When elders confronted him for his sacrilege he went into a rage a slew the wisest and oldest among them, casting his body out for the wild beasts without proper burial.
Sedna, the Sea Mother, was angered by this and put many curses on Unalaq and his followers. Loosing their strength in battle, enemies overcame them and stole their women. Fleeing north in kayaks, Unalaq took refuge on the land that is now called Iqalliq. But Sedna closed her gates in the depths of the sea and no seals or whales could be found by the hunters.
Humiliated and facing extinction, Unalaq entered into a pact with the Moon Man. For this reason, no girls are born to the people of the far north. Instead the weaker among them must submit as mates for the stronger and if they will not do so voluntarily they are cast out on the tundra until the Moon Man emasculates them and they submit.
