A Gloryhole First, a Closeted Man second

Dear Reader, this is the story of how I, the author, experienced the thrill not only of a gloryhole, but of an adult bookstore. Enjoy reading, and feel free to leave me your first time. I love to read others' erotic times.

The fluorescent hum of the neon "XXX" sign buzzed like an electric insect as I pushed through the heavy door, the bell chiming a dull, metallic note that seemed to echo in my chest. The air hit me immediately—that distinct, musky perfume of stale cum, cheap disinfectant, and the faint, sweet rot of old paper from the magazine racks lining the walls. My pulse hammered in my throat as I exchanged a crumpled twenty for a roll of tokens, the clerk not even bothering to look up from his phone.

The arcade was a labyrinth of narrow corridors, each doorway draped with beaded curtains that clicked and rattled like bones. The carpet squelched slightly under my shoes—sticky, permanently saturated with decades of spilled desire. I chose a booth at the end of the hall, the furthest from the entrance, my hand trembling as I slid the token into the slot.

The screen flickered to life with grainy, orange-tinted flesh, but my attention was drawn to the wall. The hole. It was crude, roughly sawn through particle board, edges worn smooth and darkened by countless hands bracing against it. I sat on the bench, vinyl cracked and cool against the backs of my thighs even through my jeans.

I didn't have to wait long.

A shadow moved on the other side—a silhouette backlit by the blue glow of another screen. Then the presence was right there, filling the hole. The cock that pushed through was already half-hard, thick and veined, the head a flushed, angry purple that seemed to pulse in the dim light. It smelled sharp and male—sweat and skin and the faint, musky tang of pre-cum beading at the slit.

My mouth watered involuntarily. I'd imagined this moment a hundred times in the dark privacy of my bedroom, but the reality was overwhelming—the heat radiating from the shaft, the way it twitched and bobbed with the stranger's heartbeat, the sound of his ragged breathing through the thin wall.

I reached out, tentative, and the moment my fingers wrapped around that hot, silken steel, a groan rattled through the partition—deep, guttural, desperate. The flesh in my hand surged, growing impossibly harder, the veins standing out like rivers on a map. I stroked once, twice, feeling the texture of the skin sliding over the rigid core, the wetness smearing against my palm.

Then I leaned in.

The taste exploded across my tongue—salty, bitter, copper-tinged, the essence of pure, anonymous male. I opened my mouth and took him in, my lips stretching around the girth, my tongue flattening against the underside where I felt the heartbeat thrumming. He tasted like sin, like surrender, like the dangerous thrill of being used by a faceless stranger who wanted nothing from me but my wet, willing mouth.

I hollowed my cheeks and sucked, the sound obscene and wet in the small booth. My own cock was straining against my zipper, aching and ignored, but I didn't care—all that mattered was the weight on my tongue, the way he thrust forward involuntarily, seeking my throat, the musk of his groin filling my nostrils as I took him deeper.

My hands found his balls through the hole, heavy and tight, drawing up close to his body as he neared the edge. I could feel them twitching, the shaft swelling even larger between my lips, the head flaring. Then he was cumming, pumping thick, hot spurts directly onto my tongue, flooding my mouth with that briny, alkaline taste that made my eyes water and my own cock leak in sympathetic pleasure.

I swallowed greedily, the warmth sliding down my throat, and as I pulled back, gasping, the cock withdrew—spent, glistening, disappearing back into the shadows. But before I could even catch my breath, another shadow moved. Another token dropped. Another shaft emerged, already rigid and weeping, seeking my lips.

And I leaned forward again, addicted, my mouth open and ready, knowing that tonight, I wouldn't be leaving until my jaw ached and my belly was full of strangers' release.

Barely Legal, Barely Related

The summer heat was suffocating, and the old lake house had only one working shower. That’s how it started—innocent enough, or so I told myself.

I was thirty, recently divorced, licking my wounds at my aunt’s vacation property. Ethan was eighteen, freshly graduated from high school, spending his last summer before college earning cash helping with repairs. We’d known each other since he was a kid, but something had shifted. The boy who used to beg me to toss a football had become something else entirely—six feet of lean muscle, sharp jawline dusted with stubble he was clearly proud of, and eyes that held mine a second too long whenever we spoke.

It was the humidity that did it. The third day of a heatwave, both of us stripped down to the minimum—me in worn basketball shorts, him in low-slung swim trunks that rode dangerously low on his hips. I was trying to fix the dock when he emerged from the water, climbing the ladder with water streaming off his body, the sun catching the definition of his chest and the trail of hair that disappeared beneath the waistband of his trunks.

He caught me looking. I didn’t look away.

"Shower’s free if you want it," he said, voice deeper than I remembered. "I just finished."

I should have waited. I should have gone for a swim first, cooled off, cleared my head. Instead, I followed him inside, the screen door slamming behind us with a finality that felt like a decision being made.

The bathroom was small, steam still hanging in the air from his shower. He didn’t leave. He leaned against the sink, arms crossed, watching me with an expression that was part challenge, part invitation.

"You’re staring again, cuz," he said, and the word should have felt familial, but it didn’t. It felt illicit. Dangerous.

"You’ve changed," I managed, my voice rough.

"Yeah?" He pushed off the sink, closing the distance between us. Eighteen, I reminded myself. Old enough to vote. Old enough to enlist. Old enough to know exactly what he was doing as he reached out and traced the waistband of my shorts with one finger. "You haven’t. Still look at me like I’m trouble."

"You are trouble."

He smiled then, sharp and knowing, and pressed his palm against my chest. I was already hard, had been for days, and there was no hiding it in the thin fabric. His eyes dropped, and when they lifted back to mine, there was no hesitation there—only hunger, the kind that comes from years of wanting and finally being allowed to take.

"Show me," he said.

I didn’t make him ask twice. I pushed my shorts down, letting my cock spring free—thick and heavy, already leaking at the tip. His breath hitched, that confident mask slipping for just a moment to reveal the boy beneath, curious and eager.

"Can I touch it?" he asked, and the politeness of it, the deference despite his boldness, made my stomach clench.

"Yes," I breathed. "God, yes."

His hand wrapped around me, and it was perfect—slightly tentative at first, then growing bolder as he felt me pulse in his grip. His palm was calloused from work, rough in a way that made me groan and thrust into his hand.

"You’re bigger than I imagined," he admitted, cheeks flushing, and I realized then how long he’d thought about this. How many nights he’d spent in the room down the hall from mine, listening, wondering.

I reached for him, sliding my hand into his swim trunks and finding him already hard, hot and heavy against my palm. He was thick, cut, and when I stroked him, he made a sound in the back of his throat that I wanted to hear again and again.

"Bedroom," I said. "Now."

We stumbled through the house, leaving a trail of wet clothes. His room was small, a single bed that would require proximity, closeness, bodies pressed together. I didn’t care. I pushed him down onto the mattress and climbed over him, devouring his mouth in a kiss that was all teeth and tongue and desperation.

He tasted like lake water and sunscreen, and he met me with equal ferocity, his hands roaming my back, my ass, pulling me down against him so we were rutting against each other, cocks sliding together with friction that made us both pant.

"I want you inside me," he gasped against my mouth, and the words nearly undid me. "I’ve thought about it. Practiced. I’m ready."

I pulled back to look at him, to make sure this was real. His face was flushed, his pupils blown wide, his chest heaving. He reached into the bedside drawer and produced a bottle of lube and a condom, and the preparation of it—the fact that he’d planned for this possibility—sent a fresh wave of arousal through me.

"Turn over," I commanded.

He obeyed, presenting himself to me, and I took a moment to appreciate the view—the broad shoulders, the taper of his waist, the curve of his ass. I ran my hands over his skin, learning him, claiming him. When I spread his cheeks and pressed a lubed finger against his entrance, he pushed back immediately, eager, hungry.

"More," he begged. "Give me more."

I worked him open slowly, despite his protests, watching my fingers disappear inside him, feeling him relax and open for me. By the time I had three fingers sliding easily in and out of him, he was a mess—face pressed into the pillow, hands gripping the sheets, making sounds that were half-plea, half-praise.

"Please," he whined. "Please, I need you."

I rolled on the condom and slicked myself with more lube, then positioned myself at his entrance. The heat of him against my tip was exquisite torture. I pushed in slowly, giving him time to adjust, feeling the tight grip of him around me inch by inch.

"Fuck," I groaned. "You’re so tight. So perfect."

"All yours," he panted, pushing back to take more of me. "All of it. Give me all of it."

I bottomed out, fully seated inside him, and we both paused, breathing hard, adjusting to the sensation of being joined. Then I began to move—slow, deep thrusts that dragged against his prostate, making him cry out with every stroke.

"Harder," he demanded. "Fuck me harder, cuz. Make me feel it."

I grabbed his hips and gave him what he wanted, pounding into him with abandon, the sound of skin on skin filling the room. He pushed up onto his hands and knees, meeting my thrusts, and I reached around to wrap my hand around his cock, stroking him in time with my movements.

"Close," he gasped. "I’m so close. Don’t stop. Please don’t stop."

I didn’t. I fucked him through his orgasm, feeling him clamp down around me, watching him spend himself across the sheets with a cry that was part my name, part prayer. The sensation of him coming apart around me, the tight pulse of his release, pushed me over the edge. I buried myself deep and followed him, my own climax ripping through me with a force that left me shaking.

I collapsed beside him, pulling him into my arms. We were both sweating, breathing hard, the air thick with the smell of sex and summer.

"That was..." he started, then trailed off, laughing breathlessly.

"Yeah," I agreed, pressing a kiss to his damp forehead. "That was."

We stayed there until the sun began to set, tangled together, neither of us speaking about what came next. For now, it was enough—the heat, the closeness, the secret we’d finally stopped keeping.

