Hand Making Cloth Diapers?
Hi there, I am curious if anyone has any experience / advice with sewing cloth diapers for themselves. I'm pretty into sewing and maintaining my own clothing, I'm also not wearing 24/7, mainly wearing at home, so it seems like a better deal to me to have some nice cloth diaps rather than to spend a ton on disposables.
Here is my research first:
From looking at rearz, it seems like you need three things: the cloth diaper itself, a waterproof elastic cover, and also washable liners. I am going to try to replicate these products on my own.
The cloth diaper I was looking at seems to be made of a thick cloth, and a velour outer. The booster pads are similar, but they are made from a thick cloth inner and a polyurethane laminate (henceforth PUL) outer. Finally, the diaper cover that I was looking at seems to be made entirely from that PUL material, with a Fold Over Elastic to bind the edges and give it some stretch.
Here are my questions:
What cloth material do you think the diaper itself is made of? I am thinking its probably just some sort of thicker cloth, but I cannot find anything so far. I am also wondering if the makers of these products put some sort of stuffing inside the cotton to give it that thickness - and if so, what?
Less specifically, do you think that I need all three items - the diaper, the cover, and the booster pad? Or can I get away with just the diaper?
Free pattern recommendations would also be helpful.
