A Studio Knot: Chapter 2 - Sarah Thompson
Chapter 1: Link
Interlude 1: Link
Summary: Jen, reeling from her first shoot, goes to the studio for support, and finds herself meeting her personal hero, YouTuber and activist Sarah Thompson, and observing her shoot with Finn. Sarah gets her first real glimpse that her public advocacy has consequences she never accounted for.
CHAPTER:
The TV droned in the background, low and steady, as Jen stared at the microwave. It was counting down on the leftovers from last night - pasta, her go-to comfort food. She looked at her phone to check for notifications and saw she’d already swiped all of them away. Pursing her lips, she looked back at the microwave timer, as it counted down to zero. As it did and the microwave started to beep, her phone vibrated, startling her slightly. She looked down; it was a text message from Carla.
“Got a few minutes to chat?” Jen stared at the text for a moment before she pulled the food out and set it on the counter. She paused, debating on if she wanted to do it and reached out for her phone to lock it before sighing, and called Carla who answered almost immediately, “Hey Carla, it’s… it’s Jen. Is something wrong?”
Carla replied, “Hey Jen. No no, everything’s good. I wanted to check in on you. I just read the report from the doctors. Titus said everything’s good. But Elena recommended an extended break and another therapy session before the next shoot and I was a bit worried.”
Jen sighed as she picked up her food and wandered over to the dining table. “Yeah, it kinda got to me. I mean, I know what I signed up for. But after sleeping on it, and you know after that high came down, the crash hit me. Kinda hard.” Jen paused, unsure if she wanted to continue talking.
“You can talk to me. I started this studio for a reason, Jen,” Carla said quietly. “We spoke about it the first day we met.”
“Yeah.”
“I stand by what I said that day. What you decide at the end of the day is what I will back, no question asked.” Carla paused for a moment before continuing, “As long as you promise me that you’re actually going to talk and not bottle things up, okay?”
Jen chuckled, “Am I that easy of a read?”
“No,” Carla replied, “I just… I know people. I’ve seen it before. I’ve been running this place for over five years, Jen. It’s taught me a lot. It’s hard on people. We filter out the bad ones, sure, but for the good ones like you? It hits the hardest.”
“Even if I fucked a dog on camera?”
There was a moment of silence — long enough that Jen wondered if she’d said something that Carla couldn’t wave away. Then: “Especially”
Jen stayed silent, looking at the food in front of her. She poked at it with the fork in her hand. It did not look appetizing. She sighed.
“Come on over to the studio. My afternoon is free. I’ll have to start prepping for a scene in a bit but once that’s done, I should be good to go for a while before the scene begins.” There was a pause for a moment and then Carla said, “Come now, okay? I’m not saying you should come in the afternoon.”
“Okay. I will.”
~~~
It was an hour later when Jen knocked on the studio door. Maya opened and smiled widely when she saw Jen.
“Hey you.” Maya pulled her into a warm hug. “Good to see you. Come in, come in.”
Jen was a bit taken aback, but appreciated the hug, leaning into it for a moment longer. When she broke it, Jen met Maya’s eyes. “Thanks Maya.”
“Looks like you needed it.” Maya led her inside. “Carla just stepped out for a phone call. You came at the right time. We have a fair bit of time before the next scene starts. Want to wait in her room?”
Jen nodded wordlessly as she looked around at the studio. It felt familiar yet alien at the moment, with every cell in her body saying that she should be at home, alone, away from everyone. “Thanks Maya,” she said, repeating herself.
Maya stopped and looked at Jen. “Hey, I know where you’re at and I’m… I’m just glad you’re here.”
“What? Why?”
Maya paused, as if she was weighing the words in her mind before she spoke, “I think I know what you’re going through. And the one thing you need to do right now is be around people. Better if you’re around people who understand, sure, but definitely better to be around people than be alone. Which I’m assuming is what you were planning on doing.”
Jen opened her mouth, as if to counter and sighed, “Yeah, you caught me. I wanted to go back. It just feels a bit weird being back. It feels familiar but also unfamiliar.”
“I don’t want to name that in case that it triggers you more.” Maya gestured forward, “You need to talk to Carla since she has helped people before. Even if she can’t, she’ll make sure someone can and will.”
Jen nodded.
As the two walked, they ran into Katie and another person, a blonde woman. Katie smiled and hugged Jen, “Hey you! Glad you’re here! This,” she gestured towards the other person, “is Annalena.” She looked at Annalena, “This is Jen, our newest performer.”
