I grew up with my controlling parents, my stern black father was absolute, while my strict Korean mother had a sort fuse. Due to my father’s ego and distain from being questioned, I’d get punished anytime I tried. While with my mother, if I didn’t do what she wanted as soon as she wanted I’d get punished. After years of growing up in these conditions, along with schools beating these morals into me. I find myself adhering to whatever a person with any sort of authority has to say.
Then came all the rules I had to follow. Whether it was a rule because my parents said they were, a rule because that’s just how things are, or a rule of a place we were at. Traditions and rules are meant to be followed, not broke. They were in place for a reason.
That was all well and good when people had my best interests at heart. However, there are several people who go on power trips the second they have a modicum of power. Lording it over anyone else, just because outside of that position they have nothing. Today, I’m less compliant as I was. After all living alone does that to a person. I still sometimes find myself mindlessly following orders by anyone who sounds like they know what they’re talking about, following pointless rules without question, and perpetuating traditions I don’t understand.