Army Strong, Army Fag - Final Part 2 of 2

Part 2

The silence was killing me.

He stood in front of me.

Naked.

I didn't know this man.

Not really.

Yet there he fucking was.

My insides shook. My stomach rolled. The Southern Comfort was beginning to hit me, and between the alcohol, adrenaline, fear, and the naked man standing in my room, I genuinely thought I might puke.

He moved closer.

I immediately stepped backward.

My mind screamed at me to say something.

Anything.

“Listen,” I finally managed. “I'm not trying to cause any issues. What happened this morning—and when you were going to the showers—it wasn't what you thought. Whatever you think it was, it wasn't that.”

Even I didn't believe the shit coming out of my mouth.

His smile disappeared.

And immediately I panicked for an entirely different reason.

What the fuck are you doing?

Was I really going to let this moment walk out the door?

Fear told me yes.

My cock and every fantasy I'd had about him that afternoon screamed no.

I'd spent so much time terrified that somebody would discover I liked men that when one was standing naked in front of me, apparently offering exactly what I'd spent years secretly wanting, my first instinct was still to deny everything.

Because getting caught wasn't some little embarrassment.

This was the Army.

This could destroy me.

He reached for his towel and wrapped it around himself.

Then he turned toward the door.

My stomach dropped.

“Wait.”

He stopped and looked back.

“I think you're right,” he said. “In that case, I need to get back to my room and get dressed. Sorry to have bothered you.”

He opened the door.

And left.

The second it closed, I collapsed against it.

Then the tears came.

Hard.

Big, stupid fucking tears.

All the fear and anxiety I'd been holding inside seemed to pour out at once.

What had I done?

I had wanted this.

Hadn't I?

Hell, I'd jerked off thinking about this man.

I'd imagined his cock.

His smell.

His mouth.

And then the moment something real happened, I'd shoved him away because I was terrified of admitting what both of us probably already knew.

Eventually the crying stopped.

I sat on my bed for maybe a minute.

Then I stood.

Fuck this.

I needed to fix it.

His room was down the hall.

Unlike mine, his housed several soldiers, so the door was usually open. Privacy wasn't something you could count on in a room shared by six men.

I walked inside.

His bed sat roughly in the center, its head pushed against the wall in the same orderly arrangement the Army demanded from everything else.

Dress right, dress.

Even beds had to know their fucking place.

One soldier was leaving as I entered.

Then there were two of us.

Me.

And him.

My anxiety immediately kicked back into overdrive.

“What the fuck are you doing here?”

Thank God, he was dressed.

He sat on the edge of his bed looking at me.

And despite everything going through my head, some part of my brain still found time to remind me how fucking cute he was.

And, naturally, another part reminded me of what I'd just seen naked in my room.

“I think we need to talk,” I said. “But I don't think right here is going to—”

“Don't make this my fault,” he cut in. “You're the one trying to make moves on me and undressing me with your eyes and shit. You were looking at my dick like some fat kid looking at a buffet.”

Jesus fucking Christ.

My eyes immediately went toward the open door.

Was somebody out there?

Had anybody heard that?

My panic went from ten to about a thousand.

“STOP. Just shut the fuck up,” I snapped. “You came into my room and exposed yourself like you thought I was going to what? Suck your dick or something?”

I deliberately said it loudly enough to fight his accusation with one of my own.

Cowardly?

Probably.

But fear makes people do stupid shit.

If somebody was listening, let them wonder about him instead of me.

Then I saw it.

Fear.

Not just mine.

His.

He was scared of me for exactly the same reason I was scared of him.

Neither one of us wanted the wrong person hearing this conversation.

Neither one of us wanted our secret becoming somebody else's business.

The macho bullshit suddenly didn't mean much.

“I've got plans tonight,” I told him, lowering my voice. “I don't have time for this pissing contest. If you want answers—or you've got questions—I'll be in my room for a while. We can talk there. In private.”

Then I left.

I had no idea whether he'd come.

Forty-five minutes passed.

Maybe an hour.

I was getting ready to leave, planning to walk out and catch a cab toward the club district, when somebody knocked.

I opened the door.

It was him.

He'd cleaned up and gotten dressed to go out.

He smelled fucking amazing.

Of course I noticed that first.

He smiled.

I stepped aside and let him in.

Then I closed the door.

The moment I did, he walked over to my bed and sat down.

His hands covered his face.

For a second I couldn't understand what I was seeing.

Then I realized.

He was crying.

This tough motherfucker who had been arguing with me less than an hour earlier was sitting on my bed crying.

And because I apparently had the emotional maturity of a twelve-year-old when uncomfortable, I laughed.

“Are you seriously crying on my bed like a woman?”

I meant it playfully.

Mostly.

He looked up.

“I'm sorry.”

The humor disappeared.

“I'm sorry for coming into your room and exposing myself like that. And I'm sorry for lashing out at you.”

He hesitated.

Then came the question that changed everything.

“Promise me something. If I tell you something that could make me lose everything, you won't tell anybody?”

I knew.

Before he said another word, I knew.

I recognized the fear in his eyes because I'd seen it in myself.

I knew the shame.

I knew the self-hatred.

I knew what it was like to constantly measure every word, every glance, every movement around another man because somebody might notice something you desperately needed them not to notice.

We weren't enemies.

We were two scared soldiers carrying the same fucking secret.

“Look at me.”

He did.

“You're safe.”

His eyes stayed on mine.

“And you don't have to tell me something I already know.”

He looked confused.

“I like guys too.”

There.

I'd said it.

Three words that felt capable of destroying my entire world.

“I like guys too.”

I swallowed.

“You don't have to be ashamed of it. I'm the one who should be sorry for lying and sending you away. And if it makes you feel any better…”

I almost laughed.

“I cried after you left.”

That got the smallest reaction from him.

“Yeah,” I said. “So apparently we're both fucking pathetic.”

I put my arm around his shoulder.

“You're not alone.”

For a moment, neither of us said anything.

Then he leaned toward me.

And kissed me.

Just a peck.

Nervous.

Quick.

Almost like he needed to prove to himself that he could do it.

We separated.

I looked at him.

He looked at me.

Something inside me finally gave way.

I put my hand behind his neck and pulled him back.

The second kiss wasn't a peck.

His lips parted against mine, and I felt his breath escape as our bodies moved closer.

Everything we'd spent the day denying was suddenly right there between us.

When we finally separated, I couldn't help laughing.

“This is fucking crazy. I don't even know who you are, and we've already told each other shit that could ruin both our lives.”

He smiled.

“Oh, but I know who you are, AJ. Or should I say Private First Class Owen?”

I stared at him.

That fucker knew my name.

Meanwhile, I hadn't paid enough attention to his uniform to remember his.

We were the same rank—both PFCs. Higher-ranked privates among the lower-ranked privates, which sounds far more impressive than it actually is.

“Okay,” I said. “So you know me. Who the hell are you?”

His smile widened.

“You can call me Daddy.”

I laughed.

And, annoyingly, the word did something for me.

“No, seriously. I never paid attention to your name tape. You know mine, so who are you?”

“PFC Stockton.”

“Stockton.”

“That's me.”

“Fine. Stockton it is.”

I grinned.

“Besides, I think I'm older, so if anybody's getting called Daddy around here, it should be me.”

He laughed.

During that entire exchange, neither one of our bodies had forgotten what had happened when we kissed.

His pants were riding slightly lower now. His button was undone, his fly open, and there was a damp spot spreading across the front of his briefs.

He was turned on.

By me.

That realization alone sent another pulse of excitement through me.

Stockton caught me looking.

“So I've got a question.”

“What's that?”

“When you were trying to wake me up this morning…”

Oh, fuck.

“…and staring at my crotch, what exactly was going through your mind?”

My face burned.

“Oh…umm…that your ass needed to get up for formation.”

“Bullshit.”

There was that fucking smirk again.

Then he took my shaking hand and guided it toward him.

The joking disappeared from my head.

This wasn't my fantasy anymore.

This wasn't me lying alone on my bed imagining the bulge I'd stared at that morning.

This was him.

Warm.

Hard.

Real.

He pulled me closer and kissed me again.

My fear hadn't disappeared. Somewhere in the back of my mind I still knew exactly where we were.

Army barracks.

Soldiers outside.

A closed door that suddenly seemed nowhere near thick enough.

But with his mouth against mine and our bodies pressed together, fear finally had competition.

Lust.

Years of forcing myself not to look too long, not to say the wrong thing, not to let another soldier notice what I noticed about men came crashing into that one moment.

Stockton's hands moved to my belt.

I felt him working at the buckle while we kissed.

He got it loose.

Then the button.

Then the zipper.

My pants started sliding down.

Okay, fine.

I'll admit it.

I helped.

There was no pretending anymore.

I wanted this.

My pants fell around my ankles, and my boxer briefs followed halfway down.

My cock sprang free, already hard and leaking.

Stockton looked down.

Then back at me.

Whatever nervousness had been between us changed.

He touched me.

The first contact sent a jolt through my entire body.

All fucking day I'd been thinking about touching him, and now another soldier was touching me.

He caught the precum already gathering there and tasted it.

Jesus Christ.

Watching him do that made my cock pulse.

Then Stockton lowered himself.

His mouth closed around me.

“Oh, fuck.”

The words escaped before I could stop them.

Immediately I remembered the door.

The barracks.

Everybody outside.

I bit down on the rest of the sound trying to come out of me.

His hands moved over me while his mouth worked, and the sensation almost overwhelmed me.

“Slow down,” I whispered.

He looked up.

“I don't want to cum yet.”

He gave me that same goddamn smirk.

Even from down there, the bastard somehow managed it.

Then he went back to what he was doing.

I felt him moan around me.

