Despite years of public discussion about Schedule 1 research barriers in relation to specific substances, particularly psilocybin, the Home Office's own data infrastructure does not track licences by substance.

A licence covering Schedule 1 research is typically not a licence for psilocybin, or for MDMA, or for any other particular compound. It is a Schedule 1 licence “in general”.

Even researchers, journalists and parliamentarians wishing to evaluate whether UK psychedelic research is being constrained at the licensing level cannot do so through routine FOI or parliamentary mechanisms, because the underlying data structure does not record the information at the resolution needed.
