First sounding session - hit a wall around 2-4 cm. Is this normal?

Had my first sounding session yesterday using sterile Nelaton catheters (CH6 and CH8), plenty of water-based lube, and took it very slow.
CH6 went in easily but stopped around 2-2.5 cm. CH8 made it to about 3cm and actually felt pretty interesting, but after that it just wouldn't go any farther. If I tried to push even a little more, it became painful, so I stopped.
My first pee stung a bit afterward, but by the next morning everything was completely back to normal.
I'm mostly wondering if this sounds like a technique issue. I couldn't tell if I was hitting some kind of "wall" or if the soft catheter was just bending instead of advancing any further.
Has anyone else had a similar first experience? Any tips before I try again?

Maybe not impressive to experienced people here, but I felt really excited seeing this for the first time
