This post is kind of tongue-in-cheek. I don’t normally celebrate National x or y Days. But I read about this holiday which started in the town of Esperantina, northeast Brazil.

Councilman Arimateio Dantas passed a law on August 8th that encourages men to give their wives orgasms. The law was his way of repaying a sexual debt to his wife when he realized he had not given her enough pleasure. (Self awareness, ftw).

Ultimately it’s a day about raising awareness for women’s sexuality. In Brazil it’s become a popular holiday, forums are held for the public to engage in conversation about women’s sexuality, as the holiday exists in part to help close the orgasm gap. Hey, all! I saw a film last weekend where one of the main characters, a woman, kept saying “do you know how hard it is for women to orgasm?” “It’s so difficult”. She reiterates that point on three separate occasions.

Because it was said so matter-of-factly, I researched this a bit more. It seems like only 10-15% of women have never had an orgasm. 70-80% of women “cannot reach orgasm via penetration alone”. Which honestly, doesn’t say much. Assuming PIV should be the primary pathway to orgasm strikes me as so outdated. For what it’s worth, what I saw indicated that 1% of men experience lifelong anorgasmia, 4% acquired or secondary anorgasmia.

While I would never deny that some women struggle to orgasm, and I want to tread lightly here out of empathy for women who have been discouraged from enjoying their own bodies or are engaging sex they don’t like. But I simply cannot relate.

I thought about all the juicy, immediate orgasms I’ve had. Sometimes completely spontaneous. And I thought of all the times I’ve willingly taken hours, days, to edge before giving in.
