The Last Set

It’s past 10pm and the gym is nearly empty — just the hum of fluorescent lights and the distant sound of a weight rack.

I’ve been noticing you for the last forty minutes. Same routine, same quiet focus, never quite making eye contact but always somehow aware of where I am in the room.
You really are starting to be quite the distraction.

We finish at the same time. Of course we do.

The locker room is deserted. Steam drifts from under the sauna door. I towel off slowly, hyper-aware of every sound — his locker opening, the soft thud of your gym bag hitting the bench, the pause before you say anything at all.

“Sauna’s free, if you want it.”

I’m alone at lunch— or at least I was — until my phone lights up.

I shouldn’t accept it.

I do anyway.

The image loads slowly, like it knows it has me. It’s dim, warm-toned… a close-up of someone’s hand resting on a thigh. Not revealing everything — just enough. Skin, fabric, a hint of movement.

My heart rate rises.

I look up, scanning the room.

Everyone suddenly feels like a possibility.

I swallow, then bite my lip, already scrolling my camera roll. I shouldn’t play along… but my fingers are moving before I can talk myself out of it.

I find a quick photo — subtle. Nothing explicit….yet

But it’s Intentional. It should tease.

I AirDrop it.

Seconds stretch and feel much longer.

Then—

“2 photos from ‘Unknown’.”

I accept immediately this time.

Closer now. Bolder. A reflection in a dark screen — just enough to suggest they’re watching me too. A second shot… lower. A challenge.

They know exactly what they’re doing.

And worse—

So do I.

The next photo from my camera role is bolder. It’s exciting. I can’t stop.

This isn’t random anymore.

This is a game.

A conversation without words.

And every new image feels like a step closer to something neither of us has said out loud yet.

I glance around again, heart beating just a little faster.

Trying to catch their eye.

Trying not to.

Because the real question isn’t just who they are anymore…

It’s what happens when one of us finally decides to stop hiding.