The vibration traveled straight through my body.

My eyes moved down him.

And finally my curiosity won.

I reached for Stockton.

He shuddered beneath my hand.

He was wet.

Really fucking wet.

Precum slicked my fingers and spilled against my leg.

And finally I had in my hand what I'd spent the entire day imagining.

I carefully moved his foreskin.

The head appeared beneath it.

Pink.

Smooth.

Different from mine.

My brain practically short-circuited.

This was my first uncut cock.

I'd spent years hearing all the bullshit people said about foreskin—dirty, nasty, unhygienic, something that needed to be cut off.

And there I was holding one in my hand thinking it was one of the sexiest fucking things I'd ever seen.

Suddenly that rant I'd had with myself earlier didn't seem so theoretical anymore.

I pulled myself from Stockton's mouth.

He looked confused for maybe half a second before I moved him backward onto my bed.

Now I was over him.

His cock was right there.

For a moment I simply looked.

I probably looked ridiculous.

Stockton seemed to realize why.

“This your first?”

I didn't need him to explain what he meant.

I nodded.

His expression changed into something almost proud.

Of course it did.

The motherfucker liked knowing he was my first uncut dick.

I lowered myself closer.

And smelled him.

I'd wondered about that all day too.

There was a faint musk to him. Warm. Male. Different from my own scent, but familiar enough that my body seemed to understand it before my mind did.

Nothing dirty.

Nothing disgusting.

Just Stockton.

I breathed him in.

Then opened my mouth.

The first sensation was softness.

Warmth.

Then taste.

I moved slowly at first because I wanted to experience it rather than rush through something I'd spent so much time imagining.

More precum appeared.

I tasted that too.

I pulled his foreskin back and let myself explore this thing I'd been fascinated by long before Stockton ever entered my life.

He reacted immediately.

His head dropped backward against my bed.

A quiet moan escaped him.

That sound did something to me.

This man who had terrified the shit out of me less than an hour earlier—the man I'd thought might expose me, the man who had accused me of practically undressing him with my eyes—was lying on my bed making that sound because of me.

And suddenly I understood something.

I wasn't ashamed.

Not right then.

For once, I wasn't thinking about whether liking men made me weak.

I wasn't wondering whether somebody could tell.

I wasn't trying to convince myself that what I wanted wasn't really what I wanted.

I wanted him.

So I allowed myself to want him.

I paid attention to everything because I wanted to remember everything—the warmth of his body, the taste of his precum, the faint musk I'd obsessed over all day, the unfamiliar sensation that had fascinated me before I'd ever gotten close enough to experience it.

Every sensation became something I wanted to memorize.

I was completely lost in lust.

And Stockton knew it.

He knew exactly how fascinated I was with him being uncut.

He knew this was my first time experiencing it.

And the bastard enjoyed every second of being my first.

He laid his head back and let another quiet moan escape.

I looked up at him.

Our eyes met.

That same man who had smirked at me during formation was staring back at me now.

Except there was no uniform.

No formation.

No Hooah.

No pretending.

Just two men in a barracks room who had spent the entire day terrified that the other one knew the truth.

Turns out we did.

And behind that closed door, for however long the outside world would leave us the fuck alone, neither one of us had to pretend otherwise.

Army Strong, Army Fag - part 1

Chapter 1

The cotton of his briefs clung tightly enough to the bulge between his legs that there wasn't much left to the imagination.

It was big.

Or at least it fucking looked big.

Heavy. Thick. The fabric stretched around him, with the slightest hint of hair visible above the waistband.

I stared longer than I should have.

“Hey,” I said. “You're going to get into trouble. You need to get up.”

Nothing.

He didn't move.

I looked at his face, trying to figure out whether he was actually asleep, passed out, or just fucking with me. My own heart was pounding hard enough that I couldn't even tell whether I could hear him breathing.

Maybe he really was out.

Or maybe he was awake and knew exactly where my eyes had gone.

That thought should have made me look away.

It didn't.

My eyes drifted right back to his crotch.

Goddamn.

I could feel my body reacting before my brain had decided what the hell to do about it. Blood rushed south, and suddenly I was painfully aware of my own cock pressing against my underwear.

Cock size had always been one of those stupid insecurities I carried around. Nobody had ever called mine small. Quite the opposite. The worst insult I'd ever gotten was being called a grower, and somehow even that had managed to bruise my already fragile ego.

I reached down and adjusted myself.

Then I looked at him again.

Still nothing.

I gave his shoulder a light shake.

“Come on, man. Get your ass up.”

His body shifted slightly beneath my hand, but his eyes stayed closed.

At this point you're probably thinking, Is this motherfucker dead?

No.

He was definitely alive.

And the longer I stood there, the more convinced I became that this bitch had to be playing with me.

There was no fucking way.

I shook him again.

Nothing.

The worst part was the smell.

Not bad. Not dirty.

Just him.

That particular warm, musky scent of another man that I'd spent years training myself not to notice—or at least pretending I didn't notice.

Except I noticed.

Oh, fuck, did I notice.

I had spent enough years secretly lusting after men to know that scent. Even freshly showered, a man's body had its own smell. Skin. Sweat. Balls. Cock. Something warm and unmistakably male.

And standing that close to him, I could smell it.

My brain was rapidly losing the argument with my dick.

I wanted to get closer.

I wanted my face inches from that bulge. I wanted to know what was underneath the cotton. I wanted to breathe him in and find out whether the scent became stronger the closer I got.

My cock hardened more.

Think with the head up here, asshole. Not the one downstairs.

I forced myself back into reality.

Outside the room, the barracks were coming alive.

Boots hit the floor.

Doors opened and slammed.

Voices carried through the hallway as soldiers scrambled downstairs.

Formation.

Shit.

I checked my watch.

I was about to be late.

I looked down at him one last time.

“Seriously. Get the fuck up.”

He stirred but still didn't wake.

For one incredibly stupid second, my hand started toward his leg.

Part of me wanted an excuse just to brush against that massive bulge.

I knew exactly what I wanted.

And I knew I couldn't do it.

Then one of his roommates walked through the door.

My hand snapped back so fast you would've thought I'd touched a hot stove.

I straightened myself and gave the guy an irritated shake of my head.

“I've tried getting his ass up. No luck.”

Then I got the hell out of there.

I ran downstairs and slipped into formation just in time.

A few moments later, I saw movement from the barracks.

There he was.

Wide fucking awake.

He and his roommate hurried toward formation, managing to slide into place without the sergeant catching them.

Lucky bastard.

I tried not to stare.

Failed.

Then his head turned.

His eyes moved across the formation until they landed directly on me.

And stopped.

He smiled.

Not a big smile.

Just enough.

A little fucking half-smirk.

My legs nearly gave out beneath me.

And suddenly there was only one thought in my head.

I don't think he was awake.

No.

I KNOW that motherfucker was awake.

“Owen!”

I snapped back to reality.

The platoon leader was staring at me, waiting for my response during accountability.

“HOOAH!”

The word exploded out of me.

And just like that, I was a soldier again.

Later That Evening...

The night was hot as balls.

Or, to put an actual number on it, around eighty degrees.

That doesn't sound terrible until you've spent the entire day baking in the heat and nighttime refuses to give any of it back. Everything stuck to everything. Shirt to back. Underwear to ass. Balls to thighs.

A shower sounded fucking wonderful.

Unfortunately, everybody else had apparently reached the same conclusion.

With a three-day weekend starting, the barracks were buzzing. Soldiers were showering, changing, making plans, getting ready to hit town. After spending the week in uniform, there was something almost liberating about putting on civvies—regular clothes—and becoming something resembling a normal human being again.

I wasn't planning some heroic escape from post. My parents lived about eight hours away, and spending half the weekend traveling there and back sounded like more trouble than it was worth.

I'd go out.

Drink.

Maybe hit the clubs.

Whatever happened, happened.

For the moment, though, I had something most of the guys in that barracks didn't.

Privacy.

By pure fucking luck, my room wasn't like most of the others.

Instead of six soldiers packed into a large square room with bunks and lockers arranged in Army-approved perfection, mine was long and rectangular with only two twin beds. My bed was closest to the door. My roommate's was at the opposite end, far enough away that his side almost felt like another room.

Better yet, my roommate was hardly ever there.

Most of the time, the room belonged to me.

I FUCKING LOVED IT.

I stripped down to my underwear and fell back onto the bed.

I told myself I was relaxing.

That was bullshit.

My mind immediately went back to that morning.

Him.

That bulge.

That smell.

That fucking smirk during formation.

And, most importantly:

He had been awake.

I slid my hand beneath the elastic waistband and cupped my balls.

They were warm and heavy in my hand.

There was something about being alone that allowed me to stop policing myself for a while. Out there, around everyone else, I had to pay attention to where my eyes went. What I said. How I reacted. Whether I looked at another guy for half a second too long.

In here?

Fuck it.

Nobody could see me.

My hand moved upward until I found my dick, soft and warm, and wrapped my fingers around the base. I gave it a little tug.

Now, I suffer from a far-too-common, ego-busting social anxiety issue.

I am—you fucking guessed it—a grower.

Soft, I don't look like much.

Get me going, though, and I'm a proud seven thick inches with the slightest upward curve.

And for my sexy counterparts across the pond, I'm sorry, but you'll have to do the math yourselves. I'm fucking lazy.

Oh, and I'm circumcised.

What a joy that was to have bestowed upon me.

That has always been a contentious subject for me because I wasn't exactly given a vote on whether I wanted to remain intact. Maybe that's part of what fed my fascination with uncut men. Who knows?

Either way, there wasn't much I could do about it now. Somebody had decided that part of me needed to be chopped off like some icky thing that simply had to go.

We Americans can be some sick fucks about sex and bodies, all while claiming we're somehow more moral.

