Wake up text to the FWB [mf] (inspired by recent events)

She knows I don't text unless I want something.

Last week, around two in the morning, I sent exactly three words: "Unlock your door."

Not "you up?" Not "hey." Just that.

I knew she was asleep. That wasn't an accident. I knew she'd wake up just enough to let me in, and I knew she'd trust me to come over. By the time she stumbled to the door and unlocked it, I was already there.

She barely had time to get back to bed before I was behind her. I didn't have much to say. I already knew why I'd driven over. I pulled the blanket away, turned her onto her stomach, and settled in behind her. She was still half asleep, still somewhere between dreaming and waking, and I could feel the moment reality caught up with her.

The room stayed dark the whole time. No lights, no music, no conversation. Just the quiet of the apartment and the sound of us moving. She woke up fully pretty quickly after that, but neither of us felt the need to fill the silence. We never do.

At one point I reached for her hair, gently pulling her head back, and the noise she made caught me off guard in the best way. I did it again later because I knew exactly how she'd react. After all this time together, we know each other's rhythms without having to ask.

Eventually I was done. I leaned down, kissed the back of her neck once, got dressed, and headed home.

I didn't text afterward. No apology, no "made it home," no "good morning." There wasn't anything to explain. We've known each other long enough that we don't need to narrate what happened or pretend it's something it isn't.

People assume friends-with-benefits arrangements are messy, but ours has never been. Sometimes I text, sometimes she does. Sometimes she unlocks the door, sometimes she doesn't. There are no expectations beyond honesty about what we both want. No pretending it's more, no pretending it's less.

That night was exactly what we both signed up for. Nothing complicated. Just another reminder of why our arrangement works.

I don't usually move that fast. Well, that's not entirely true, I move fast when it feels right, and something about her profile made it feel right before I'd even sent the second message. I saw she was online and typed "what are you doing right now" before I could talk myself into something more clever.

She sent me her address.

No hedging. No "lol this is so random." Just her building number and instructions to text when I was outside. I was already putting my shoes on before I'd finished reading it.

Forty-three minutes, door to door. I know because I was watching the time, trying to calibrate how eager I was allowed to seem.

She opened the door and I could tell that I was not quite as tall as my photos probably suggested (I always pick the ones where the angle's generous) but I could tell she clocked me and didn't mind. There's something about a guy who's solid, a little soft around the middle, comfortable in his own skin, that either works for someone or it doesn't. The way she stepped back to let me through told me it worked. I kissed her before I had a real reason to. It just seemed like the thing to do, and she kissed back like she'd already made up her mind about everything and was just waiting for me to catch up.

I pulled her shirt over her head and pushed her back against the counter and she let me, which is the thing that got me — she didn't perform surprise. She just let it happen like it was obvious. Plain black underwear. I don't know why I remember that specifically.

I went down on her right there on the counter because I wanted to and because I was curious what she'd do. She came hard and made a mess and didn't apologize for it and didn't look embarrassed and that's when I understood what kind of night this was going to be.

When I finally got inside her I stopped managing anything. We moved to the couch when she said her back was complaining and she squirted when she came the second time and I made some noise I probably couldn't defend if asked about it later. I wasn't sorry. I was proud, honestly. I kept going because she hadn't told me to stop.

I left around midnight. Her text came through before I hit the corner: you should come back sometime.

I typed back "yeah I should" and meant it more than it sounded.

She made it easy. I'm not sure she knows how rare that is.
