Youd play the app and any person that might be necessary for the plot. Some examples:

You can be creative with what the app is maybe its just a guy monitoring the incoming pictures to see which app he wants to personally take over for his fun.

A social experiment where you score points by completing dares you get to choose the intensity of the dare up to a point where it may include very taboo topics. Scoring more points moves you up the leaderboards the top 10 are insanely popular.

Underground millionaire ring. The app was only given to the people they chose as interesting it just showed up on their phone and promised money for each completed task. Starting of easy and innocent.
