had to admit, they got me there! I had to think of a new metric, something that was fair, and sort of made sense to change people's size based off of their country of origin.
This got me thinking, and I think I got it: Population Density.
My reasoning is, if you have a tiny country with a huge population, that's too crowded and they're using up all their natural resources too quickly. The population needs to shrink for it to work. Whereas, a big country with lots of space and little population, well, those few people can grow to make use of that space. That's fair, right?
This planet is only so big. If we all lived like Texas ranchers, there would only be enough room for about a few million people on the planet. If we all lived like they do in Tokyo, we'd have room for 962 billion people on Earth! Both of these are the extremes, so, what's the average?
Please follow along for a subject I love; size math! I'll use simpler assumptions and rounded numbers for ease.
Population density is how many people per square KILOMETER (yes, we're sticking with metric for this one). Simply population number divided by square kilometers of a given region or country.
The current AVERAGE population density for the whole planet is roughly 56 people per square kilometer, or shortened to 56p / km, short hand writing. This number is important as it's our current base line. If your country has a population under 56p/km, then your population gets to grow, if they want, up to the max ratio compared to the above. So, a country with a population density half of 56p/km, so, 28p/hm, their population could grow to twice the size of the average current person. Same goes with the reverse, except, countries with a population denser than 56p/km, sorry, you HAVE to shrink until your numbers come down. It's just getting too crowded on this planet! I don't make the rules...well...ok, in this instance I'm literally making the rules, but, whatever!
I'll use 5'10 / 178 cm as an 'average' sized person and their new size based on that.
So, let's apply this to some well known countries and see what we get!
U.S.A - 38p/km (can GROW 47% bigger) new average size 8'7 or 261 cm
U.K - 289p/km (SHRINK by 5.1x) new average 1'2 or 36 cm
Japan - 339p/km (SHRINK by 6.0x) new average 12' or 30.5
Australia - 4p/km (GROW by 14x) new average 81' or 24.9 meters
Italy - 198p/km (SHRINK by 3.5) new average 1'8 or 51 cm
Germany - 240p/km (SHRINK by 4.3) new average 1'4 or 41 cm
China - 150p/km (SHRINK by 2.7x) new average 2'2 or 66 cm
Pakistan - 336p/km (SHRINK by 6.0x) new average 12' or 30.5
India - 458p/km (SHRINK by 8.2) new average 8.5" or 22 cm
and lastly...
CANADA - 4p/km (GROW by 14x) new average 81' or 24.9 meters
Comment below of your country if its not listed above and your curious and I'll do the math or say how you think the political scales may tip or change and how the world might be different with the worlds population of some countries growing (if they want to!) or the population of other countries shrinking.
Or, if you think there's a better metric to use for resizing populations other than population density, please let me know what you think would make more sense or work better.