BULLSHIT!

I tightened my hand around the base of my cock and gave it a few slow strokes.

It began to grow.

And immediately my thoughts went back to him.

How fucking close I'd been that morning.

I imagined what he actually looked like beneath those briefs.

The shape.

The girth.

The weight of him in my hand.

Was he as big as that bulge suggested?

My cock grew harder as I stroked myself, and soon I wasn't imagining only touching him.

I wanted that bulge pressed against my face.

I wanted to breathe in that deep, musky scent of his body that had already driven me half fucking crazy that morning.

I wanted to know what his cock smelled like up close.

What it tasted like.

Whether he was cut or uncut.

My hand moved faster.

The fantasy became clearer.

There was no Army in my head anymore.

No formation.

No sergeant.

No fear of somebody watching me watch another man.

Just him.

Just me.

And everything I wouldn't allow myself to want when somebody else was around.

It didn't take long before precum gathered at the head of my cock.

I slowed down.

I liked watching it.

I swirled the slickness around the head with my thumb, then squeezed gently and watched another drop appear.

I caught it on my fingertips.

For a moment I looked at it.

Then I brought my fingers to my mouth.

I've always had a thing about tasting precum—mine or another man's.

Actually, thing probably isn't strong enough.

Need might be closer.

I sucked it from my fingers.

The taste only drove me further into lust, which made me leak more, which gave me more to play with and taste.

A wonderfully fucked-up little feedback loop.

By then I was in full jacking-off mode.

My imagination took over completely.

Stockton wasn't Stockton yet because I didn't even know his fucking name.

He was simply him.

The guy from that morning.

The guy whose cock I'd stared at through his briefs.

The guy who had looked directly at me during formation and fucking smirked.

In my fantasy, that smirk disappeared beneath me.

I imagined his mouth around my cock. Imagined him taking me deeper while I watched. Imagined him choking on me, working himself down toward the base while I struggled not to lose control.

My breathing grew heavier.

I imagined the sounds.

The warmth.

His mouth.

His face.

That bulge I'd obsessed over all day finally uncovered and waiting for me.

My hand worked faster.

The fantasy became so vivid that I could almost feel him there.

And then there was no stopping it.

My body tightened.

The release hit me hard enough to empty my head of everything except the sensation.

For those few seconds, there wasn't anything to hide.

No shame.

No Army.

No pretending.

Just pleasure.

Afterward I lay there catching my breath, my cock slick and slowly beginning to soften.

I reached for my undershirt and cleaned myself off.

Then I caught the warm scent of my own body.

My balls.

Sweat.

Sex.

My cock twitched again.

Jesus Christ.

Apparently one orgasm wasn't enough to knock this man out of my head.

I wanted him.

More specifically, I wanted to know what was underneath those fucking briefs.

And somehow, I needed to figure out how.

I finally got up and grabbed my towel and soap.

Maybe by now the showers wouldn't be quite as busy and I could get in and out without much trouble.

I'd never particularly liked showering with a million eyes around me, each one seemingly capable of passing judgment.

Sure, the fantasy of some hot, steamy shower scene could turn me on.

Reality was another matter.

There was nothing particularly erotic about crowded Army showers when you were constantly worried that one wrong glance might tell everyone exactly what you were trying so desperately to hide.

I found an open stall, got clean, dried myself off, and even put on fresh underwear before heading back.

Nobody needed to see ol' Johnson flopping around the hallway.

Not that mine did much flopping while soft.

It mostly poked out a couple of inches looking small as shit.

Have I mentioned I'm a grower?

I stepped into the hallway in my shower shoes with my towel around my waist.

And there he was.

Him.

Walking toward the showers.

My entire body locked up.

For somebody trained by the United States Army, I displayed approximately zero fucking courage.

I dropped my eyes and made a beeline toward my room.

But just before I looked away, I caught something.

His eyes.

On me.

And then that smirk again.

Fuck.

Had he been checking me out?

Or did he know I'd been checking him out?

Or was my horny fucking brain simply turning every look into something sexual because I'd just jerked off thinking about him?

I didn't know.

I got into my room and shut the door behind me.

My heart was hammering.

What the hell was he thinking?

More importantly, what the hell was I doing?

I got dressed and reached into my forbidden stash for a bottle of Southern Comfort.

Alcohol wasn't supposed to be in the barracks.

Neither were half the things soldiers managed to hide in barracks.

I unscrewed the cap and took a long pull.

The whiskey burned its way down.

I took another.

Then I dropped back onto my bed and tried to relax.

Tried being the important word.

Because sometime after that, everything changed.

The Ghost in room 214 - Chapter 5 (Final Chapter)

Chapter Five : Exposure

A locker slammed.

Both of us froze.

Footsteps.

Someone had just walked into the locker room.

Every bit of confidence I'd found over the last hour vanished.

Joel straightened beside me.

Specialist Joel Acosta.

It still felt strange knowing his name belonged to the same man who, only hours earlier, had been little more than a perfectly made bed and a pair of boots beneath a bunk.

The ghost of Room 214.

Now he was standing naked beside me, hard, wet, and breathing almost as heavily as I was.

Another set of footsteps came closer.

For one horrible second, neither of us moved.

Then someone appeared around the corner.

He looked young.

Too fucking young, was my first thought.

A white towel hung casually over one shoulder as he walked naked toward the showers. His balls had drawn tight against the cooler air of the locker room, and his cock swung freely against his leg.

He stopped when he saw us.

My stomach dropped.

There was no way he couldn't tell.

Two naked men.

Both flushed.

Both breathing harder than anyone standing beneath a shower had any reason to be.

Steam was still rolling out of the room behind us.

He looked at Joel.

Then me.

Then back at Joel.

A grin slowly appeared.

"Damn. You guys must be prunes by now."

Neither of us answered.

"You've got steam rolling out the door."

He continued toward the showers as casually as if he'd interrupted two guys discussing the weather.

My heart was pounding.

This was it.

This was the thing I'd spent years fearing.

Someone had seen me.

Someone knew.

My mind immediately returned to everything I'd thought about earlier.

The Army.

My career.

My family.

All those years of denying what other people suspected.

And now some stranger had walked through a door and found me standing naked beside another man after we'd obviously been fucking around.

But something was wrong.

The reaction I'd spent years imagining wasn't happening.

There was no disgust.

No accusation.

No laughter.

He didn't recoil from us.

If anything...

He looked amused.

Joel recovered before I did.

"Sorry, buddy. You need the shower? We can leave and give you some privacy."

The guy looked between us.

"No."

That half-grin returned.

"I was just checking out the shower."

His eyes traveled between our naked bodies.

"Looks like I interrupted you guys."

My stomach tightened.

There it was.

He knew.

He absolutely fucking knew.

Except he didn't care.

That confused me more than anger would have.

For years I'd imagined discovery as some catastrophic event. There would be shouting. Accusations. Rejection. Consequences.

Instead, someone had discovered me...

…and the world hadn't ended.

The guy started walking away.

Then Joel spoke.

"Hey, kid."

He stopped.

"That's a nice dick you've got."

I snapped my head toward Joel.

What the fuck are you doing?

The stranger looked back at us.

His cock was already beginning to respond.

Then he smiled.

"Thanks, Daddy."

My brain practically short-circuited.

Daddy?

For one ridiculous second I actually wondered whether I'd misunderstood their relationship.

No.

Impossible.

Joel wasn't remotely old enough to have a son his age.

It was something else.

A role.

A sexual language I hadn't encountered before.

Apparently tonight had decided I needed an education in everything I'd spent my life avoiding.

"Hold on."

Both men looked at me.

I pointed toward the stranger.

"How old are you?"

"Eighteen."

He answered immediately.

I studied his face.

"Seriously?"

"Seriously."

He laughed.

That settled one concern.

It did absolutely nothing for the other hundred running through my head.

Because until he'd walked through that door, I'd somehow forgotten where we actually were.

This wasn't a bedroom.

It wasn't Room 214.

It wasn't even truly private.

We were naked in the showers of a twenty-four-hour gym.

Anyone could walk in.

Someone just had.

And instead of running, I was still standing there.

That realization produced something strange inside me.

Fear.

Embarrassment.

And underneath both...

Excitement.

I didn't want to be caught.

At least I didn't think I did.

But being seen without immediately being rejected had awakened something I couldn't identify.

Suddenly I was intensely aware of my nakedness.

Of Joel's.

Of the stranger's eyes moving over us.

Private.

Public.

Somehow both at once.

I'd never felt anything like it.

The stranger looked directly at me.

The playful expression disappeared.

"On your knees."

I stared at him.

For half a second I almost laughed.

This kid?

Seriously?

He was eighteen.

Younger than me.

Younger than Joel.

He didn't outrank me.

He didn't know me.

He possessed absolutely no authority over me.

And yet something in the certainty of his voice reached directly past every argument my brain was preparing.

My body reacted before my pride did.

I lowered myself.

My knees touched the wet floor.

That shocked me enough that I nearly stood right back up.

Instead, I looked up at him.

"As you wish, sir."

What the fuck did I just say?

Heat rushed into my face.

I looked toward Joel.

He was staring at me.

Not laughing.

Not teasing.

Just watching.

That somehow made everything more intense.

Oh God.

He saw that.

Joel had already seen pieces of me nobody else had.

Now he was watching another one appear before even I understood it.

The stranger stepped closer.

His erection was only inches from my face.

Nothing was physically keeping me on my knees.

That became extremely important to me.

I could stand.

I could tell him to fuck off.

I could grab my towel and leave.

Instead, I stayed exactly where he'd told me to stay.

And my cock began getting hard again.

That frightened me.

What frightened me more was how much I liked it.

I'd spent half the night fighting Joel whenever I thought he'd mistaken surrender for weakness.