Jen smiled slightly and offered her hand. Annalena shook it brightly, leaning in for a quick cheek kiss. “It’s a pleasure, Jen,” she said. Her accent was distinct. “I’m half German, yes,” she added with a smile.
Jen nodded. “I actually placed it. My cousin is half-German too, but she was raised in America. But I’ve met enough of her family before that I could guess,” she said, smiling. “You know, someone online once told me my accent sounded German when I spoke some words. Turns out I say the word ‘food’ specifically in a German accent. And I don’t know why!”
Annalena laughed. “You do,” she said. “It’s very distinct. Also, I love your cardigan. It’s cute!”
Maya leaned in. “I made her get it when I took her out shopping one day.”
“She did,” Jen agreed, “I would have completely missed it. I wasn’t looking for anything at all.”
As Maya tried to talk, Katie interrupted. “How come I wasn’t there?”
Maya sighed, “It was during the orientation, Kats. You had to deal with the other interviewees. I didn’t want to disturb you.” She paused, “Tell you what, we can go next weekend, okay?”
Katie narrowed her eyes. “I’ll hold you to that, Maya.” She then turned to Jen, “What are you doing here Jen? Just wanted to drop by?”
She shook her head. “Sort of, but I wanted to drop in to talk to Carla.”
“Oh! Then we won’t keep you. Anna was leaving anyway. She came to pick up her recording equipment.” Katie leant in conspiratorially, “I’d stolen it to record a song and she needs it back for her friend’s marriage.”
Annalena chuckled but nodded, “Yes, you should go see Carla. We can always catch up Jen. It was good to see you.”
“Good to see you two,” Jen replied.
As the two left, Maya called out Katie, “We’re still doing lunch together Kats. I finally cooked Pho.” Katie whooped in glee and spun around to give Maya a big grin before continuing to walk away.
Maya smiled and gestured her to follow along and within moments, Jen stood inside of Carla’s director room, the same one she sat in a few days ago, reviewing footage of herself. She pulled out her phone, and was annoyed at a lack of notifications to distract her and then shoved it back into her pockets. She debated if she wanted to leave and as she stood up, the door clicked and Carla walked in.
She smiled and hugged Jen without waiting and held it until Jen broke it. “I’m glad you’re here. Sit sit. Sorry I’m late. I had to deal with a few phone calls. Just some legal stuff. How are you doing?”
Jen sat down across Carla. “Better. Worse. It’s weird. Part of me wants to run out. Part of me wants to stay. And a final part of me thinks I’m overthinking it all.”
Carla nodded thoughtfully. “Yeah, I get that. I’ve had more than a few people who have felt the same way. It is a hard decision you’ve made and it’s harder because you have a good head on your shoulders. I meant what I said earlier, Jen. The fact that you’re considering stopping is good. It means you’re trusting yourself. It means that you have the right framework.”
“But I feel like shit.”
“Because that’s your brain punishing you for doing something it thinks is outside of its ethical framework.”
“That’s what Voss said.”
Carla leaned back. “She probably said it better and had more to say.”
“Yeah,” Jen replied. “She had more.”
“She knows better, after all.” Carla paused, looking at Jen. “I’ll stand by you, Jen. Whatever you decide. Whenever you decide it. You want to stop now? You got it. You want it off the site? You got it. It’s your call. Always. Okay? I wanted to say it so that you heard it for real.”
Jen was silent as she processed it, looking at Carla, away and down, and then at Carla before she replied. “Thanks Carla. I guess I did want to hear that.”
“Good.” Carla stood up. “Let me get Sarah in. You should meet her. She’s nice.”
“Sarah?” Jen asked, confused before she blinked hard, “Sarah Thompson?”
“The same,” Carla said as she hit a button on her table to engage the PA system and spoke into it, “Hey Sarah, come to my room please?”
“Wait, Sarah’s the performer today?! Not Annalena?” Jen asked.
Carla frowned. “No, why would it be Anna? She was here to pick up her recording equipment. Sarah’s shooting her 12th scene. Should be out of prep now.”
“I didn’t… I thought… Oh God…”
As Carla looked at Jen curiously, there was a knock on the door and it opened to reveal Sarah Thompson. She was shorter than Jen with bright blue hair that gently framed her face. “Hey Carla,” she said, “You wanted to see me?” As she stepped in, she saw Jen and continued, “And you have company?”
