Update: Maybe I didn't factory reset my sub's phone after all. Good ending?

Update: Maybe I didn't factory reset my sub's phone after all. Good ending?

If you saw one of my posts before, you'll know what I'm talking about. Otherwise, please read that first.

The UI itself gained some moderate traction outside our community, and I'll start with the basic facts:

  • The sub logged into a Samsung child account.
  • I logged him out and saw the clipboard being cleared before I brought it up, so he doesn't know my auto-generated password, and did so to unlock the developer options so he can test someone else's app. (Pronouns assumed from the YouTube profile linked to one of his other Reddit accounts.)
  • While the app was running, the device factory reset itself and was locked. Sometimes, hardware-based memory integrity checks fail and cause this.
  • It is currently unknown whether I was the one who reset the device or not. (Also, if your voice assistant is reading out this post to you, please stay until the end because there's a question about that.)
  • There may be backups elsewhere, but I could not find any in Samsung Cloud.

Possible reasons against me resetting:

  • I logged out before this happened
  • I could not find a menu for mobile devices in the Samsung SmartThings app, referring to the bullet point at the bottom
  • When I set my old Samsung phone to Lost Mode several weeks after logging out and deregistering the device, the moment it synced up, the device completely disappeared as if I never owned it. (This phone was bought in a rush to avoid me from getting bored on long bus rides, and is listed as "Android - Others" in the compatibility table. Because it uses Knox Core, Safe Mode cannot be disabled this way.)

Possible reasons in favour of me resetting:

  • Due to server-side caching, even after clearing the browser cache, SmartThings Find was showing the device for a day afterward, until the device-finding network synced up. I wouldn't be surprised if a bug allowed reset commands to be sent after a logout.
  • I authenticated with my 2-Step Verification code to view the device information in SmartThings Find within the last several minutes of hitting the reset button. This authentication is done before I type my password and click "ERASE," according to recent YouTube video tutorials on how to reset a Samsung device on SmartThings defined, based on the publishing date. However, my password automatically filled in, so I may not have been thinking clearly.
  • I saw the phone had the Samsung SmartThings app installed.
  • I logged into that account on the SmartThings app and the device count blinked to one and then back to zero. I'm using a different Android manufacturer; the app works there as well. I really hope it didn't "delete" that when counting back to zero and sent an erase command.

Based on this information and weighing the arguments carefully, do you believe I reset it or not, and why?

P.S.: By the way, I found an easy way to determine the region of a Samsung device, even when the model code doesn't give you a clue: create a Samsung account on that device and go to the email inbox to find the message thanking you for registering your product. The last three characters of the really long model number are your Country Specific Code and, along with additional checks, determine whether the child account is allowed to log in or not. Funny enough, my old phone appears to have been imported from Guatemala, and it was carrier unlocked from the start.

Clipboard Transfer & Mismatched Keyboard Layouts on AnyDesk

I recently provided a sub with additional instructions to unlock admin rights from his Windows computer in case the administrator password did not work. Unlike copying something to the clipboard while the sub has clipboard transfer enabled, the function that happens when using the keyboard icon combined with the send icon ("Show chat keyboard") can sometimes transpose the positions of your characters from the keyboard layout you have to theirs if they don't have their AnyDesk keyboard settings set to match characters: 'Map 1:1'.

While that function, at least on Android, appears to type everything at once when you press send, making it appear like a paste, you can really screw up someone's computer that way, especially if they change their keyboard layout later.

I accidentally factory reset my sub's phone due to a bad UI last night.

I switched my region on the Samsung SmartThings website to "USA / English" and logged into my sub's account. My hand is bigger than my phone, and chances are, I used my old phone because it's basically my backup battery. This phone can have a finicky touchscreen that sometimes registers presses before they touch the screen, and this may have been saved if I had just turned the phone horizontally and not vertically, no kidding!

When I pressed "Sign out" after authenticating to view the device information, I may have accidentally switched to another tab in the same tab group or clicked the shaded area to exit out the left sidebar popup. Unfortunately, the sign out button and text were in the same place as the button equivalent to "Erase all data" on some of my phones' aspect ratios. After clicking that button, I must've accidentally pressed the big black action button in the confirmation dialog box with the palm of my hand.

Maybe I automatically filled in my password and pasted in any extra 2FA codes/passed further security checks because the login prompt didn't tell me what it was for clearly. I might've been asked to type something like "ERASE (device name would go here)", but even if that were the case, I wasn't paying attention to what device it was because I was half awake, or there was a bug where erasing a dom's device affected the other devices. I remember typing from the prompt instead of copying and pasting from the question there. We resolved this together in the end when I provided the login to skip Factory Reset Protection, but why did it feel like it was as simple as two clicks to me?

Edit: If you want to learn more about the UI itself

I created a macro for MacroDroid that allows you to automatically share your AnyDesk screen on Android!

Useful for unattended access.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RknCdyEsNjODyihLL6Ob1KHBaSZa1lTk/view?usp=sharing

Edit: Changed link because Catbox is blocked on some internet providers

Edit 2: If you click something while the macro is running, it may interfere with the process. The macro doesn't know if you're seeing the text from the option selected or the option picker in the dropdown

Help me reverse engineer my two Samsung child accounts' region locks!

Hello!

