In all honesty, the world is dying.

Overpopulation, disease, pollution, climate change - it all rules supreme over those who cannot afford a luxurious life above the surface.

Citizens live in extreme poverty, a heavy contrast to the rich and the government - living in a city full of skyscrapers, with medical devices that make them immune to disease that could seep through into society, and augments and modifications that make them basically invulnerable.

Factories are common, and much of the land outside of the main city is dead. Buildings are often rare to find,

As unrest began to grow within the poor community below, the government puts in research into automations - creating machines that look like humans to control the masses, and cause confusion among the people. A method of ruling by fear.

The rich and in power do not wish to fix their mistakes. They want manufacturing to continue, and would simply prefer to keep down those "beneath" them

Rebel groups begin to pop up, and political groups as well. The first few were incredibly bad, being so horribly hidden that finding them was as easy as just bribing them out.

Current rebel groups are almost unaccounted for, with most being basically collections of missing people.

It isn't uncommon for missing people to be classified as "political enemies". Just another tactic to keep in power.

And yet, people still go missing. All voluntary, it appears.

The iron gates did not creak when Vienna pushed them open.

That was the first thing that managed to unsettle her. The gate was old, worn, and rusted in areas, and yet it produced no noise. It should have made something, anything. They should have resisted the motion and announced the presence of another person.

And yet they didn't. They swung on silent hinges, as though they had not been affected by time. She dug her nails into the straps of her backpack, ears flattened back against her head in a clear show of fear. She persisted and made her way through despite it, carrying another bag in her left hand.

She pushed the gate closed, and glanced back at the road she had traveled down. Fog obscured the furthest parts she could see, fog that had not been there before. She frowned.

She turned her head back to look at the castle in front of her. It rose high, sharp points seemingly stabbing into the sky, instead of being outlined by the dull blue-grey. She wondered how anyone could have lived here for any extended period of time. The paper in her pocket felt heavy with the job that had to be done - simple housekeeping of a sense. Keep the castle in good shape, for "preservation of history", said the job paper.

She idled in front of the castle long enough, and made herself make way forward.

The second thing to unsettle her was the grounds. She expected ruin, ivy pulling at stone, moss coating rock left to the ground, weeds that sprouted from cracks in the path that she subconsciously avoided. Instead the path was clean, without any of the marks of general decay of a building left to nature. The hedges around and about were slightly overgrown, but other than that it was clear.

Even the little areas seemingly meant for flora were clean. Maybe she'd start a garden later on, give the place a nicer look.

She found herself at a courtyard, a stone fountain centered in the middle. Even for the fear that crawled along her spine, it was a beautiful place, all but lacking some tender loving care.

The front door rose higher than her, standing around ten feet in height, she guessed. The door was wooden, and heavy to open.

Out of routine, she knocked three times. Of course the knocking elicited no response, but it still felt nice to do so.

It took her a moment to dislodge it from its stuck position, and once it moved it swung open easy, taking her with it. She would have fallen on her face if not for letting her bag go and holding to the door with a near death grip.

She glanced at her bag on the ground and steadied herself, before scooping it up once more. She pulled the door closed as she made her way inside, and squinted to see in the dark.

The entrance was enormous and cold, the air smelling a little damp. She fished a lighter out of her other pocket, flicking it on. The flame just barely illuminated the space around her.

She raised the lighter to illuminate one of the walls. Portraits lined the stone, continuing until they stopped at a staircase that split both ways. The portraits were of men and women, in the fashions of other eras. Some proud, others blank.

One, at the bottom of the stairs, looked almost sad in a way.

Vienna set her bag down on the carpeted floor, the sound muffled by the material. She took the paper from her pocket, flicking the lighter off to avoid accidentally setting it ablaze while unfolding it. Once unfolded, she flicked the lighter back on.

“Dear Miss Hill,

Within the first corridor on the second floor, there should be an empty room for you to make home in. Below is listed the daily tasks of your job. If any further concerns, questions, or comments should arise, contact me immediately.

The name on the paper seemed to be obscured, the ink appearing to almost be watered down. She couldn’t contact the employer if she hadn’t an inkling of how to do so, but she most likely wouldn’t need to. On she read.

“Below are listed about sixty-eight tasks. Quarter them into the way you shall do them. Some do not have to be done every day, while others do. Take care.”

Vienna stopped for a moment at reading sixty-eight. Nearly sixty eight tasks to do?! Surely some had to be weekly, monthly, maybe even seasonally. Lords, she hoped it was less with the “about” part.

She haphazardly shoved the paper back into her pocket, and made her way up the stairs after grabbing her bag back up. The steps had the same carpet that the main entrance did, lining each stair, all but the sides close to the walls. Typical, it seemed.

She stepped up to the top step, and stared down the hallway. A window sat at the very end where two hallways split off on either side, illuminating a table that held a stack of what seemed to be books. She’d check those later, and find where they had to go.

She glanced over the doors as she made her way down the hall. Plaques sat above each, but the words were completely obscured by dust and the stray cobweb, and she could only make out a few words on each. She raised her lighter up to try and see if the light would help, but to no avail.

She found her way to one that started with a “G”, and made a guess that it said guest. She pushed the door open with little give, and looked in.

A table at one side, wardrobe opposite to it. A bed lay directly across from the door, with two windows on either side, covered by curtains that sat still. The air was stagnant, and it smelled strongly of dust. She gave a small cough, and set her bags down by the door. She’d put her things away later.

She returned to the hallway, closing the door behind her. She studied the plaques above the other rooms for a while, before stopping at the table at the end of the hallway. She dusted a hand over the books, and a thick layer of gray came off onto her fingers. She wiped the dust off on her pants with a grimace, and instead took to looking out the windows at the other courtyards below.

Almost the same as the entrance courtyards, however with more doors to the outside. One could be the kitchen. Lords, was she hungry. She’d give anything for a snack, or maybe even a drink about now. Something about the place just made her generally hungry, which was a bit confusing, but she paid no mind to the reasoning.
