Gemma by Mike Dowson
Mike Dowson is a British photographer born and raised in Manchester. He left home at 16 and moved to Paris, where he began taking candid snapshots and developed his approach to photography without formal training.
His philosophy centres on the idea that “a snap shot is the truest form of photography.” He favoured a direct, unstyled approach with minimal production, placing the model and the spontaneous moment at the centre of the image.
These poolside images (featuring the green-framed sunglasses, retro telephone, and similar props) are typical of his personal and editorial work from the 2000s–mid-2010s. They circulate under his name on photography archives, Tumblr, VK, and portfolio sites, and align with the aesthetic of the images collected in his 2015 book Naked Fashion Girls.

Soviet Erotic Alphabet by Sergey Merkurov (1931)
Sergey Merkurov (1881–1952) was one of the most celebrated Soviet artists of his time: a master monumental sculptor who created some of the largest Stalin statues in the USSR, countless Lenin monuments, and hundreds of official portraits. He was also the USSR’s greatest maker of death masks (including Lenin’s) and later became director of the Pushkin Museum.
Yet in 1931, during the more experimental early Soviet years, he produced something completely wild.
