Women today and the lack of skills
I’m not here to talk down to women, but the younger generation has really missed out on much needed skills. I am speaking of home making, cooking, planning meals, a selection of good healthy unprocessed foods.
When I met my wife she was 37 and I was turning 51, she had zero cooking skills and after meeting her mother I understood why.
We drove to an Amish town and I picked up a 25 pound bag of hard white wheat berries, she looked at me all confused.
The next weekend, I showed her how to make her own flour from a hand grinder I had. I showed her how to make sourdough bread. She was even more confused because there was no sugar in the house. The only thing processed was a few spices I had. These were basic things her mother failed to teach her even though she was taught by her mother.
She knew absolutely nothing about meal planning or preparation. If it didn’t come from a box or jar, she was truly lost.
More confused, I did not buy meats from box stores but from local farmers, the same with dairy. I showed her how to make her own butter from raw dairy, watching the cream separate. A city girl going into chicken coops and picking up a few dozen eggs.
Again these are things her mother failed to teach her. I grow my own garlic, Siberian and elephant. I grow a lot of my own vegetables even today, as well as herbs.
So every year I buy a half side of beef eh about 2600 or so, I buy the whole Ribeye and cut my own steaks.
These are necessities women and men are not taught today.
A woman who is taught good skills can run a home efficiently and actually becomes easier once there is a pattern in place.
Until my wife had met me she had never held an iron. She didn’t understand why I bought coffee beans in bulk 5 pounds at a time. The same with meats in the end, it’s not only better for you it’s less expensive.
It was not my mother or father who taught me but my grandparents. The same with skillets and Dutch ovens nothing but cast iron in my house.
Times have definitely changed today and it’s mainly because of both parents working today.
Buying fresh meats you know what is in it how the cattle is fed, baking your own bread you know the ingredients, compound butters with herbs and more natural fat content.
My mother spaghetti was her specialty because it was cheap and easy but learning from my grandparents I knew at a young age what foods were bad and good. Every morning my grandmother got up at 4 am to prepare breakfast, at 6am there was a feast on the table.
Today one income homes are possible with the right planning and running an efficient home. You can actually eat better and cheaper with proper planning.
The above may not seem important but I’m speaking from nearly 64 years of experience.
