This is going to be very different from my other posts lmao. I just thought some of you would like to know another person’s thoughts on this. I need to start this post by saying: I am a sex/romance repulsed AroAce. I do not experience ANY kind of sexual or romantic attraction, so I cannot relate to any of these kinks, this is from a very unbiased perspective. I do have, however, what I would call a special interest, in kinks and the kink/bdsm community (I’ve been researching/learning/fascinated with kinks for over 10 fucking years now lmao). 

THERE WILL BE NO KINK SHAMING IN THIS POST 
If I see anything that looks like kink shaming in the comments, I will shame you out of existence. Do NOT kink shame in my comments. Be nice, be understanding. If I can be understanding, then so can you. 

Now then, I’m going to go ahead and preface this by saying I’m mainly going to be talking about kinks here, not fetishes. Both are very complex topics, however, fetishes tend to be much more specific than kinks, and none of us have time for that (this is going to be a long post anyway, I clearly cannot shut the fuck up). There is a lot of nuance to kinks and the BDSM community, no two people experience kinks in the same way, I think that is an important thing to understand. If you need anything explained, please ask in the comments below, I can’t explain everything here, nobody has that kind of time. I will explain a very very important concept down below; however, the reason I’m adding this is because I think it is one of the most important things to understand (and one of the most misunderstood concepts) about the kink community. 

Throughout this post, I will be using the term CNC. **CNC** stands for **Consensual Non Consent**. Consent is the MOST IMPORTANT aspect of, well life in general, but especially for the kink/BDSM community. Consent is a REQUIREMENT. Period. The important thing that a lot of people miss when discussing CNC is the Consensual at the start. CNC is always consensual and the act or scene can be stopped at any time with the use of a safe word. I cannot stress this enough, TRUST is so important for any kind of relationship, so if you don’t trust someone, please please don’t fuck them. Alright I’ll stop with the life lessons now. Anyway, I bring up CNC because pretty much every character in the game I believe would engage with CNC and I desperately need everyone to understand that as they read this post. Everything I write here is consensual, I will not engage in any content that romanticizes any form of non-consensual contact. And I hope that is all I need to say on the subject.

Alright, the long awaited post! It’s time for Jester’s play!!! Now, before the Jester fans come to get me, yes, I do think he’s a big fat fucking liar. You will NOT change my mind. I didn’t say that was a bad thing. Have I been out here hating him? Maybe a little bit, but that’s not because he’s a liar, it's because he’s a bad liar and thinks he got away with lying, he didn’t. That’s why I’m mad. Had it been a good lie that I had to work to notice, that would be different. But no, he just lied to ALL of our fucking faces, and then had the audacity to lecture US on mouths lying not eyes. You know whose mouth lies? HIS. Lying is not my issue. I actually think he’s lying to protect the rest of the circus, and I do think that’s very noble, I just really thought he’d be better at it lmao. 

TO UNDERSTAND THIS POST, you really need to at least know what my theory is in my previous posts. I would highly suggest you read them to understand more (A google doc will also be attached with everything thus far), but, I will summarize it for you. This is not an in depth summary, because I’ve done a LOT of research, I cannot fit it in a reasonable space here lmao. My perspective is LARGELY based on Columbina’s story, so if you don’t use her story as the basis of your interpretation for this game, WE WILL GET TO DIFFERENT CONCLUSIONS!! Please keep that in mind if your theories do not align with mine (which is completely fine, I just think knowing who you’re listening to helps you understand the story more)   

The theory goes like this. I believe Columbina asked Harlequin to kill her so she wouldn’t have to deal with what the humans were doing to her. I believe she asked this without the others knowledge and didn’t want the others to know, so Harlequin acted as if he killed her because she was the weakest and they needed to save themselves by eating her (which also isn’t untrue). But *I* believe the real reason Harlequin killed Columbina was because she asked him to do it. You are free to disagree with me, but please please please read my thoughts before you disagree, I’ve found some pretty good evidence to back my thoughts up (otherwise I wouldn’t be so confident posting it to reddit lmao) 

I am open to any criticism on my theories (any of them) and would love to know your thoughts, comments, and questions down below. With that being said, I am a very interactive poster and there is a 99% chance I will answer your comment, so I promise to be respectful if you do <3!

Ok, for those of you who saw my post a few days ago, thank you so much for the engagement. As I said, I was working on a cleaned up google doc for anyone who didn’t want to read my handwriting lmao. So, I want to preface this by saying: THIS IS A THEORY. I used the information in the game along with some of the answers from the AMA’s to piece this theory together. IT IS STILL INCOMPLETE. There are still things we (I) don’t know. Also, I didn’t include the Jester’s play in this because I’m going to (very very soon… I promise) make a whole separate post for that because I have very specific feelings on that character. Feel free to share any comments, criticisms, or interesting theories of your own down in the comments. 

