For years, ever since you were younger, your best friend’s parents had always seemed like the perfect couple. Her parents had never seemed to argue or scuffle, hell they were never even passive aggressive toward each other like most couples tend to be. Even the absolute worst nights which you or your friend had seen between them were some peoples greatest night with their significant other. After all your wondering and time spent viewing such a happy arrangement, you’d finally learn their secret.
Only a few short months after your twenty-first birthday, your friends dad would approach you in the form of a text message asking you to come visit. With how often he claimed to view you as a secondary daughter, this sort of request was never anything out of the ordinary, typically it was just his way of inviting you to join in on their family escapades like a night at the theater or a nice meal out. Tonight though, when you arrived at the house, he happily greeted you at the door with a warm hug and happy smile. Everything seemed to be the exact same as every other time. Or that was the case until he invited you up to his office for a chat.
Once in the small room on the second story, he’d lean himself against his desk and reveal to you he and his wives secret. They were swingers. The way they avoided fights? Going out to meet with one of their other lovers. The reason they were always so cheerful? They were always riding the high of knowing they’d just come back to their soulmate after fucking some stranger or a side-piece only a few hours ago. Hell, apparently when they’d gone out of town for vacation there was apparently a solid chance that they’d been just down the street at a weekend long orgy!
Why was he telling you all of this though? Well, it’s because he was hoping to potentially sleep with you. Knowing how this might come across as such a sudden proposition, he was more than happy to assure you that it was okay if you wished to tell him no. In fact, he urged you to take some time to think about it while also handing you a hotel room keycard. Not wanting you to answer yet, he’d give a very simple order: show up to that hotel tonight and go to room 406 if she wished to give him a chance. If she didn’t show though, he’d accept her rejection and take no offense at all.
What will you do?
Wrapping my hands around my chest, a shiver would be shot down my spine as a cool wind washed its way through the forest. A soft whistle ringing as it passed by the leaves, not that I could hear it over the sound of my chattering teeth. Looking up to the sky through breaks in the branches, the clouds would be looming with a dreary grey hue, a far cry from the clear blue sky I’d been greeted with only but an hour ago when I’d began my trek.
“Goddamnit…” I’d mutter to myself as another series of winds blew past, freezing me down to my core. Pulling my phone out of my jeans front left pocket, I’d use the little bit of cell service still available to me to access my weather app. Waiting and staring as the screen took its time to load, my eyes would go wide when the display finally showed off the forecast alongside a severe weather alert reading: “\*\*WARNING: Severe Snowstorm affecting the following areas… danger to life… remain indoors unless absolutely necessary.\*\*”
Beginning to feel panic set in as I read through that, my heart would race and my pupils dilate. As my anxiety allows itself to run wild, another series of winds blowing past managed to be enough to sober me up. Maybe I could make it back to my car before it started falling! Maybe if I run I can beat the storm! Maybe-
Within an instant the rationale and optimism I’d had would be immediately stripped from me as I watched a series of snowflakes make their way past my face and down on to my teeshirt.
Turning on my heels, I’d force my phone back into my pocket while my feet began to move as fast as they could in order to try and retrace my steps along the overgrown path. Run and run as fast I could though, the cool air would be sapping my energy and burning my lungs. Trying to ignore it and push through the pain, I’d continue to push myself and weave through the trees or thicker areas of brush while hoping that my memory was serving me right while more and more of those small white specks fells down.
Eventually though, despite my best efforts, I’d have no choice but to huddle myself down beside an evergreen to catch my breath while praying the trees needles would be enough to help keep the snow away. With how heavily it was coming down though it’d take nothing short of a shelter to keep the frost at bay. A fact which stood true as every inch of his clothes and fur were either matted down in water or starting to frost over despite the fact that this freak snowfall began only a matter of minutes ago.
With a situation like this though, I knew staying still meant death. At least if I kept moving and trying to make it back to my car, I could potentially use the heater to stave off frostbite.
Picking myself up from the trees base, I’d continue my march.
Taking one step after another, my feet would feel as if they’d had cinder blocks tied to them and my chest a raging inferno. Surely all was seeming hopeless until I managed to spot hope.
Like a lone lighthouse lighting a rocky shore in the midst of a monsoon, a cabin in a clearing lit up and a billowing stack of smoke rising from the chimney!
Summoning what little I had left, I forced out one final push to make it there. Pumping my legs as hard as I could though, I’d still find myself falling short. Quite literally in fact as my legs would come out from beneath me and I’d land atop the soft cushion of the fresh powder. Refusing to accept this sort of defeat, I’d crawl the remaining fifteen feet or so and only once I made it to the door did I begin to call through my chapped lips and dried throat for help while banging my near frozen hand against the cabin door.