Carla nodded, “Yeah, this is Jen, our newest.” She looked at Jen, “Jen, this is Sarah Thompson, one of our best.”
Sarah laughed, “I’m only ONE of your best? Harsh.” She looked at Jen and smiled, “Good to meet you Jen.”
Jen stood up and reached out to give Sarah and handshake that she returned. “I… I’m a bit surprised, I didn’t expect to run into you today,” Jen said.
Before Sarah could ask what she meant, Carla interjected, “I’ll go and get the last bit of documentation ready from Katie. You two can talk.”
Sarah nodded as she sat down on the couch and Jen sat beside her. Carla left the two alone and Sarah asked her now, “So… You didn’t expect to run into me today?”
Jen nodded, a bit red, “Yeah. Long story. I thought Annalena was performing today but I didn’t sort of process that she was just visiting. But yeah, I’m a bit of a fan. Well… I am a fan. I follow you online.”
“Really?” Sarah asked, as she adjusted herself. “You like what I do?”
Jen replied, “Yeah! You have some wonderful video essays on global warming and I loved the most recent one you did on gaming and representation.”
Sarah leaned back, “Oh! You didn’t mean all of this. You meant the work I do outside of the studio.” She paused and laughed lightly, “I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who’s led with that, especially someone new. Most people talk to me about the work we do here, in the studio.”
“I can imagine. You’re like one of Carla’s biggest draws,” Jen said. “You and Annalena are like rockstars, in a way.”
“Really? That’s how you see me? A rockstar?” Sarah asked.
Jen paused, ruminative, looking down at her hands. “I mean, in a way. Carla’s studio does things differently, sure. But you’re outspoken about what you believe in, and I think you’re one of the few people in the whole studio, apart from Carla who talks about the non-consent of it all.”
“Hmmm,” Sarah said, “I’ve not had someone engage with that angle of mine. Well, I mean some have. But anyway. I assume you’ve seen the forums and the interviews. Why did it stick with you that much?” she asked.
“Well, it was kind of the last thing I needed to hear,” said Jen.
“What.”
Jen looked up at Sarah, “When I was debating on if I should I should join the studio, I looked at your work and stuff here.” She paused and turned slightly red, “Not your videos but like your essay on the site and the three videos. You did like two interviews and a Q&A with Carla. And I thought you had a very cogent idea.”
“Cogent? How?” Sarah asked evenly.
Jen paused and thought for a moment before responding, “You were able to hold the idea that this didn’t have a clean answer, about how the dogs couldn’t really understand and consent, but still perform. It was honestly kinda inspiring.”
Sarah shifted slightly in her place and looked at Jen closer. “You’re saying I opened the door for you?”
A shrug, “I don’t know. I think so. I mean I wanted to experience it. I have. I just… If you’d asked me a few days earlier, I would have been more excited about it, I guess.”
“What do you mean?”
Jen said, “Well, it’s a long story and I don’t want to bore you.”
Sarah shook her head. “No, I have time. I think?” She looked at her watch. “I actually don’t know if I do. Carla hasn’t come back in which I’m assuming means that I’m not running late. Also, we fuck dogs as a hobby. This won’t be boring. Trust me.”
Jen still looked unsure, pursing her lips. “I guess. But I don’t want you getting into trouble on my account.”
Sarah chuckled, “You think I’m already not in trouble?”
Jen smiled and to her it finally felt a bit natural. “I mean, you’re only proving my point that you’re a rockstar.”
“Touché!” Sarah then asked, “Okay. Tell me what’s going on. It’s the drop, I’m assuming?”
Jen nodded. “I just feel shitty. I know it’s what is supposed to happen, especially since it’s my first time. I didn’t-”
“Wait, your first?” Sarah said, interrupting. “Sorry to interrupt you but I did hear that Carla was filming a first time mount. That was yours?” Jen nodded. Sarah sighed and leaned back in the couch, looking up at the ceiling. “When’s your next scene?” she asked.
“Voss delayed it by 3 weeks.”
“So, what, in 7 weeks?” Sarah asked. “Probably different dog too, I’m assuming?” Jen nodded. Sarah huffed and straightened herself to look at Jen. “I don’t know why Carla said yes to filming your first. I’m going to have a word with her.”
Jen shook her head, “No, I mean I wanted it to be filmed that way. It was what I wanted.”
“Did you?”
“I mean… I don’t know now, but I did want it.”
