Stepping onto my soapbox to give dom/mes some unsolicited advice on a matter that keeps coming up. We often see posts from dom/mes lamenting that they are not getting any traction and wondering what they are doing wrong. Whenever I take a peek at their profile, I can usually diagnose the issue pretty quicky, because it's either they have a blank profile or a generic one. A blank profile can be an easy fix, but having content that is generic is a lot harder. A dom/me often feels like they are working hard by posting a lot of content, but a lot of that work is in vain if said content is too generic.

Generic content is content that could be written by anyone. A lot of findom subreddits are inundated with posts that could be interchangeable in terms of structure, voice, tone, and presentation. This type of content seems fine on the surface as it ticks the boxes and keeps the dom/me's profile active. But it doesn't land because can spot when someone isn't being authentic and is relying on well-played out scripts. As a dom/me, if your content sounds like everyone else, then it doesn't sound like you at all.

Findom is an extremely crowded market. As a dom/me, the ratio is not in your favour (generally) as there are far more dom/mes than subs. In this kind of environment, posting consistently isn't enough. Even being good or conventionally attractive may not be enough. In a market as competitive as findom, being interchangeable is just as bad as not posting at all. A key factor that separates the dom/mes who attract subs from the ones who don't is that the former are recognisable and distinct. Subs feel like they can get an experience from them that they cannot get elsewhere.

A useful way of testing if your content is too generic as a dom/me is this:

>Take something you've written like a caption or a post and replace your name with someone else's. If the content still makes perfect sense, then it's too generic.

This is where a lot of dom/mes get stuck without realising it. The instinct, especially early on, is to copy what seems to be working as it seems like someone is just learning the language of the space. However, imitation has a very low ceiling. You don't win by being "another option" - you win by being the only one who does it like you do. That is what a unique selling point (USP) actually is. A USP is something that carries your tone, your boundaries, your pacing, and your expectations. And, most importantly, something that would feel off if anyone else tried to do it. There are some dom/mes in this space who are so distinct that I can recognise their writing before I have even read the username. The reason for that is they create content that is distinct to them. They have taken the time to figure out their voice and what they have to offer the community and potential subs. They have done the work to craft out a voice and identity that can stand out against the many thousands vying for attention in this space. Finding that takes time and effort, and it's not something anyone can do for you. But that's often the difference between creating content that can capture people's attention and remain ingrained in their memory versus content that gets swallowed by the algorithm.

The kind of sub that many dom/mes claim to want (consistent, loyal, devoted, committed) are often highly selective. They need to have a reason to engage and invest in a dom/me, and that reason won't materialise if you sound like any other dom/me on Reddit. They don't just choose anyone to be their dom/me. A lot of dom/mes look at the state of findom and conclude that the issue is external. Too many dom/mes, subs hibernating for winter or even permanently, subs getting PNC, and the economy are all some of the reasons that have been thrown out. Yes, those issues are real, but they are not the whole story. Sometimes the solution to a problem often sits closer to home. Being interchangeable and generic in a space like findom as a dom/me can be a death sentence and scupper your chances of success. What's popular may not be effective for you, especially if it means you blend in with the many other voices saying the same thing.
