The speaker doesn’t know the listener was enticed to drop out and take a role at a competing neighbouring university due to being passed up for a fellowship. Since then, they have been competing for the same grants, criticising each other’s work; becoming rivals over time. While at an evening dinner during a conference, they bump into each other at the bar after not seeing each other for five years.