Sarah pursed her lips and at that moment, Carla peeked back in, “Hey you two. Sarah, we’re almost ready. You good to go?”
Sarah looked at Jen and looked back at Carla, “One mo’ and I’ll be out, Carla.” Carla nodded and closed the door after herself. Sarah turned back to Jen, “I hear you. I’ll come after the scene, if you’d like. Think about it, okay?”
She stood up and began walking to the door when Jen called out, “Hey Sarah, I… How do-…” Jen cut herself off, sighed and shook her head, “Never mind.”
Sarah stood at the doorway. “Are you sure?” she asked.
Jen nodded and Sarah left Jen sitting alone in the room. A few moments later, Jen sighed, feeling like she’d let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding in. She chuckled lightly, and stood up and stretched slightly.
There was a knock on the door and Carla peeked in again, “Hey Jen, feel free to stay here or wander around. It’s your call. I know Katie is free for a bit if you’d like to talk to her.”
“I… I’ll think about it. I don’t mind staying here,” Jen said.
Carla stepped inside and walked over to her desk and gestured for Jen to join her. “Here, I already had everything set up earlier. I thought I’d be here today and working on the shoot like I usually do but Chris had an interview today and I forgot he’d scheduled it. So I figured I’d be out there helping the crew.” She reached on the array of monitors on her desk and pressed the button and it turned on. “If you want to see Sarah’s shoot, you can watch it here. Okay?”
“Really?”
“You don’t HAVE to watch it but Sarah is something else when it comes to this. Think you’ve experienced some of it already, haven’t you?” Carla asked.
“Yeah,” Jen said, nodding, “she’s nice.”
“She’s very grounded. It’s why I wanted you to talk to her.” Carla paused and looked up at Jen. “If there’s anyone you need to talk to, it’s her. Yeah?” When Jen nodded again, Carla continued, “Good, now let me get out there. Sarah said something about yelling at me. I’ll also go and deal with that.”
Before Jen could respond, Carla was already walking out, leaving Jen alone again. She didn’t go to the console but resigned to sit back on the couch. She fished out her phone and was annoyed to see that she didn’t have any notifications that mattered, just one spam message asking her if she needed extended warranty for her car.
Jen looked at Carla’s desk again, debating. She fished out her wallet and pulled out what she was looking for, her tarot coin. It was a little silver piece with the wheel of fortune on one side and the universe on the other. She didn’t use it the way it was meant to be used however. She flipped it and while it was in the in the air, she said, “the universe”. It landed on the other side and Jen sighed. She knew what she actually wanted and she made her way back to the console.
The screens were all positioned with the angles you’d expect - low, close, intimate angles, all meant to capture all the details with as much fidelity as humanly possible. Carla had shown her what would be captured earlier and why. Jen had seen the angles before, it’s not like she hadn’t bought videos from Carla’s site herself, but something about seeing it in person had unsettled her; the gaze of it all.
Jen looked at the screen and saw Sarah and Maya chatting in the corner of the screen. Sarah was wearing a thin robe now, like the one she had worn the last time but the location was different and Jen realised that it was a different part of the studio. The rig and the platform was slightly altered, not completely the same but close enough. “Hmm. Right, this is probably what Carla meant when she said she’d be rotating the shoots throughout the studio,” Jen thought.
On another screen, Jen saw Carla talking to other members of the crew. She recognised them but with everyone moving about quickly to get the scene in place, she couldn’t really track them. Sarah then moved to the platform and disrobed, and stared at it. Jen’s breath caught. “She’s beautiful,” she said aloud and almost immediately clapped her hand over her mouth, turning red again. Jen spun around on the chair and looked at the wall straight for a few moments before turning back.
The headphone had been leaking audio from the set and Jen reached for it and held it up to her ear. She could hear the audio equipment pick up everything, not just the audio from the scene but also from the crew. Jen then donned the headphones and she could hear Carla’s instructions clearly and Mark speaking to the dog, in low gentle tones. Moments later, the dog appeared on screen - Finn, the Rottweiler.
Jen remembered Finn. He was sweet and playful, almost always ready to play fetch and adored getting scratches. Sarah didn’t look at Finn and got into position in the platform.
Mark instructed Finn. “Stay,” he said and he moved closer to Sarah and he asked the same question he’d asked Jen a few days ago, “Miss Thompson, do I have your consent?” Jen’s breath quickened and she removed the headphones and quickly pushed herself away from the console. Standing up, she walked away and almost got to the door when she paused, her hand on the door. “But… How…” she mumbled. Her hand wavered for a second before she turned back to the console, resolute.
