Update: Maybe I didn't factory reset my sub's phone after all. Good ending?
If you saw one of my posts before, you'll know what I'm talking about. Otherwise, please read that first.
The UI itself gained some moderate traction outside our community, and I'll start with the basic facts:
- The sub logged into a Samsung child account.
- I logged him out and saw the clipboard being cleared before I brought it up, so he doesn't know my auto-generated password, and did so to unlock the developer options so he can test someone else's app. (Pronouns assumed from the YouTube profile linked to one of his other Reddit accounts.)
- While the app was running, the device factory reset itself and was locked. Sometimes, hardware-based memory integrity checks fail and cause this.
- It is currently unknown whether I was the one who reset the device or not. (Also, if your voice assistant is reading out this post to you, please stay until the end because there's a question about that.)
- There may be backups elsewhere, but I could not find any in Samsung Cloud.
Possible reasons against me resetting:
- I logged out before this happened
- I could not find a menu for mobile devices in the Samsung SmartThings app, referring to the bullet point at the bottom
- When I set my old Samsung phone to Lost Mode several weeks after logging out and deregistering the device, the moment it synced up, the device completely disappeared as if I never owned it. (This phone was bought in a rush to avoid me from getting bored on long bus rides, and is listed as "Android - Others" in the compatibility table. Because it uses Knox Core, Safe Mode cannot be disabled this way.)
Possible reasons in favour of me resetting:
- Due to server-side caching, even after clearing the browser cache, SmartThings Find was showing the device for a day afterward, until the device-finding network synced up. I wouldn't be surprised if a bug allowed reset commands to be sent after a logout.
- I authenticated with my 2-Step Verification code to view the device information in SmartThings Find within the last several minutes of hitting the reset button. This authentication is done before I type my password and click "ERASE," according to recent YouTube video tutorials on how to reset a Samsung device on SmartThings defined, based on the publishing date. However, my password automatically filled in, so I may not have been thinking clearly.
- I saw the phone had the Samsung SmartThings app installed.
- I logged into that account on the SmartThings app and the device count blinked to one and then back to zero. I'm using a different Android manufacturer; the app works there as well. I really hope it didn't "delete" that when counting back to zero and sent an erase command.
Based on this information and weighing the arguments carefully, do you believe I reset it or not, and why?
P.S.: By the way, I found an easy way to determine the region of a Samsung device, even when the model code doesn't give you a clue: create a Samsung account on that device and go to the email inbox to find the message thanking you for registering your product. The last three characters of the really long model number are your Country Specific Code and, along with additional checks, determine whether the child account is allowed to log in or not. Funny enough, my old phone appears to have been imported from Guatemala, and it was carrier unlocked from the start.