To preface what this is before you jump in blind, I believe that Columbina asked Harlequin to kill her. I am not trying to absolve Harlequin of his actions, I am just trying to share what *I* picked up on from the pieces of information we’ve been given.  I think she did it because she knew the others needed a way out, and I believe she did it because she would rather die than deal with what the humans were doing to her. OBVIOUSLY I can’t actually say how she was feeling, however, I do feel like I have some pretty strong evidence for my case and would really appreciate it if you read at least some of it before criticizing it lol. I am MORE THAN OPEN to criticism, as long as you’re respectful and I can tell you actually looked at what I had to say first! I’m a pretty out of the box thinker, so we may not agree and for all I know, I could be really really wrong (which would be a little embarrassing I’m not going to lie lmao). But again, this is a theory, I’m not claiming it’s true, it’s just what *I* happen to believe from what we’ve been given. 

I’ve once again added an image for clickability, but I do think it’s just a little important to my theory. If he did this as an act of survival and felt no remorse for it as some people claim, why would he cry? (This is from Columbina’s story NOT Harlequins). The main perspective of this post is trusting Columbina’s mirror scene the MOST. If you believe the other tellings, you are clearly going to come to a different conclusion. I’ve chosen to trust the mirror the most (and the name Easter-egg) (maybe a mistake, we’ll see) so this is how I mainly came to my conclusion. If you go more by the others’ stories, you will likely get a different answer than me, and that’s ok! I would love to hear what you have to say down below if you do follow another perspective!

The long awaited post!! This has been a very long time coming and I feel like I’ve hyped it up enough that you’ll start getting impatient if I don’t upload it lmao.

Here’s the deal, this goes into explicit detail about what I think actually happened to Columbina with what we’ve been told so far. Now, this covers Harlequin’s puppets, some of Pierrot’s comments, Columbina’s mirror, and the easter-egg that pops up when you type her name. This does NOT include the Jester’s play! That will be an entirely separate post because A. I think he’s a big fat fucking lair and I want to look at that as it’s own thing and B. I don’t think his story has very much to do with what actually happened, so I’m not including it here. You’ll have to be a little patient for that one. 

These are my own handwritten notes! It is color-coded with the key attached. I am so sorry for how sporadic it is, these are my literal thoughts as they appear in my head, so it makes sense to me and I tried to keep it fairly organized. Let me add this quickly since I forgot lmao: I believe that Columbina asked Harlequin to kill her. I think she did it because she knew no one else would be able to ‘save’ her the way she needed to be saved. I figured that might be some important context before you read all of this lmao!

I made this as a comment but I thought some of you might want to read about this so I’m going to make a post about it! 

Ok so some of you may know the famous love triangle of the Columbina, the Harlequin and the Pierrot, which is a main driving point in the Freak Circus. Technically the famous story of the love ‘triangle’ or more so the pining Pierrot comes from the Harlequinades of England not so much from the Commedia Dell’Arte though that IS where the archetypes originate from. Technically all of their characters have been changed from the original Italian archetypes:

Pierrot: the original Pierrot, who actually likely came from the trope of the Pedrolino (though this is unproven) The trope of the Pierrot did not exist until the Commedia dell’arte traveled to France, becoming the Comédie-Italienne, where he was named, however he still was not the same character that we think of now. Originally, he was a bumbling idiot who did have a crush on Columbina occasionally but it was not a driving point of his character, he fell in the class of the Zanni (or clowns) and often dispensed advice to Columbia only to be laughed at in response. Once the Comédie-Italienne (The french telling of the Commedia dell’arte) traveled to England in the 18th(ish) century we then start to see the Character that we often think of when discussing Pierrot (especially his character within this game). In the English Harlequinades we start to see the pining love-sick Pierrot that we often think of, however, in this version, Harlequin almost always wins Columbina’s affection rather than the Pierrot. 

Harlequin: Also known as Arlecchino in the Commedia dell’arte (also falling into the class of the Zanni and the most famous of the tropes) originally acted as more of a “Court-jester-esque” character that could openly criticize the Pantalone (or the ‘master’ falling into the highest class of the Vecchi) as long as he was doing so in a humorous way, but similar to what we think of now, he was a very mischievous and cunning character who was constantly up to no good, often thwarting the Pantalone’s plans. He often attempted to pursue Columbina, though he would attempt to woo almost any female character that was on stage through deception, humor, or by ridiculing his romantic rivals (sound familiar?).  However, the most relevant version of him actually comes from the later Harlequinades; he actually becomes the romantic hero that wins the Columbia’s affection against the Pierrot.

