New German Torpedo Bomber
Looks like the new SSR German aircraft is a torpedo bomber! Not a lot of info that I found, but supposedly this variant of the FW-190 was a prototype designed with 2 smaller and 1 larger torpedo racks. The intent appears to have been to be able to launch either the 2 lesser torpedos (880 lb/ 400 kg each) OR just 1 big torpedo (1543 lb/ 700 kg). Considering the art done for this aircraft, it would seem that the 2 lesser torpedos were selected for in game use. However, the JU 87 D-4 we currently have was only designed to carry 1 torpedo per payload (max 1995 lbs / 905 kg). In game it launches 3 torpedos per plane. With that in mind we may see this new torpedo bomber dropping far more than the depicted 2 torpedos in one run. This plane also had a pair of machine guns, but since it’s just the 2 I doubt we are looking at a new wyvern/bréguet.
Interestingly, this aircraft is also noted for having specialized bombing sights for improved accuracy. It might then be reasonable to assume we are looking at converging torpedos for this aircraft or maybe some form of skill which makes the torpedos more accurate. Tragically there appears to have never been an intent for carrier based use, as it is a land based low altitude design.
Frankly I’m just excited the JU 87 D-4 has some competition at long last for the Iron Blood SSR torpedo bomber slot. It’s a very good gear, but more options is always nice. Here’s hoping the new plane is good!