I'd pushed him against a wall.

I'd challenged him.

I'd proven I could take control whenever I wanted it.

Now this eighteen-year-old stranger had spoken three words and I'd willingly dropped to my knees.

Maybe submission wasn't about who was older.

Who was stronger.

Who outranked whom.

Maybe there was a difference between having control taken from me...

…and choosing to give it away.

The realization sent another rush through me.

"Open."

My mouth opened.

His cock entered it.

I immediately became conscious of everything.

The warmth.

His pulse.

The taste of precum beginning to gather on my tongue.

The fact that Joel Acosta was standing only feet away watching his roommate willingly kneel before another man.

The fact that someone else could walk through that door at any fucking moment.

My teeth accidentally grazed him.

His hand snapped against my cheek.

"No teeth."

My face burned.

I looked up.

"Sorry, sir."

The words left my mouth without hesitation this time.

And somehow the embarrassment only made me harder.

That was when I realized Joel had moved.

He came up behind the younger man, pressing against him, his mouth finding his neck.

Suddenly the confidence of the stranger standing over me faltered.

His breathing changed.

His body tightened.

I felt it through his cock.

Joel's hands moved over him while I remained kneeling.

The dynamic had changed again.

Nobody seemed completely in control anymore.

Maybe that was the point.

The younger man commanded me.

I obeyed.

Joel worked him from behind.

And every few seconds my eyes darted toward that open doorway.

Still empty.

Still public.

Still close enough to the rest of the gym that another locker door, another set of footsteps, another stranger needing a shower could end everything.

I should have been terrified.

I was.

But fear and arousal had become so tangled together that I couldn't tell where one ended and the other began.

I didn't want someone else to catch us.

But God...

There was something intoxicating about knowing they could.

The younger man's composure finally broke.

"Fuck, Daddies..."

The word struck me differently this time.

Not literal.

Not about age.

A role.

A game.

Another world I hadn't known existed.

And apparently I had stumbled headfirst into it.

Joel continued behind him.

I continued beneath him.

The kid's body tightened.

Then he came.

I swallowed.

Every drop.

When it was over, he looked down at me trying to catch his breath.

Joel looked at me too.

And something about seeing Joel's expression made my cock ache.

He'd watched me.

All of it.

The man I'd spent an entire week barely speaking to had now seen me frightened, dominant, vulnerable, submissive, naked, aroused and kneeling before another man.

There wasn't much left to hide.

Maybe that's why I stopped trying.

What followed became less about who was supposed to be what and more about what each of us wanted.

Control moved between us.

So did attention.

Joel wasn't simply the man who'd cornered me anymore.

I wasn't simply the closeted soldier who'd spent his nights running.

And the eighteen-year-old stranger wasn't merely the kid who'd walked through the wrong door at exactly the right time.

We became three men exploring how far the night could take us.

Sometimes I took control.

Sometimes Joel did.

Sometimes I willingly surrendered it.

And every time I thought I'd discovered the edge of what could turn me on, something else moved it farther away.

I tasted.

I was tasted.

I watched.

I was watched.

I took.

I gave.

I surrendered.

Then took control again.

And all the while that locker-room entrance remained only yards away.

Every distant noise made my heart jump.

Every time footsteps seemed possible, we froze for half a second.

Then nothing.

And the tension started all over again.

Eventually restraint disappeared entirely.

The younger man's cries echoed against the tile.

Joel stopped pretending he cared how much noise we made.

So did I.

Bodies collided beneath the water until I no longer knew whose sweat I was tasting or whose hands were on me.

We took turns with one another until exhaustion began competing with lust.

The newcomer came again.

Joel followed later.

And eventually my own body reached the point where there was nowhere else for the pressure to go.

By then the entire night seemed to exist inside one sensation.

Steam.

Water.

Skin.

Musk.

Voices.

Hands.

Mouths.

The sound of men losing control.

My orgasm tore through me with enough force that my knees nearly gave out.

For several seconds afterward, I couldn't think.

Couldn't speak.

Could barely breathe.

And when my mind finally returned, the three of us were standing beneath running water trying to recover from what we'd just done.

Nobody spoke.

There was nothing left to prove.

No alpha.

No prey.

No daddy.

No son.

For a few quiet seconds, there weren't even three soldiers and strangers naked in a public shower.

There were simply three exhausted men catching their breath while the water carried the evidence of our night toward the drain.

I watched it disappear.

Hours earlier, I'd walked into this gym believing there were parts of myself I needed to keep hidden.

Instead, I'd surrendered control.

Taken it back.

Given it away again.

I'd been watched.

Wanted.

Touched.

Used.

Desired.

And I'd wanted them right back.

The strangest part?

I wasn't ashamed.

I was fucking exhausted.

Probably going to be sore as hell tomorrow.

Still scared about what all this meant.

But ashamed?

No.

Not then.

Eventually the younger man retrieved his towel.

We exchanged a few words that seem strangely insignificant now compared to everything else we'd exchanged that night.

Then he disappeared through the locker-room door almost as casually as he'd entered it.

I watched him leave.

Part of me hoped we'd see him again.

Maybe we would.

Maybe we wouldn't.

Something told me this wasn't the last surprise waiting for me outside Room 214.

Joel bumped my shoulder.

"You alive?"

I looked at him.

Specialist Acosta.

My roommate.

The ghost.

Joel.

"Ask me tomorrow."

He laughed.

And for the first time all night, I laughed with him.

By the time we made it back to the barracks, neither of us had much left to say.

Room 214 looked exactly as it had when I'd left.

Two beds.

Two wall lockers.

Joel's boots beneath his bunk.

Nothing had changed.

And absolutely everything had.

I dropped my things beside my bed and sat on the mattress.

Across the room, Specialist Acosta did the same.

Except I didn't think of him as Specialist Acosta anymore.

Not there.

Not after tonight.

Joel.

There was something strangely intimate about finally giving the ghost a name.

I looked around the room.

A few hours earlier I'd walked out of here intending to run.

To escape the Army.

My body.

My thoughts.

My desires.

Myself.

I'd come back exhausted, sexually spent, and carrying more questions about myself than I'd left with.

And somehow that didn't frighten me nearly as much as it should have.

Joel climbed into bed.

I did the same.

For a while neither of us spoke.

The darkness settled over Room 214.

Then I looked across at him.

His bed wasn't empty.

It had never been empty.

I'd simply never really seen the man sleeping in it.

Maybe the same thing had been true about me.

For years I'd looked at myself without seeing everything that was there.

The gay man.

The frightened man.

The horny man.

The man who wanted control.

The man who sometimes wanted desperately to give it away.

The man who could be masculine and still crave another man's body.

None of those men had appeared tonight.

They'd already been there.

I'd simply stopped running long enough to meet them.

"Night," Joel said quietly.

I smiled into the darkness.

"Night."

Tomorrow we'd put our uniforms back on.

We'd become soldiers again.

We'd stand in formation.

Go to class.

Answer when someone called our names.

Maybe nobody would ever know what had happened tonight.

Maybe Joel and I would never do anything like this again.

I doubted that one.

Maybe there would be other men.

Other nights.

Other places.

Other things about myself waiting to be discovered.

Maybe someday another door would open and I'd find myself stepping through it without knowing what waited on the other side.

For once, I was okay not knowing.

Because I finally understood something.

Running had never made those desires disappear.

It had only kept me from discovering where they might lead.

I closed my eyes.

Across the darkness, Joel suddenly laughed.

"What's so funny?"

"Nothing."

"Asshole."

Another quiet laugh.

Then:

"Goodnight, roommate."

I smiled.

For the first time since I'd arrived at Fort Jackson, Room 214 didn't belong to a ghost.

It belonged to two men who knew each other's secret.

And somewhere beyond those walls was an entire world I was only beginning to discover.

I didn't know where it would take me.

I didn't know who I'd meet.

I didn't even know everything I wanted yet.

But that could wait for another night.

Because for the first time in years—

I wasn't running anymore.

Instead I'd surrendered control.

The Ghost in Room 214 - Part 4

The Ghost in Room 214

Part Four – Two Wolves

Standing before me was my roommate.

For a few seconds, my mind simply refused to accept what my eyes were telling it.

Then everything caught up at once.

"Oh my God."

I stared at him.

"What the actual fuck?"

He didn't answer.

"Who—what—are you fucking serious right now?"

The words stumbled over one another because there were suddenly too many questions and not enough room in my head to contain them.

My roommate.

The fucking ghost of Room 214.

The man I'd barely spoken to for an entire week was standing naked in front of me in a steam room at three in the morning.

And apparently he'd been watching me.

Wanting me.

My panic went into overdrive.

The Army.

My career.

My family.

Oh God. My family.

For years, people had asked whether I was gay. I'd denied it so many times that the denial had become almost automatic. My own brother had defended me when people questioned it, telling them I wasn't gay and that they needed to leave me the hell alone.

And now?

Now I was standing naked in front of another man after letting him do things to me I'd barely allowed myself to imagine.

If anyone found out—

My stomach tightened.

This wasn't just embarrassment.

This could destroy everything I'd only just started building.

And yet...

Goddamn him.

I looked at him again.

He was beautiful.

That somehow made everything worse.

Without the steam hiding him anymore, I could actually study the man I'd been sharing a room with. Moisture glistened across his skin beneath the dim light. His complexion was darker than mine, an olive-brown interrupted by lighter tan lines across his body.

My eyes traveled lower.

I shouldn't have been looking.

I knew that.

I looked anyway.

His cock was different from what I'd known before—uncut, partly hard, the head only beginning to show beneath the foreskin. A small bead of clear fluid gathered at the tip.

I caught myself licking my lips.

That scared me almost as much as recognizing him.

