Archiving and Compressing! So Archiving and Compressing are usually conflated with each other due to the ZIP file format being the most commonly known method to distribute stuff without breaking the storage budget. Now here's a question:

What exactly happens with files in a ZIP file?

1. ZIP files are a compressed archive file
2. ZIP files are an archive of compressed files

If you picked >!option 2!<, you're correct! Now to explain a bit. Compressing is to make a big thing smaller. But Archiving is listing all the different things like file name, permissions, and other things an operating system might need.

Linux does not use ZIP files traditionally. Instead, it uses tar (__T__ape __Ar__chive) to archive the files they want, then uses a compression program to make it smol. The usual suspects for compression from "worst" to "best" are gzip, bzip2, and xz with zstd as a loved newcomer. I use quotes because each compression scheme has tradeoffs as far as compatibility, what compression schemes are good at, and even how fast it decompresses things.

Now because tar files (or tarballs) turns a bunch of files into a singular one, the compression programs can use everything that is related between the files instead of just one file at at time. In this case, compressed tar files (or tarballs) can get much better compression than a ZIP file as the ZIP file compresses each file individually. But the problem with tar files is that you have to extract the entire tar file; you cannot pull a single file in the middle like you can with ZIP files.

Again, it's a game of tradeoffs.

Now this is where I play the whole "compatibility between Windows, MacOS, and Linux" thing, but all three nowadays support compressed tarballs and ZIP files. So I could send you girlies a compressed tarball and you all would be able to open it!
