My wife says she wants this dynamic, but i don’t know how to feel safe anymore

Looking for advice from people who have experience with the hotwife dynamic because I’m struggling with something deeper than jealousy.

My wife and I have been together for over 10 years. We recently started exploring a hotwife dynamic with a third. Before we started, I spent a lot of time thinking about what would make me feel secure. Surprisingly, it wasn’t exclusivity.

What I needed was transparency.

I can handle attraction. I can handle chemistry. I can handle emotional connections forming. What I struggle with is feeling like I’m not getting the truth.

When we first started exploring this, my wife was very open. She shared her thoughts, feelings, excitement, nervousness, and experiences. I actually felt closer to her because of it. It felt like I was finally getting access to parts of herself she had kept locked up for years.

Then things changed.

At some point she became convinced that what bothered me was her connection with this guy. From her perspective, I think she started believing that if she admitted to liking him, enjoying the attention, thinking about him, or feeling emotionally connected, it would create conflict.

The problem is that wasn’t actually my concern.

My concern was boundaries and honesty.

As time went on, I started noticing things that didn’t match up. Conversations were described differently than what actually happened. Details were left out. Contact was minimized. Stories would change slightly. Sometimes she would tell me something happened one way, and later I would discover it wasn’t exactly true.

When confronted, she usually doesn’t deny it happened.

Instead, her explanation is that she was trying to avoid conflict, trying not to hurt me, or trying to prevent me from overthinking.

The problem is that this creates the exact opposite effect.

Now I don’t trust my understanding of events.

A recent example involved communication with the third. We had discussed boundaries around contact. I later found out there had been more communication than I was led to believe. We agreed to keep connection alive but not too much to avoid strong attachments, every 3-4 days they can check in and text. She agreed but went against my boundaries and then acted like it was him who was texting her to avoid conflict with me. Again, it wasn’t necessarily the communication itself that hurt me most.. it was feeling like I got an edited version of reality. They were texting every other day, and even 2 days in a row a lot of days so they were texting all week. When i said the boundaries were slipping, she said she would pull back but never did. She told me she did, but didn’t. She just changed the story and acted like it was him who reached out and she was just responding, but really it was her who was reaching out.

Another thing she lied about was she made a mistake when we met with the third and told me she was gonna text him about it in a few days. We talked about what she was gonna say. Well while i was talking about it with her, she didn’t tell me she already told him. Then the next day she texted him, told me he texted her, and then she said they talked about it. She changed a bunch of details of what happened.

She says she wasn’t trying to deceive me. I actually believe that.

But from my perspective, repeatedly changing details, minimizing things, or giving partial truths creates the same result as dishonesty.

She doesn’t want to end things with the third. She says the experience has awakened parts of herself she had shut down for a long time. She talks about feelings of freedom, confidence, adventure, and sexual openness.

I want to understand that.

But when I ask deeper questions about what specifically she feels for him, why maintaining the connection matters so much, or what she’s afraid of losing, the answers often feel vague. It feels like she stays on the surface rather than exploring the uncomfortable parts.

As a result, I feel stuck.

I don’t actually need my wife to have “safe” feelings.

I need honest feelings.

If she’s attached, I want to know.

If she has feelings for him, I want to know.

If she enjoys his attention more than she’s admitting, I want to know.

If she’s conflicted, confused, excited, scared, or torn, I want to know.

What she tells me is that she has no attachments towards him but her actions say otherwise. I just want raw truth.

The uncertainty is what hurts.

Right now I feel like I’m being asked to participate in a dynamic that requires a very high level of trust while simultaneously feeling like I’m getting filtered information.

For those of you who have experience with hotwife relationships, poly dynamics, or open marriages:

Have you dealt with a partner who filters information to avoid conflict?
Were you able to rebuild trust?
Is radical honesty a reasonable expectation in these dynamics, or am I expecting something unrealistic?
How do you distinguish between someone protecting your feelings and someone avoiding uncomfortable truths?
At what point does a transparency issue become a bigger problem than the outside relationship itself?

I’m genuinely trying to understand whether this is a normal adjustment phase or a sign that this dynamic isn’t compatible with how I need relationships to function.
