Why is the mobile meetup.com web site so annoying

I use the meetup.com web site on my phone with some frequency.

Every single time I click on anything at all, two things happen:

  1. Meetup.com tries to access my location. I get a popup in Safari asking me if I want to send my location to meetup.com. The answer is no, I don't. All I'm trying to do is access my account and information about meetups that I'm already subscribed to. Meetup doesn't need to know my location. But it still requests my location every time I follow a link on the site.

  2. I get a popup prompting me to download and use the Meetup app. I don't need or want the app. The web site works fine. The popup doesn't even tell me what would work better with the app, it's just an ad for the app that I don't want. And it's not immediately obvious how to close the ad. There's no "X" button anywhere. You just have to kinda tap somewhere else, outside of the ad.

This is a horrible user experience. Does anybody at meetup.com use their own product? Do people there think this is okay?

Rule change: meetups are no longer allowed

Due to the huge amount of rule-breaking content posted here, /r/meetup is now focused solely on usage of the Meetup platform. Users are no longer allowed to post event advertisements and requests to meet up, and this includes links to events hosted on Meetup. This change is effective immediately (at the time of this post). However, existing posts about meetups will be allowed to remain as long as they don't break any other rules.

As a consequence, you can expect some additional changes:

  • Rules 2 to 5 will be consolidated
  • AutoMod rules will be updated
  • Posts will require moderator approval for the time being
  • Posts can no longer have the "Reddit meetup" flair
  • We will request the admins to switch the sub back to non-NSFW

For those who wish to meet up with fellow Redditors, then we recommend these communities instead:

  • /r/needafriend - for finding platonic friends
  • /r/MakeNewFriendsHere - same as above
  • /r/r4r - for both platonic meetups and dates
  • Lots of geographic areas also have dedicated subs that allow meetups

This is not a decision we made lightly as we are fully aware this will affect users who did follow the rules. We hope all understand why this change was necessary. Please let us know in the comments or modmail if you have questions regarding this change. Thank you.