Because beneath all the panic, another thought had already taken hold.

I want him.

Not some imaginary man.

Not a fantasy I could punish myself for during tomorrow's run.

Him.

My roommate.

I wanted to know his body. His taste. I wanted that smell and sweat and skin against me again.

All of those thoughts happened in seconds.

Fear.

Recognition.

Lust.

Shame.

Curiosity.

Desire.

They crashed together so violently that I couldn't separate one from another.

My heart was pounding harder than it had during runs with A Group.

And somewhere inside all that chaos came a realization that frightened me more than anything else:

This changes something.

Maybe everything.

He took a hesitant step backward.

That's when I noticed his face.

The confidence was gone.

The wolf who'd cornered me only minutes earlier suddenly looked like a deer caught in headlights.

His mouth opened.

Nothing coherent came out.

"What?" I demanded.

"Please."

He swallowed.

"I'll leave. I won't bother you."

That stopped me.

He actually looked frightened.

Not of getting caught.

Of me.

For the first time since he'd put his hand over my mouth, I understood something I hadn't considered.

He didn't know what happened next either.

Maybe all that confidence had been real.

Maybe half of it had been bullshit.

Either way, underneath it was another young man who suddenly understood exactly how much trouble we could both be in.

He turned slightly toward the door.

"Wait."

He stopped.

"You can't just leave."

His eyes returned to mine.

"Not after all this. Not after you fucking accosted me and then—"

I stopped.

My voice betrayed me.

"You're gorgeous."

Fuck.

There it was.

I'd actually said it.

His expression changed.

So did mine.

There was no taking that one back.

I could practically hear every defense I'd built around myself cracking.

I forced myself onward.

"Besides..."

I looked at him.

"You didn't finish what you started."

"I don't want any issues," he said immediately.

"Issues?"

Something inside me snapped.

"You think I want to make this an issue?"

He said nothing.

"After everything I've just said, you think I'm looking for an issue?"

Silence.

And strangely, that silence made me feel safer.

Because now I understood.

We were holding the same secret.

Maybe neither of us knew what tomorrow looked like. Maybe we'd walk back into Room 214 and never speak about this again.

I had no fucking clue.

But right now?

Right here?

I wanted him.

That consuming lust I'd spent years disciplining, denying, and exhausting myself trying to outrun was scratching its way to the surface.

Part of me was still terrified.

Part of me wanted to run.

Then the absurdity of that thought almost made me laugh.

Running had brought me here.

Every mile I'd used to escape myself had somehow carried me straight toward the thing I'd been running from.

Maybe running had never been the answer.

Maybe stopping was.

I'd spent all this time believing running was my escape when every mile had somehow been leading me toward the thing I was running from.

I stepped closer.

He didn't move.

Closer.

Until there was barely any air between us.

I could feel his breathing.

Then his heartbeat.

Fast.

Almost as fast as mine.

For one strange second, it felt as though the two rhythms were fighting each other.

Then somehow they weren't.

I leaned forward.

This time, I kissed him.

No surprise.

No hand over my mouth.

No command.

My decision.

Our lips met softly, both of us trembling just enough that I knew neither one of us was nearly as fearless as we'd been pretending.

I felt the tension he'd been holding in his body slowly give way as we kissed.

And then I understood.

He'd wanted this just as badly as I had.

Maybe he'd been hiding behind that whole alpha act for the same reason I'd been hiding behind running.

I closed my eyes.

Something about that moment burned itself into me.

When I pulled away, I couldn't resist.

"Oh, how the mighty have fallen."

He raised an eyebrow.

"Taking me for some weak-ass bitch."

His uncertainty disappeared.

His hand caught my face and pulled me back into another kiss.

Harder this time.

I surrendered to it for a moment.

Then he released me with a grin.

"You think you've got control?"

"Huh. I never said that."

The fear was still there, but now anger was beginning to mix with it.

"Sure, Private. Whatever you say."

His grin widened.

"But it's written all over your face. You better unfuck yourself, because otherwise it's going to be a rough morning."

My jaw tightened.

There it was again.

That fucking confidence.

He released my face.

I stepped backward.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

He stared at me.

I stared back.

Unfuck yourself.

Army language.

Get your shit together.

Fix the problem.

My mind immediately began assembling options.

Walk out.

Call a cab.

Monday morning, request another roommate.

Pretend none of this happened.

Except...

How exactly was I supposed to pretend?

He'd ambushed me in a steam room.

He'd had his face buried between my cheeks.

I'd kissed him.

And apparently the bastard thought a little dominance was enough to bend me completely to his will.

Fuck that.

I smiled.

"All right."

His expression shifted.

"Let's find out what happens when you corner one wolf and he decides to buck against another alpha."

His confusion lasted just long enough.

I rushed him.

His back hit the wet tile.

Before he could recover, my body was against his and my mouth was on his neck.

His grunt echoed through the steam room.

I pressed harder.

For the first time that night, I wasn't reacting to him.

He was reacting to me.

I worked my way back toward those lips I'd already discovered I couldn't get enough of.

God, that kiss.

I bit his lower lip.

He moaned.

His body struggled against mine, but I had the leverage and enough weight behind me to keep him against the wall.

My hand moved between us and finally wrapped around him.

Hard.

Wet.

Uncut.

Feeling him in my hand only fed whatever had broken loose inside me.

"Fuck," he breathed. "You're a bitch for overtaking me."

I released him enough to let him recover.

"You got what was coming to you for sneaking up behind me."

I grabbed my towel.

"You're just pissed because I turned the tables on your ass."

I headed toward the door.

"Come on. The steam is turning you into a common faggot."

I walked out before he could answer.

The cooler air outside hit my wet skin immediately.

I grabbed my bag and headed for the showers.

Somewhere between the steam room and the shower, I realized something had changed.

For years I'd imagined that if I ever actually crossed this line, shame would be waiting on the other side.

I expected disgust. Regret. Maybe panic.

The panic was certainly there.

But not because I wanted him.

I was terrified because someone might discover that I wanted him.

Those weren't the same thing.

And for the first time in my life, I understood the difference.

Thankfully, the showers were still empty.

Good.

I hoped it stayed that way.

Because apparently my roommate needed another lesson:

You don't mess with the bull and complain when you get the horns.

I turned on one of the showers and waited for the water to warm.

It didn't take long.

I stepped beneath it and let the water wash the steam and sweat from my skin.

Then I turned.

He was standing at the entrance.

Watching me.

Again.

Except now there was nowhere for either of us to hide.

No steam obscuring his body.

No shadows.

No mystery.

Just two naked men beneath fluorescent lights finally looking openly at each other.

His skin looked lighter out here, brown and shining beneath the water. He was a little older than me, though his clean-shaven face still gave him a youthful appearance.

And once again, my eyes wandered.

This time I didn't pretend otherwise.

His cock hung soft between his legs, darker than the surrounding skin and uncircumcised.

I'd never been with an uncut man before.

Apparently, that was another thing I was about to learn about myself.

My own cock began responding as I remembered his body pressed against mine.

I reached down and slowly stroked myself.

Never breaking eye contact.

An invitation.

He understood.

He walked toward me.

And for perhaps the first time that entire night, something almost ordinary happened.

He kissed me.

No games.

No commands.

Just that maddeningly good kiss.

Then the ordinary disappeared again.

His hand dropped between us. He pulled back his foreskin and, without warning, began to piss.

I stared.

"What the—"

The stream splashed across his own body first and then mine, running over my cock and down my legs before disappearing beneath the shower water toward the drain.

Every sensible part of my brain told me I should be disgusted.

My erection became harder.

Apparently my sensible parts had taken the night off.

He looked down at what he'd done and then back at me.

"I have to mark what's mine."

Something about those words hit whatever primitive part of me had already taken control.

I released my own stream.

His grin told me everything.

This was filthy.

Strange.

Something I'd never imagined wanting.

And I was harder because of it.

He reached down and wrapped his hand around my cock.

That was enough.

I dropped to my knees.

I took him into my mouth, tasting the mixture of his skin, sweat, precum, and everything else this bizarre night had become.

He moaned.

His hand moved onto my head.

"That's it."

His breathing became heavier.

I let myself sink deeper into the experience.

No analyzing.

No arguing.

No wondering what this said about me.

For once, I simply wanted.

He praised and teased me while I worked him, and every filthy word only pushed me further away from the person I'd been when I walked out of Room 214 hours earlier.

Eventually he pulled me upright.

Another kiss.

Then he turned me toward the wall.

My palms landed against the wet tile.

Water crashed across my shoulders and ran down my back.

He lowered himself behind me.

His hands spread me.

Then his tongue found me again.

"Fuck."

My knees weakened almost immediately.

His fingers joined his mouth, slowly opening me while his tongue continued working against me.

Pleasure traveled through me in waves.

I stopped caring how loud I was.

If someone was working out on the other side of those walls, they probably knew exactly what was happening back here.

At that moment, I didn't care.

When he finally stood, my body actually protested the absence of his fingers.

Then I felt him against me.

His cock slid between my cheeks.

I shivered.

His chest pressed against my back.

His mouth found my neck.

"You are mine," he whispered.

I felt him position himself.

"And you're going to feel exactly how hard you've gotten me."

Then he pushed forward.

My body stretched around him.

"Oh my God."

I gripped the wall.

"Fuck—that's thick."

The sensation overwhelmed everything else.

Every thrust seemed to push another thought out of my head until there was almost nothing left except him.

My body.

His body.

Water.

Heat.

Pleasure.

I had spent so much of my life wondering whether wanting another man made me less masculine, less disciplined, less worthy.

There, against that shower wall, none of those questions seemed to matter.

I simply wanted more.

When he pulled out, an involuntary sound escaped me.

The sudden emptiness almost felt like losing something.

