During the Bosnian War (1992–1995), in the Balkans in Southeast Europe, Serbian paramilitary units used circumcision as a physical marker to identify Muslim Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims). Captive men were forced to remove their underwear. Circumcision served as the basis for targeted abuse, torture, or executions in the context of ethnic cleansing.

Circumcision (known as *Sunet* in Bosnian) is deeply rooted throughout the entire Muslim population in the Balkans and is regarded as an indispensable initiation ritual.

At checkpoints or in prison camps, men were deliberately stripped naked by Serbian militias in order to distinguish Muslims from Orthodox Serbs or Catholic Croats based on the absence of a foreskin.