Columbina (my personal favorite): she is by far the most changed character from what we can see; originally in the Commedia dell’arte, she was the smartest character on stage when she was present, she was in the class of the servants (also falling into the class of the Zanni), and she was the mastermind responsible for getting the lovers (or the Innamorati) together, making her a major driving point of the plot. She was also the most attractive character on stage, often renowned for her beauty and was one of the only other characters (besides the Pierrot later on, who didn’t wear a mask on stage.) She sometimes had a romance with Harlequin but it wasn’t a major factor, and like the Harlequin, she was smart, cunning and often mischievous, and a very down to earth character who saw situations for what they were; in the later Harlequinades she was reduced to the main love interest and became the Pantalone’s daughter (putting her in the class of the Vecchi rather than the Zanni), the only point of her character was to be fought over by the Harlequin and the Pierrot as the Pantalone tried to get her back as she often ran off with the Harlequin. She was no longer the smart, cunning, mischievous character that she once was, which seems much more in line with the Freak Circus version of her (much to my dismay). 

For the reasons above I think specifically these three are more so based on the Harlequinades of England than the Italian Commedia dell’arte where the tropes originated (save the Pierrot but we’ve already discussed him). 

There is a doctor in the Commedia dell’arte however he is highly UNeducated yet pretends as if he were the smartest character (he isn’t) this doesn’t seem very in line with the Doctor in the game.

The trope of the Jester is an odd one because it was an actual thing in real life but wasn’t popular in the media until after the Commedia dell’arte. I think what we see now is a mix of the court jester trope and the Italian Commedia dell’arte version of the Harlequin. But this is a very common character to see in the media, so there really isn’t much to say about his character. 

As for the ticket taker, I’m not really sure where he came from lmao. I’ve tried, but I really have no clue, if anyone has any idea where the trope may have come from, I would love to hear it in the comments below. 

Sorry for the long post, I just have put so much research into this (I might be a *little* obsessed) and I thought some of you might like to see it since you’ve seemed to enjoy my other posts! I will be posting about what I think ACTUALLY happened to Columbina (since she’s my favorite), I may do that post in 2 parts since and put the Jester’s play in a second part since he’s a big fucking liar… anyway, please leave your thoughts and comments in the comments below, I would love to know what you think. P.S. I’ll of course include a picture because I know what you freaks are here for!

I’m going to add a small note here since there has been a little bit of confusion… I am NOT looking at this within the cannon of the game. I am looking at this from the perspective of why Neko chose to create his game and characters this way! I am a person that believes every detail an author includes is included for a reason and I think names are one of the MOST important insights to a character. I have no intention of boiling these characters down into only these tropes. They are much much more complex than these simple tropes, the same way these tropes were only meant to be kept in mind as the performers improved their entire show. They are just archetypes and I would like to make it PERFECTLY clear that Neko did such an amazing job writing these characters so that they could never be boiled down into something so simple and superficial. This isn’t looking at why they are called by these names within the universe, I want to know why Neko chose these names to go with these characters and what his choices can tell us about said characters!!

Okay, hear me out on this one. Also, the comics that Neko released is VERY important context for this post, so it will be linked below if you haven’t read them, I’ll be linking the masterlist of all three, I would read them all but the really important one is the old (original) outfits. 

I think Harlequin is trying to steal M/C from Pierrot for Pierrot’s sake. Think about it from Harlequin’s perspective (a horrifying request, I know) but imagine the first friend you ever made, and have stuck with (even after killing his love interest (which I think she was asking Harlequin for but that’s a different post for a different time)), even through being enslaved by humans, which you ALL hate, including Pierrot. In fact, if you look at the comic, Pierrot is so wounded by human interactions in the past that he literally killed a WHOLE TENT full of them because they laughed at him (valid). So, we can prove that Pierrot is by far the most volatile member of the circus, that’s been proven time and time again, so you’re Harlequin and see that same person who crashed out because he was laughed at, change HIS ENTIRE VIEW ON HUMANITY for one person. One fucking person you guys. That’s what’s keeping Pierrot hinged right now. If I was Harlequin, I’d be freaking the fuck out too, cause I certainly wouldn’t trust M/C to live up to the expectation Pierrot has set for them, how could they?!? 

