My character: Andrew, 21, lacrosse captain. He works out late on purpose. Avoids the afternoon rush when half the football team is in there performing for each other, avoids the awkward small talk, avoids having to be "on" when all he wants to do is put in work and decompress. The late shift is his, headphones in, nobody watching, no random chicks coming up flirting. It's the one hour of the day where he's just a guy lifting weights. Or it usually is. Tonight someone else had the same idea.

Your character: Another varsity athlete, the sport is yours to choose, football, wrestling, hockey, baseball, whatever fits. Someone who belongs in that facility, who clearly puts in the work, and who isn't thrown off by finding a stranger there at 10 PM because he keeps odd hours too. Maybe he nods and they coexist in silence for a while before something breaks it. Maybe he's the type who talks between sets whether you want him to or not. Either way, Andrew notices him in a way that's hard to shake, and by the time they're done for the night neither of them is quite ready to leave.

What I love about this setup is the clean slate of it. No shared teammates to complicate things, no overlapping social circles, no history. Just two athletes who found each other in the in-between hours when the rest of campus is asleep. There's a lot of room here for push and pull, two competitive people sizing each other up, figuring out what the other is made of, and finding out it's more than they bargained for.
