After Dinner. After Dessert. A Long Drive Home.
You’re in and out of sleep on the drive home.
Long, dark, country roads. No lines. Just a gray, narrow, twisted bit of gravel. My lights. The playlist. My hands.
One on the wheel. One on your thigh. Warm, where the AC is cold.
The sleeves of my white button down retreated to my elbow during dessert. And you didn’t think I noticed your eyes on my hands the rest of the night. When I held my drink. When I fed you dessert.
You’re in and out of sleep. A Lana-Del-Rey-Dey-Dream in the middle of the D-A-R-K.
And you’re having that dream. The one that makes you wet. The one that makes you moan.
You rouse a little. Did you moan out loud?
My warm hoodie that I leave in the car more for you than me, hugs your chest and lap. It smells like me. Feels like the opposite of summertime sadness.
The trees blur. Fade into a long open field. Lightning bugs drifting lazily until you can’t tell where they end and our stars begin. All the stars sparkle for you, it seems.
But that dream is back between blinks. And my hand is lit by the dash. And my other is steady, a few inches away from where you’re dreaming.
And you wonder how far we are from home.