So what does he do? He tries to make it his fault. If he steals M/C from Pierrot, then it wasn’t M/c that betrayed Pierrot, but it was once again Harlequin. If Harlequin can steal M/C suddenly, all of humanity’s kindness doesn’t rest on one person. Suddenly it’s not a betrayal of humanity, but it’s a betrayal on Harlequin’s part. I truly think he is trying to prevent Pierrot from losing whatever faith he has found in humanity through M/C. Harlequin doesn’t hold that faith, so he is already expecting a betrayal, but if he gets there before anything else happens, suddenly it’s Harlequin’s fault NOT M/C’s. Could it turn into something more in the future, yeah, there’s going to be a Harlequin route, of course it’s going to change, but (and this is just a theory) I really think what started this game of ‘cat and mouse’ is Harlequin trying to protect Pierrot once again from human depravity.

I certainly would NOT. I am completely sure of this for a couple of reasons; 

1. I’m a bitch. Would I have helped Pierrot? Yes! Would he learn a lesson about human compassion and kindness from me? No! I might would help Pierrot if for no other reason than to yell at that guy, he seems very annoying. Also, I promise you that if someone offered me a pink ticket (maybe not everyone could figure that out, but I promise you I would. I’m not saying I’m a genius, but the fact that the street fools that barely talk are the ones dressed in pink? No way.) but I promise if he offered me a pink ticket, I would genuinely laugh. Also, I have severe social anxiety, I wouldn’t go anyway. 
2. I’m nosy. More so, I’m observant. I notice things, I notice a lot of things, especially something like my BALCONY DOOR BEING OPENED. I would have left that room. I would have gone back to the coffee shop if I really had no other choice. What do you mean M/C just laid down and went to bed? Also, I like finding questions that absolutely do NOT need answered. If I made it to the Ticket Takers tent (I wouldn’t, I would already be dead), I would never let Columbina’s mirror story go. I would ask so many questions that would get me in so much trouble.

  

Also, I am a very down to earth person, I’m very good at reading situations and seeing them as they are, I’m not very influenced by… well anything. I’m not really in touch with my emotions the same way other people are, so I can read not only situations very well, but I’m also incredible at reading people and figuring out what they want and how they are trying to get it. I’m not the kind of person who is easily manipulated or used, I promise, people have tried. This isn’t me being like, I’m just so good at reading people and knowing what’s right and what’s wrong, this is me admitting that I don’t comprehend my emotions enough, or maybe even have them, to be manipulated. So realistically, while I would be drawn to Harlequin and Jester because I would want to figure them out (I’m sex/ romance repulsed aroace btw, so that wouldn’t work either) they would both HATE ME, with a burning passion.

To prove my point, I think it’s fair to share that I have multiple pages of a notebook full of Columbina’s story. Also, it’s colorcoded. That’s how invested I am in this story, I still haven’t gone through all of it yet. 

3. I am not afraid to speak my mind. You know how Harlequin and Pierrot warn M/C about not ‘letting their eyes give them away’ yeah they wouldn’t have to worry about my eyes. There is nothing that could keep me from getting answers to my questions. The fact that the Jester’s play is so so very different from every other telling, if you really think I wouldn’t ask about that, you would be wrong. Not only would I ask questions, they would be framed in a very impolite manner. Also, remember how I said I would laugh if I were simply offered a pink ticket, I promise you if I found Carol and realized they tried to kidnap 2 people that WORK AT THE SAME PLACE AT THE SAME TIME?!? I would be getting onto him like I was the one who told him to do it! Also, the fact that Pierrot killed that rude woman whose last known location was at the SAME COFFEE SHOP and also BEING RUDE TO ME? They’re going to get caught. Worse, they’re going to get ME caught, and I didn’t do anything! Also, Harlequin’s green tongue and his tentacles along with Pierrot’s horns? I’m supposed to NOT say anything about that? What’s worse, I would have figured out they were monsters long before that, LOOK AT THEM!! Harlequin’s puppet story was so thinly veiled, he might as well have just told the truth. Also, I’m not eating the drugged cake, when did he even make that?!?

 

I could go on for much much much longer about the reasons I would not survive, however, I’ll change it up and say that the only way I could possibly survive is being interesting enough for the Jester to be entertained enough to let me live… which I might could do, if I made it that far. So I really want to know, do you think you would be able to survive? Do you think you could brute force it or are you as naive as the M/C and would be able to survive that way, or maybe something else entirely?  Please know that this post was not me bragging, I am just a very very self-aware person. 

Also, if anyone wants to know what would really be the cause of my death, let me find out about Harlequin’s original outfit. I genuinely cannot look at it without breaking down into tears. I promise, if I found out about it, I would be dead in the next 5 seconds, otherwise I would NEVER let him live it down, I did mention I was a bitch after all.
