"Laundry Day" - Embroidery [My first embroidery ever! All critiques/feedback welcomed and encouraged!]
Laundry Day
6" Embroidery on unbleached cotton fabric. 7" hoop. 12 hours.
#1 in a series I have planned called “Boys Doing Stuff”
(The title is absolutely unironic and for real reflects how unseriously I take my art and myself.)
Materials Used:
Print on water soluble stabilizing paper.
My own illustration/pattern.
Unbleached cotton fabric.
#9 and #8 Needles.
"Tyche Special" (meaning - knock off) embroidery thread in DMC 210.
Cheap plastic hoop for the embroidery.
Fancy wooden hoop for the hero shot.
Stitches Used:
Split Stitch 1 Thread
Split Stitch 2 Threads
Stem Stitch 1 Thread
Stem Stitch 2 Threads
Stem Stitch 3 Threads
Long and Short 1 Thread
Long and Short 2 Threads
Satin Stitch 1 Thread
What I think I did right:
I like that I seem to have captured the illustration style I was going for.
I like how using more thread helped me get the illusion of movement and line thickness.
I like that despite being suuuuuper tedious, all the tiny details really do show and are understandable (Folded clothes on the background, hinges on washing machine).
I like that it has rhythm and it flows, it’s silly and imperfect and isn’t super serious looking.
Love the body hair! Really worth the effort.
Think the nipples look kinda awesome too, I bulked them up by using satin stitches over each other.
What I think I could improve on:
My Long and Short doesn’t look like others I’ve seen on embroidery!!! This one is the hardest for me so far - Mine feels bulky, very amateurish, even the one thread one, I really don’t know how to make it blend better!
I did’t nail the eyes - He’s supposed to be looking straight at the viewer but I think his left one ended up a big bigger and so now he looks like he’s giving a flirty side eye.
I wish the pit hair was a bit more hairlike, maybe I should have done 1 strand instead of 2? Looks like a shadow, which is good, but doesn’t look like hair.
What I've learnt:
I could have saved myself a lot of time if I went from 1 thread stitches to 3 thread stitches… Having to do 1s between 2s and 3s was kinda hard.
The Long and Short is fucking hell and I don’t know how people thread paint. Fuck all you talented people (but also wow, you're awesome, please help me understand it).
Teeny tiny foreskins are hard to embroider.
Needles are pointy and sharp.
I am definitely a grandma trapped in a middle aged man's body.
