Trip Report - Beloved August 2026
My wife and I made our fifth trip to BPM this August. It was a wonderful four-night stay in Playa Mujeres - BPM never disappoints with its hospitality and ability to relax a person. I wanted to give people understanding of what it was like, especially right now as the casita renovations are taking place.
We booked a two-story casita with the roof pool last October for a trip this August. We love the 2SCS - there is no better room, to us, in the resort. The combination of location, private pool on the roof, and the privacy is second to none. It was to be our third trip in the suite and we were super excited to return to enjoy our time on the roof.
Unfortunately, the only thing constant is change. BPM began renovations last year to overhaul rooms. The casitas were last on the list of rooms to be spruced. Whispers said September 2026, but others said earlier. The resort began renovations less than two weeks before our trip. All five beachfront were closed at once, and we knew that we were not going to get what we had booked, but were hopeful we could stay in one of the two casitas still open, Bella and Bonita. I had emailed BPM and received word that they would try to accommodate us, but we got the call from the resort two days before we arrived telling us that they could not provide us what we wanted. We were offered two options - we could move to a two-story at Excellence Coral, or we could stay at BPM for a swim-out suite with compensation. I explained that this would be a three tier downgrade, and asked them to do what they could to assist us because we wanted to stay at BPM - we didn't want to go to a big resort.
I received a call a few hours later that offered a compromise - a downstairs casita for three nights and move into a swim out the last night. We were happy to get that type of deal and we took it. While sad, we still were excited for the trip.
We arrived and were taken care of so well by the staff. I cannot thank everyone there enough - they really go above and beyond to help make your stay the best it can be. We were given a few perks because of our inconvenience, and we really appreciated that.
We stayed in one of the non-beachfront casitas and enjoyed it. The pool is excellent - much larger than I expected, and was wonderful at night or early in the morning for a swim. The outside can get very, very slippery so everyone needs to watch that when they use a private pool in the casitas. The room was fine - after going into the swim-out on our last night, it is very obvious of the improvements in the rooms, so you could definitely see where the casita was dated, and the renovations will do spectacular things to it. As of now, some of the TV stations did not work properly in the casita (not a big deal as we don't watch much TV, but may be important to some). The casitas had better air conditioning control - you could take the temperature down farther, which is important to me as a hot sleeper. That being said, the swim out was obviously aesthetically nicer, with a bigger television, updated room controls, and the like, so when those are updated for the casitas, I believe that they will be very comparable.
The beach was great this year - sargassum was low this summer. Was there sargassum every day - yes, but it was not very abundant. Most of the time, it was in the first one or two feet of the water, and once you got past that, you were in crystal clear water. There really wasn't a smell. On a few days, the particulate would stain the first few feet of the water, but that is to be expected with small matter in the surf. It did not bother us. It did not seem to bother most people, but I point it out because some people are very sensitive to the sargassum.
We were given a beach cabana one day for the inconvenience of losing our preferred room. It was a nice gesture, and we enjoyed relaxing on the big Bali bed with nothing obstructing our view. They brought a nice coconut filled with fruit to us during the afternoon, and we got our own sun products in the cabana. Would I purchase the cabana - I don't think so, but some may love it, so it is a personal preference.
The food was good this year. Of course as soon as we left, they debuted a new beach menu which looks amazing, but we were happy with the offerings we had. The breakfasts were great, and lunch on the beach cannot be beat. Dinner was good every night, but beware to some - the restaurants were all staggered in terms of closure - I guess because there was a low level of guests, some nights only provided two options in terms of a dinner restaurant. I imagine as the resort welcomes more guests, that will change, but it was sad to see the steakhouse closed on two of the four nights we were at the resort. I am not a picky person so I was very happy with my food, and my wife is gluten intolerant, and she had no issues all week - they take care of you so well with food allergies and intolerances.
We are in our 40s, and the only real odd thing that we found was not a ton of couples in our age bracket this past trip. We saw a lot of younger individuals around 30, and then a lot over 55 at the resort. Last year there were tons of people our age, and we had a grand time at the pool bar every day. This year, the pool bar really didn't have a great deal of persons interested in chatting. We met a few really lovely couples to talk to, but in the end I felt like a lot of people were just into being with their spouse, which is wonderful and expected. I wasn't displeased with the situation as my wife and I had so much quality time together, but the vibe was just very different this week, and it could be completely different the next time we go.
The construction was ongoing in the casitas. We saw the pools on the roof being removed and replaced. The work was not too loud - it was non-existent on the weekend. On the weekdays, there was some noise. However, it was about as loud as the noise from people on jetski's out on the water, so if you can tolerate one you can tolerate that. I myself was really upset with the amount of jetski's flying by really close to the swim zone this year. It appeared Aquaworld set up a location right next to Excellence/Beloved border, and my word they had people zipping by all damn day. I really encourage them to send people farther away from the swim zone - it was really aggravating after a while. I know this company needs to make money, but it seemed like the only beach they were bothering all the time was BPM.
All in all, it was a wonderful relaxing vacation. We cannot wait to go back and see the new casitas. I am hopeful 2027 will bring us a trip again.
