So when a man says he's attracted to other men, people don't always see it simply as a statement about his sexuality. They start questioning his masculinity, his identity, and sometimes even his worth as a man.

At the same time, there is an interesting difference in how male and female sexuality is portrayed in internet and pop culture. Female bisexuality or lesbianism is sometimes romanticised, sexualised, or even celebrated as something "cool." That doesn't mean women have it easy in real life — they absolutely don't, especially in a conservative environment. But men rarely get the same treatment. A bisexual man can be judged both offline and online, and his sexuality can immediately become a reason to question whether he's "man enough."

And I don't think this is unique to India. It's something men deal with in many parts of the world.

There’s a similar double standard when it comes to other expectations placed on men and women. A woman can say, "I want to work because I want to be independent," and it's often seen as freedom and empowerment. But if a man says, "I don't want to work anymore; I want to stay home," people can be surprisingly quick to judge him. Men are expected to provide, have a career, be ambitious and financially responsible. They're not always given the same freedom to step outside that role.

In a strange way, both men and women can be trapped by social expectations, just in very different ways.

I think sexuality works in much the same way. A woman being bisexual may challenge some people's traditional expectations, but a man being bisexual can be perceived as challenging his masculinity itself.

And that's the part I find most unfortunate.

Being bisexual shouldn't make anyone less masculine, less feminine, or less worthy of love. Sexuality is simply one part of who someone is.

Hopefully, as society becomes more accepting, both men and women will have the freedom to step outside these expectations without feeling that they have to hide a part of themselves just to fit someone else's definition of what a man or woman is supposed to be.