He turned me around and kissed me.

I was dazed.

Pleasure-drunk.

And somewhere inside that haze, the competitive part of me woke back up.

No.

He wasn't getting to own the entire night.

I reached down and wrapped my hand around him.

Still hard.

Still ready.

But instead of turning around for him again, I moved behind him.

"My turn."

I lowered myself.

For the first time, I really looked at his ass.

Hair surrounded his hole and spread lightly across his cheeks.

Something about how unapologetically male it looked drove me wild.

I spread him.

His scent reached me again.

That same raw musk that had shocked me earlier.

Except now I leaned into it willingly.

I pressed my face closer.

His body tensed in anticipation.

I opened my mouth—

A locker slammed.

Both of us froze.

Footsteps.

Someone had just walked into the locker room.

The Ghost in Room 214

Part Three – Recognition

A hand clamped over my mouth.

Every muscle in my body locked.

Before I could twist away, a voice came from somewhere behind me.

"Don't make a sound."

My heart slammed against my chest.

Then came another command.

"Open your mouth."

What the fuck?

For reasons I still don't completely understand, I did.

Something warm and damp was pushed between my lips.

Fabric.

Not a rag.

Underwear.

Sweaty underwear.

The smell hit me before I could even process what was happening.

Musk.

Raw, pungent, unmistakably male musk.

I'd never experienced anything quite like it before. Sweat and body odor mixed with the intimate funk of a man who had apparently been wearing them for some time. It overwhelmed every other smell in the steam room.

My first instinct was disgust.

My second surprised me.

The scent was dizzying.

Almost intoxicating.

Between the steam burning my eyes, the underwear in my mouth, and the stranger pressed somewhere behind me, my senses couldn't seem to agree on whether I should fight, run, or stay exactly where I was.

I still couldn't see him.

Then he spoke.

"I've noticed you for a while now."

Something about his voice bothered me.

Not because it was frightening.

Because it wasn't entirely unfamiliar.

There was nervousness underneath the confidence, like whoever was behind me was trying almost as hard to play a role as I was.

"You're a lone wolf," he continued. "An alpha to yourself. You don't carry many friends."

I tried to answer through the gag.

Nothing intelligible came out.

My thoughts were moving faster than I could control them.

Who the hell is this?

And, more importantly—

How long has he been watching me?

"You and I are the same," he whispered. "Two lone wolves."

His body moved closer.

Then came the question.

"What happens when two alphas cross paths?"

I mumbled something into the underwear.

Apparently he found that amusing.

"I guess we'll have to find out together."

His arm moved around me.

My chest tightened.

This was the moment when everything changed.

I could have fought him.

I could have pulled away.

I could have yelled the second that gag came out.

Instead, when his body pressed against mine, I felt myself relax into him.

That realization frightened me almost as much as he had.

I wanted this.

Maybe not the surprise.

Maybe not being scared half to death in a steam room at three in the morning.

But the man behind me?

The attention?

Being wanted?

God help me.

I wanted that.

His hand reached for my mouth and slowly removed the underwear.

I sucked in a breath.

For several seconds neither of us spoke.

He wasn't holding me anymore.

I could leave.

The door was only a few steps away.

I stayed.

"Thank you," I managed quietly.

His lips touched my neck.

My eyes closed again.

This time, not because the steam burned them.

I leaned into the kiss.

For so long, attraction to another man had existed safely inside my head. Something I could argue with. Something I could punish with another mile. Something I could deny the following morning.

This wasn't inside my head.

This man was real.

His skin was wet against mine, slick from the steam, and I could feel the heat of his body pressed along my back.

My body responded before my conscience could catch up.

So did his.

His lips traveled along my neck while his hands explored my chest. The confidence he'd entered with was returning now, and something about that irritated me almost as much as it excited me.

He thought he'd figured me out.

He thought because he'd surprised me, scared me, and gotten a reaction from my body that he'd already won whatever game he believed we were playing.

Maybe that was the part of me he'd misunderstood.

He turned my face toward his.

I could have opened my eyes.

I didn't.

Not yet.

Instead, I let him kiss me.

And that kiss nearly destroyed whatever resistance remained.

There was nothing rough about it.

That surprised me.

His lips were soft. Patient. Almost tender in a way that didn't match the man who had just shoved his underwear into my mouth and started talking about wolves and alphas.

For several seconds, the entire world became that contradiction.

Hard hands.

Soft mouth.

Steam.

Sweat.

Fear.

Want.

My knees actually weakened.

Then his hand moved lower and wrapped around my erection.

I broke the kiss.

He froze.

For the first time since this began, the control belonged entirely to me.

I smiled.

"I think you just bit into prey that's going to bite back."

Something changed between us.

I felt it immediately.

His confidence hadn't disappeared.

Mine had finally arrived.

He moved behind me again, guiding me forward.

"You still haven't figured out who I am," he whispered. "And what you can't see, you can't catch."

His teeth grazed my ass.

A shudder went through me.

Never in my life had I allowed another person to put me in such a vulnerable position. Everything I'd spent years guarding—my body, my sexuality, my pride—was suddenly exposed to a man whose name I didn't even know.

And somehow that vulnerability was turning me on.

He spread my cheeks.

I swallowed.

My cock was painfully hard now, threatening to drip precum onto the wet tile beneath me.

Then I felt his breath against my hole.

Whatever uncertainty remained inside me collided with something else.

Defiance.

If this was a contest between two "alphas," as he'd called it, then I wasn't going to spend the entire night playing his prey.

"Mmm..."

I glanced back through the steam.

"Haven't you ever been told not to play with your meal at the dinner table?"

Silence.

Then I added:

"Get to work. You're not getting up until you've finished."

His tongue touched me.

My hands shot to the bench.

"Fuck."

Whatever composure I'd recovered disappeared instantly.

His tongue worked my hole while I reached behind me and pulled his head harder against my ass.

"Eat it."

The words came out before I could think about them.

"Fuck—eat that sweaty hole."

He responded with an enthusiasm that made my legs shake.

"Fuck, yes."

I pushed back against his face.

This was no longer something happening to me.

I was participating.

Demanding.

Wanting.

And for once, I wasn't running from any of it.

Then, between breaths, he said something.

Something that cut straight through the haze.

"I've been wanting this ass since you came."

My entire body went still.

Since I came?

Not tonight.

Not since he'd seen me outside.

Since I came.

A week earlier.

The timeline assembled itself inside my head.

I'd only been at Fort Jackson for AIT for a week.

Whoever this man was hadn't discovered me tonight.

He already knew me.

I pulled away from him.

He stood.

"Wait."

He didn't answer.

Instead, he moved behind me again.

His wet body pressed against mine, his erection sliding between my ass cheeks.

The sensation sent another pulse through me, temporarily scattering the questions I'd been trying to assemble.

Then he kissed me again.

And damn him—

I kissed him back.

My thoughts were becoming ridiculous.

Who is this freak?

Has he been following me?

Should I be terrified?

And somewhere underneath all of them:

Why don't I want him to stop?

I finally broke the kiss.

Enough.

Whatever happened next, I needed to know who I was allowing this close to me.

I turned around.

For the first time, I deliberately faced the man who had spent the last several minutes treating me like prey—and discovering that his prey had teeth.

Steam drifted between us.

At first, there was only a silhouette.

Broad shoulders.

Wet skin.

A face slowly emerging as the steam shifted.

I stared.

Something about him was familiar.

Painfully familiar.

My stomach dropped.

No.

There was no fucking way.

I wiped moisture from my eyes and looked again.

I'd seen that face before.

Not somewhere in Columbia.

Not at the gym.

At formation.

In the barracks.

Across a room containing two beds.

The same man whose boots sat perfectly beneath his bunk.

The same man whose wall locker remained closed.

The same man who disappeared before I woke and returned without my ever hearing him.

The man I'd spent an entire week wondering about.

The ghost had finally stepped out of the shadows.

Standing before me was my roommate.

The Ghost in Room 214 - Part Three

The Ghost in Room 214 - Part Two

Part Two – The Run

I gave the cab driver the address and settled into the back seat as Fort Jackson began disappearing behind us.

There was something strangely liberating about watching the post grow smaller through the rear window. The farther we drove, the less I felt like a soldier. No formation waiting for me. No sergeant expecting an answer. No roommate I barely knew sleeping ten feet away.

For the next several hours, nobody needed anything from me.

The ride gave me time to think about what I needed as a young man—or, more accurately, what I thought I needed.

The gym and the surrounding area were still new to me. I'd only discovered the place the previous weekend, but I already remembered the smell. New buildings have a particular scent that's difficult to describe. Fresh pavement, new construction, concrete that hasn't had enough years to collect dirt and exhaust. It wasn't fresh air exactly. If anything, it was almost astringent.

It smelled like new.

I've always noticed things like that.

Maybe because where I came from, fresh meant something entirely different. Fresh was mountain air. Trees. Earth. The kind of air that filled your lungs without asking permission. That was the air that had built me.

This place had been built for something else.

Modern. Clean. Part gym, part spa, and—most importantly—open twenty-four hours a day.

I'd signed the little membership contract the previous weekend and paid my dues. At the time, it felt almost ridiculous paying for a gym when the Army already provided everything I needed to stay physically fit.

But I wasn't paying for exercise.

I was paying for somewhere to escape.

Even if that escape only lasted one weekend at a time, those few hours belonged to me.

And I guarded them selfishly.

The cab pulled away, leaving me standing beneath the parking lot lights with my gym bag over one shoulder.

That's when I felt it.

That strange sensation of being watched.

I stopped.

At first I told myself it was nothing. I was standing alone in an unfamiliar parking lot late at night. Of course my senses were heightened.

Still, I looked around.

Cars.

Lights.