By the time she was back at the desk, wearing the headphones, Mark was applying the musk to Sarah and then he held it under Finn’s nose to start the shoot and Finn reacted almost immediately and headed straight for the ‘source’ of the smell, Sarah.
Finn licked at Sarah’s pussy, snuffling at it. Jen could his wide tongue licking her. It only lasted a few moments before Finn reared up and tried to mount Sarah. His hips swung, trying to connect with Sarah and he missed and dismounted. Without waiting for Mark, he mounted her again and this time he connected quickly, his cock finding Sarah within a few jabs.
His thrusts changed from wide and searching to quick, and powerful. The console showed it all: Sarah’s face at the moment his cock connected, her body moving in tandem with his thrusts, a close-up of the “glory” shot angled at her pussy, and a wide shot of the scene that to Jen somehow felt even more erotic than the close-up.
Sarah’s gasps filled Jen’s ears and she heard him say “Good boy” and a thrill went down Jen’s body. Sarah’s face was perfectly poised, her cheeks red, her mouth slightly open as she panted at the exertion. Her expression was focused still, in control. And yet, she spoke to Finn.
Jen was mesmerized. The action was quick. Finn’s jackhammer thrusts lasted under a minute as Sarah winced. Jen knew his knot had slipped inside her and she checked that angle and it had. This thrusts grew shorter as he tried his best to seat his knot inside Sarah’s pussy. Jen’s face flushed as she realised this was what she experienced herself. She looked back at Sarah’s face and the contrast was stark.
Jen had come undone, whiting out almost but Sarah? She was focused, just like she’d written about it on her blog. Sure, she’d already seen Sarah’s movies but to see it happen in real time felt visceral.
Sarah’s writing echoed in her mind. “A dog is working on instinct, pure biology. Sure, I know what I’m getting into and my body is going to respond and be reactive. I just maintain composure.” Jen’s eyes wandered over Sarah’s body, taking it in. She saw the scratches that Finn had left on Sarah’s arms, and torso, how her body moved with Finn’s thrusts. Jen shifted in her chair, a little uncomfortable. She looked away for a moment before looking back, realising that for the first time in a long time, she found someone attractive, “that” way. And of course, it had to be her.
And then Finn’s hips stilled. He had knotted her. Sarah’s face dropped at the same moment, panting. Jen bit her lip, continuing to watch as it dawned on her that Finn was ejaculating in her now. Her skin pricked slightly, in arousal, and at that moment Sarah whispered, “Good boy” to Finn again with him wagging his tail at her voice.
A few moments later, Finn moved, almost as if he was trying to dismount and Mark quickly moved in. He was trying to turn and Mark helped him and the two were now butt to butt.
“I want that,” Jen whispered. “I want Ranger to turn just like that.”
The knot lasted well over 15 minutes and Sarah had not touched herself in all that time, letting her body work on its own with Finn. Jen thought so at least. As the knot deflated, Finn tugged at their connection, eliciting some gasps and moans out of Sarah before the final pop-out where his thickness emerged. That thin burst of watery cum followed, and Sarah’s pussy pulsed, searching for the stretch that held her open. Sarah sighed in content and she slowly dismounted from the rig.
Another flow of thin cum flowed out of her pussy, down her thighs. Sarah looked around and saw Finn standing there, panting, happy, unbothered. She leaned down and laid a kiss on his head, leaving a big red smudge.
Carla then called out, “Cut.”
In the director’s room, Jen stared as Sarah stood up, seemingly unbothered, in control. It felt masterful. It also felt visceral. The audio and the feed from the few cameras cut, and Jen heard her own breathing. It was deafening.
~~~
Sarah stood up and looked at Carla. She felt the trickle of fluid run down her thighs and grumbled internally. She felt used. Finn had a penchant for making her feel that way. Carla felt her gaze and looked at Sarah, opening her mouth to talk but Sarah beat her to it. “All good?” Sarah asked.
Carla nodded, “Yep. Good angles, great scene as usual.” She looked around and nodded at Mark who was taking Finn away and then looked back at Sarah, “Shower?” she asked.
“Yeah, heading there now.” Sarah took the paper towels and wet wipes from Maya graciously and wiped herself down a bit before looking back at Maya. “Do me a favor, just ask Jen to stay, yeah?”
