Hemorrhoidectomy 8/16/26
Hello everyone, 38 male very active …just wanted to share my journey thus far. I’ve dealt with hemorrhoids for several years and I can honestly say it was the most annoying deliberating thing I’ve ever had to deal with. Day in and day out I could not do any activities. If I would go to the gym for 10 min it would come out and be irritating. I couldn’t go on long walks, I couldn’t go to a club, I couldn’t go to a bar, outside was pretty much dead to me because I’d be miserable and in pain. The weeks leading up to surgery were horrible. So much pain so much blood and hems were thrombosed. Throughout reading all the horror stories that absolutely scared me, I just couldn’t live like this anymore. I ended up biting the bullet and doing surgery. Currently on day 6 and so for these are how my days went….
Day 0 - SURGERY DAY. Surgery was done around 10am and took about 40-50 minutes and I was done and rolled back into my hospital room. Not much to say about this day since I was drugged up on Dilaudid and Toradol.
Day 1 - first half in the hospital and had my first bowel movement and my God, I won’t lie it was the most painful thing I’ve ever had to endure. Pain was 10/10. Luckily, right when I had it the nurse put me on Dilaudid right away and toradol a hour later. Dealt with the pain no more than 5 min because the drugs sedated me heavily, but that 5 min stretch ooooff I was scratching the walls. Right after BM ended up being discharged and headed home. Not much else this day besides resting.
Day 2/3 - Took medication (norco/diazapam/tylenol) as prescribed throughout these couple days. A lot of resting and the only pain I was dealing with was walking or farting. Didn’t want to walk much. Farting only slight pain as it passes then sudden relief right after. Sitz baths 6-8x both these days with 2 baths to clean myself up. Farting blood and discharge.
Day 4 - This day was tough. I was going through Rectel Tenesmus. Meaning the sphincter is a persistent, painful urge to pass stool even when your bowels are already empty. So it’s somewhat a false alarm and happened throughout day 4 and 5. Numerous times had to run to the RR to see if I would have a BM. Eventually around 11pm at night, had my second bowel movement. Very little blood and discharge. I made sure I had it in my bath and let me tell you it’s a cheat code!!! Pain was 5/10 and lasted about 30-45 min. You feel pain for sure but right away relief from the warm/hot water. I really recommend anytime you have a BM do it in the tub or your sitz bath either way is fine. It will be messy but it’s so dang worth it. Other than that that was day 4.
Day 5 - Third bowel movement and again did it in my tub and very little pain. Little blood and Yes very messy but again it’s a cheat code. The only pain was it coming out for a few seconds but definitely manageable. The hot water eased everything for me. Walking around a lot more, constantly farting, still a lot of discharge, and still dealing with Rectel Tenesmus. I think dealing with that is the most annoying about these first 5 days. Because you just don’t know if you have to go or not and it’s painful. Pain lvl for that is around 5-7/10. Depending on the person I’d assume everyone is different with pain tolerance. And I must say my pain tolerance is somewhat low it is not high.
Day 6 (currently) - Woke up today night and day difference. No pain whatsoever. Had some mashed potato’s and chicken breast for dinner. First actual food in 6 days. Right now it was 11pm and I’m having that Rectel Tenesmus again. I feel like I have to go but I don’t. All day I did not feel this until about 10pm. Other than this, today was a fairly decent day. Not much else besides watching movies with my cousin laying on my side.
All in all….im so happy I did this surgery. It’s not AS BAD as everyone makes it out to be. Definitely PREPARE. Definitely RESEARCH. Definitely DO YOUR HOMEWORK on this post op recovery. It will help you tremendously. It did for me. I’ve read all the horror stories. I’ve read the stories with light at end of the tunnel. I’ve talked to family members who have gone through this procedure. I’ve used AI. Almost everything you can think of to research.
Day 1-4 I was on liquid diet. Didn’t eat no food only drank liquids including chicken broth.
MiraLAX will be your new best friend (it’s what I used and worked flawlessly)
Buy bulk pads or diapers…you going to need it.
Have a partner through this. Do not go through this alone as it can mentally drain you and put you in a place you don’t want to be. Have someone with you at all times to keep your mentally boosted and just in general the company.
All in all….so far it’s not as bad as everyone made it out to be. Yes it’s frustrating. Yes the recovery is not easy, but it’s all in your mind. I’m hoping to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I can see it now but it’s still a long stretch. I hope this helps anyone. Sorry I’m not good at writing things out like this as I’ve never done this before. Bear with me. God bless you all going through this. We will be ok. We will
Make it through. And we will have a better/new beautiful life ahead.
