A note from the mods
On behalf of the mod team, we’ve decided to call time on r/melbourneafterdark.
When this subreddit was created, the intention was for it to be a place for discussion and advice around Melbourne’s adult nightlife and sexual culture. Things like nightclub recommendations, sexual health resources, guidance for exploring kink and swinging communities, etiquette in strip or sex clubs, and harm-minimisation information for people navigating adult spaces.
Unfortunately, over time the subreddit has drifted away from that purpose.
The overwhelming majority of posts now require removal for rule violations, and the mod workload has become unsustainable. In a recent review, only a minute number of post submissions actually make it through and become live, whilst hundreds of posts were being removed due to rule violations or spam bot submissions. On top of that, comment sections have increasingly attracted harassment, creepy behaviour, solicitation, and content that violates Reddit policies.
The reality is that Reddit isn't a good platform for the kind of nuanced, safety-focused adult discussion we originally hoped this community could support. Even well intentioned conversations around escorts, brothels, massage parlours etc often end up difficult to moderate within the framework of Reddit’s rules.
Rather than continue fighting a losing battle with constant removals, reports, and bad-faith participation, we’ve decided it’s best to close submissions and lock the subreddit down.
For people looking for forums better suited to these discussions, targeted subreddits or platforms such as FetLife are likely to be more appropriate and sustainable than this sub.
Thanks to everyone who contributed constructively and respectfully over the life of MaD.