Maya nodded. “Need company?” she asked. Sarah shook her head and started walking to the the locker room and showers, on the far side of the studio. She wanted to be alone, away from everyone. And the showers would let her. As she walked to the lockers, unrobed and naked, the cold maintained air did nothing to ease the knot in her stomach. Her mind wandered back to Jen and what she’d said. Even during the scene it had been replaying in her head. She needed to talk to her.
The lockers were quiet with the only sound being Sarah’s footsteps as she walked around, looking for her backpack. Once she got it, she walked to the shower and got in, turning it on and let the hot water cascade over her body. Sarah sighed and let her body relax. She was alone, finally. No camera, no unwanted eyes, no one or nothing that could judge. The hot water helped hide what she didn’t want to face.
When she was done, Sarah stepped out of the shower, a towel wrapped around her body. She was a little wet still and worked on drying her hair and winced slightly as she got to her hands. Her phone had an unread message - one from Maya. “Jen said she’d stay around, only if you’d like to talk to her. I said I’ll keep her posted. If you don’t want to talk to her right now, just text me back.”
Sarah deliberated for a moment but the decision was quick. She shook her head and typed her response, “Nah, you’re good. I’ll talk to her. I’ll ping you when I’m done so that we can carpool back.” She tossed her phone into her backpack and started walking to the director’s room. Maya was still around near the filming area and perked up when she saw Sarah.
“Hey you,” she said.
“Hey, just… just going to go and talk to Jen.”
Maya nodded and tilted her head slightly. “Got soap in your eye?” she asked. “Eyes are pretty red.”
Sarah nodded, agreeing quickly, “Yeah yeah, shampoo actually. Still burns.”
“I feel that,” Maya replied. “I’ll be out in the parking lot, okay? Let me know when you’re done.”
Sarah nodded and walked to the room. Before she opened it, she took a deep breath and steadied herself before opening it. Jen was sitting there, a pensive look on her face that broke into a small smile.
“Hey hi, thanks for coming back,” she said.
Sarah nodded, and tossed her backpack to the side before sitting down and looking at Jen. “I mean, I did tell you I’d be back, didn’t I? I’m like Arnie that way.”
Jen chuckled lightly. “I guess I was worried I was coming off like a parasocial fan.”
“That’s what you were worried about?” Sarah asked, a bit incredulous. Jen nodded and Sarah sighed and leaned back, “Girl, you complimented on my videos, sure but I made you talk and explain and promise that I’d be back. If anything you’ve not been social enough.”
“I mean, I kinda look up to you. You do stuff that I know I can’t do.”
Sarah shrugged, “You do stuff that I can’t even dream of. Trust me, you can do what I do. I can’t do what you do.”
Jen smiled wryly, “Is this the self-deprecation olympics?”
Sarah froze for a second and burst out laughing. “Oh my God, stop. See! If you were just a parasocial fan, you wouldn’t be calling me out.” She looked at Jen. “You’re okay. Now, tell me, how can I help? And not in the way where I can tell you “You’ll figure it out”. I know on good insight that you’d find it annoying.”
Jen rolled her eyes. “Fucking God yes. I’ve heard that all my life.”
Sarah looked at Jen and spoke gently, “Look Jen. You’ve got us, okay? You’ve got me. I’ll help however I can. Even if it means yelling at Carla for stupid shit, okay? I just need you to promise me something.”
Jen asked, “What?”
“Whatever you decide,” Sarah said, “make sure you take your time with it, okay?”
Jen nodded.
Sarah felt her hands start to tremble slightly and she tried to cover it up surreptitiously. She bit back the pain and looked back at Jen. She needed to leave. The witty, composed routine was taking all that she had left and she couldn’t crash now. She forced a grin on her face and continued, “Okay. Good. I’ll get going now. I don’t want to keep Maya waiting. I promised I’ll drop her off at the mechanic’s after I’m done.”
“Oh! I hope I didn’t make—”
Sarah sighed theatrically. “No, no you didn’t make the delay worse. Stoppit now, okay?” Jen smiled at that and for the first time, Sarah thought it felt real. “Good. I’ll see you around.”
As Sarah walked away, Jen stood up herself. Sarah paused at the door and turned around, “Hey, did you ever—, is the—” She stopped and shook her head, “Nah, it can wait.” She paused again and looked at Jen now. “Think I can get your phone number?”