The dark outlines of buildings.

And then, some distance away, a figure.

I couldn't tell whether it was a man or woman. I couldn't even tell whether the person was facing me. Whoever it was stood far enough beyond the reach of the lights that there wasn't much more to see than a dark shape against the night.

For some reason, though, I couldn't shake the feeling that they were looking directly at me.

A shiver traveled unexpectedly up my spine.

That's weird.

I stared for another second, trying to convince my eyes to make sense of what they were seeing.

Nothing.

Probably someone waiting for a ride.

Maybe another insomniac heading to the gym.

I turned away and went inside.

The blast of cool air immediately replaced the heavy South Carolina night. The gym was nearly empty. A couple of people were scattered among the machines, each absorbed in whatever private reason had brought them there at that hour.

Nobody paid attention to me.

Good.

That's exactly what I'd come for.

I headed into the locker room, found an empty locker, and stuffed my things inside. After changing, I went back outside and started stretching.

The temperature had finally begun to cooperate.

If you're a runner, you know the feeling.

There's a particular temperature where the air almost seems smooth. It enters your lungs without burning from heat or biting from cold. Your breathing settles into rhythm, your muscles loosen, and eventually your body seems to understand what you're asking from it.

Then you stop thinking about running.

You just run.

That's where I wanted to be.

It didn't take long.

The road stretched ahead beneath the streetlights, and soon the gym was somewhere behind me. My feet found their rhythm against the pavement.

Left.

Right.

Left.

Right.

Breath.

Stride.

Breath.

Stride.

The thoughts I'd carried out of Room 214 followed me for the first few miles.

Then, one by one, they fell behind.

My roommate.

The Army.

My body.

The things I wanted.

The things I wished I didn't want.

Gone.

For a while, anyway.

I ran for nearly an hour.

By the time I turned back toward the gym, my heart was pounding fast but steady and I'd found what runners sometimes call their second wind. My legs should have been demanding that I stop.

Instead, I felt like I could keep going forever.

That was the high I chased.

Not pain.

Not punishment.

That moment when your body finally stops arguing with you.

When I reached the gym again, the parking lot was even quieter than before.

I didn't think about the figure I'd seen earlier.

Not then.

Inside, I finished the rest of my workout before finally checking the time.

Nearly three in the morning.

Whatever small crowd had been there when I arrived was gone.

I headed toward the locker room.

Beyond it were the showers, bathroom stalls, and my favorite part of the place: the steam room.

It had already become part of my routine.

Run.

Workout.

Steam.

Shower.

Cab.

Barracks.

There was something comforting about having an order to things that belonged entirely to me rather than the Army.

I opened my locker, grabbed my towel, and headed toward the steam room.

Before going inside, I checked.

I always checked.

Partly because I enjoyed having the place to myself, and partly because being alone meant I could finally let my proverbial hair down without worrying about anyone else's presence.

The benches were empty.

No movement.

No voices.

No white streak of a forgotten towel signaling that someone else had claimed a spot.

Perfect.

I opened the door.

Steam billowed into the small alcove outside, briefly swallowing everything around me before I stepped through and pulled the door closed.

Inside, the air was almost impossibly thick.

Within seconds, moisture collected against my skin. I stretched out along the bench, positioned the towel around my waist, leaned back, and let the heat begin working on muscles I'd spent the last several hours abusing.

This was the reward.

For once, there was nothing to accomplish.

Nothing to prove.

Nothing to outrun.

I closed my eyes.

Eventually my thoughts wandered back toward the previous day.

Then—

Clink.

My eyes opened.

Metal.

At least, that's what it sounded like.

I raised my head and peered through the steam.

Nothing.

The fog made the small room seem larger than it really was, swallowing the far wall and softening every hard edge.

I listened.

"Hello?"

My own voice sounded strangely foreign in there.

For a moment, there was only silence.

Then the steam vent erupted from the wall with a violent hiss.

I nearly laughed at myself.

Of course.

I settled back against the bench.

Nobody was there.

I was tired.

Overheated.

Probably still running on adrenaline from the workout.

Eventually I rolled onto my stomach, shifting the towel aside enough to get comfortable. If someone came in, I'd hear the door and have plenty of time to cover myself.

Besides, at three in the morning, who exactly was I worried about?

My eyes closed again.

The steam hissed.

Water dripped somewhere beyond the door.

My breathing slowed.

For the first time all night, my mind became completely quiet.

No Army.

No formation.

No weight standards.

No roommate.

No pretending.

Just me.

Eventually, I decided I'd had enough.

Time for a shower.

I pushed myself upright and swung my legs down from the bench.

My feet touched the wet floor.

I started to stand.

And before I ever made it upright—

someone was on me.

A hand clamped over my mouth.

The Ghost in Room 214

Part One — The Ghost

Late Summer, Fort Jackson, South Carolina

It had only been a week since I graduated from Basic Combat Training, and AIT already felt like a different Army. The screaming had stopped. Nobody was flipping wall lockers or tearing apart bunks looking for dust. For the first time in months, I had a room with only one other soldier instead of an open bay packed with fifty snoring recruits.

Room 214 wasn't much to look at. The walls had been painted so many times the corners had gone soft, and the twin mattresses probably dated back to the Cold War. Still, to me it felt like a hotel compared to Basic.

My roommate had apparently arrived before I did.

His side of the room was immaculate.

Boots lined up beneath the bed.

Wall locker closed.

Bed so perfectly made it looked like nobody had ever slept in it.

The strange part wasn't that he was neat.

It was that I almost never saw him.

We'd exchanged names the first night, maybe a few words in passing after class, but beyond that he was like a ghost. Every morning his bed was empty before reveille. Every night it looked as though someone had slept there, yet I couldn't remember hearing him come in. I never saw him in the dayroom, never caught him playing cards with the other soldiers, never saw him in formation except long enough to recognize his face before he disappeared into another platoon.

Everyone else seemed to be making friends and shooting the shit while making plans.

He stayed to himself.

So did I.

There are moments in the Army when you're surrounded by hundreds of soldiers and still feel completely alone.

The first Friday night at AIT was dangerous.

Too much freedom after weeks of having none. Some guys went out drinking. Some chased the other servicewomen or the locals. Some disappeared until Sunday night, violating every rule and every briefing we'd been given about the privilege of weekend liberty.

Me?

I ran.

It allowed me to be alone.

Out there, I answered to no one but my own thoughts—and, God, there were plenty of them. Running gave me a rush of freedom without feeling the need to impress anyone... or at least that's what I kept telling myself.

The truth was, every mile became a conversation with myself.

Sometimes I replayed the day. Other times I questioned every decision that had led me to that moment. More often than not, though, my thoughts drifted to the one part of myself I spent the most energy trying to outrun.

I criticized my body more than anyone else ever could. Too fat. Overweight. Not muscular enough. Not masculine enough. I wondered if anyone else noticed the things I worked so hard to hide, or if the battle existed only in my own head. I never understood what it meant to be called “too skinny” and hated for it at the same time—because that was never my reality. Mine was different. Mine was always being told I needed to be smaller, stronger, better, as if my body was something that could ever be disciplined into worth.

I told myself I ran because I wanted to stay in shape.

Or because I hated being overweight.

Or because I needed the discipline.

But none of these answers ever felt completely honest. There was always another answer waiting quietly underneath them all.

My mind craved the warmth of another person, but whenever I imagined someone beside me, it was never the woman everyone assumed I wanted. I hated admitting that—even to myself. Whenever those thoughts surfaced, I punished myself by running harder, as if exhaustion could somehow outrun desire. It never did. It only left me too tired to argue with myself until the next run.

I would often make excuses to push myself beyond the limits of my body, and even more so when I went through basic training—where they teach you to give everything, and when you have nothing left, you are expected to give more. Running became less about discipline and more about proving I could erase what they saw when they looked at me.

Late summer in South Carolina had a way of holding onto the heat long after sunset. The air hung heavy with humidity, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth as a light breeze drifted through the trees. Even after the sun disappeared beyond the horizon, the day's heat clung stubbornly to the pavement. Only a few hours before dawn did the night finally begin to cool, and even then it was only a brief reprieve before the morning sun reclaimed everything it had surrendered.

By the time I pulled myself back from those thoughts, the sun had finally slipped below the trees. The barracks had taken on a different life. Doors slammed somewhere down the hallway. Laughter echoed from outside as groups of soldiers piled into cars or flagged down taxis, eager to put the Army behind them for forty-eight precious hours. Friday nights at AIT belonged to freedom.

Everyone else seemed determined to escape the Army for the weekend.

Mine belonged to routine.

When I stepped into Room 214, it was exactly as I'd left it.

My roommate's bed was still perfectly made.

His boots sat neatly beneath the frame.

His wall locker remained closed.

He was gone.

Again.

In the week we'd shared that room, I'd learned almost nothing about him. We'd exchanged names and the occasional "morning," but that was it. He was there just enough to remind me I had a roommate, then gone before I ever had the chance to know where he disappeared to. I never saw him hanging around the dayroom or joking with the other soldiers. It was as if he existed only in passing—another face in formation and a perfectly made bed waiting for me at the end of each day.

I dropped my bag beside my bunk and peeled off my uniform. The Army had issued us PT gear like everyone else, but I rarely wore it when I ran off post. Out there, I wasn't trying to be another soldier. I was trying to remember who I was before the uniform.

I grabbed my towel and water canteen, locked the room behind me, and headed downstairs to catch a cab.

I pulled the door shut behind me and listened to the lock click into place.

His bed was still perfectly made.

Mine wasn't.

For another weekend, Room 214 belonged to a ghost.

I still knew almost nothing about the man who slept ten feet away from me every night.

At the time, I thought that bothered me.

I had no idea...

...he already knew almost everything about me.