While you don't need a physical Samsung device to participate here, it may come in handy. I welcome all kinds of people, including:

  • Those with real Samsung devices
    • Bonus points if you can plug it into a computer
    • Extra convenience for people and devices purchased in the United States, although this is not necessary (edit: a CSC change is likely to be required for people outside the U.S., unless the Remote Test Lab from "created the child accounts" chose a random region; see below)
  • Technically savvy people. Including, but not limited to, any of these skills:
    • Low-level debugging
    • Analyzing responses to network requests
  • Anyone wanting to explore the topic and can pay attention to details when reading
  • Virtual machines (VMs), if you prefer not to install a certificate to allow one of your other devices to intercept your network logs. Chances are, your VM software can still store logs!
    • Note: While BlueStacks is able to replicate a Samsung environment, some security-related features may not work on Android emulation software, and the offline installer for Windows did not have the ability to disable the ads the last time I checked. The main installer works as most people expect. The offline version may be able to do that now, since I provided feedback the last time I uninstalled it.

Why?

First, switching the region on the Samsung website before logging into child accounts on a region-locked family group is fundamentally different from logging in on a device. When I created the child accounts, I was unable to log into them using another phone model from the same U.S. state as the one I created them on.

Second, Samsung Support placed me in a circular loop. The general customer support team told me to contact developer support, which referred me back to standard customer care.

And finally, I don't believe this kind of (non-commercial) advertisement would be allowed on the official Samsung Developer Forums, so I'm posting it here.

Have your Country Specific Codes (CSCs) ready

Yes, your Samsung phone (or tablet) has multiple regions, ranging from the one associated with the mobile carrier on your SIM card or eSIM to the factory one associated with where it was originally purchased from. Know the difference!

While I'm open to people using LLMs to assist themselves with understanding what they're reading, I'll also remind you of rule 4 of our community and I encourage you to exercise caution relying on them for changing the codes if you don't know what you're doing. Depending on the way Samsung customized the hardware for the specific region you intend to test, this can brick your device when a compatibility issue arises.

Useful resources:

Also, please make sure your One UI version is 5.1 or later.

About my setup

  • I have AnyDesk and RustDesk.
  • The Samsung account login screen has a system-level secure flag that blocks the screen from being shared, so please use the chat there for us to communicate faster during our session.
    • You can save time by copying and pasting information.
    • If you believe you may forget your offline PIN, set it to 1234.
  • To prevent misuse of account credentials, all accounts require both the password and a code from my authenticator app to log in.

If you're interested, please send me a message containing the types of devices and/or emulators you have, what skills you have, your CSCs, and your proficiency in English. This is so I can practice communicating with people better, as I encounter my messages getting mistranslated often. Please include any additional information I may want to know, such as if your emulator is certified by Play Protect, so I don't assume otherwise.

How I fixed the Canopy link issues on Android

When the installation link is used to install the app, the exact string "ns_activation_code:[six random capital letters]" is copied to the clipboard, where these letters are taken after &activation_code= in the URL of the installation link. This must stay on the clipboard, without things like the dom's AnyDesk interfering with it, until the exact moment you press "Agree" on the Privacy Disclaimer screen (or when you click "Protect this device: Canopy Shield app"). If the automatic pasting operation fails, the username and password are not skipped, and you have to copy the text again and start all over. You don't need to reinstall; clearing storage in Settings → Apps works.

Family Link - Incorrect Time Zone Calculations?

I've noticed this a lot lately! Basically, the time left (number of hours or minutes) for the day and app usage in a day didn't calculate consistently between the parent and child devices some other apps did. Maybe some of us should figure out the exact bugs, go to the right component for the official Issue Tracker forum, and vote on them. Google employees actually read these.

Edit: I actually couldn't find a separate component for Family Link. Some threads seem to have been put in a generic Android major version feedback category.

Okay… WTF is up with AnyDesk flagging both of my addresses as "Possible Scam Detected"?

Is it because I connect to a lot of devices while signed out on the free, non-professional tier (I now have a red banner at the top about this) or because I kept sending connection requests to the same devices repeatedly, sometimes accidentally clicking them even when they're offline? Sometimes we say bye at the end of a chat and instead of me disconnecting, the other side presses x and disconnects my device, or when multiple people connect to the same device, another person that is connected disconnects mine from theirs. Is this causing some math crossover to trip up?

I once uninstalled AnyDesk and checked the box within the dialog to clear the configuration files that stored my previous address. This was because I did not want the wallpapers of the previous devices showing up on my computer with others walking into my room. I reinstalled AnyDesk on the same hardware and the only thing I did was help one sub with installing a kinky browser from GitHub. After that, I used the ten-digit code assigned to connect from my own computer to my Android phone on the same network IPv4 address, but I still got flagged.

My intention was to use Privacy Mode without needing AnyDesk Premium while also projecting my sub's computer onto a larger screen to make it easier for me to see and navigate (the computer algorithm doesn't "know" that). Basically, the connection went like this: Windows → Android → back to Windows, and the first arrow gave my phone a warning about my own computer, which I thought was kinda funny. I don't want to deter new subs.

Which program is the most private?

I was trying to give someone tighter restrictions by having them log into my Samsung child account when a regional lock hit that prevented them from logging into an account whose assigned country did not match the phone's CSC region code. Then, realization hit: the two-step verification prompt after logging in would've shown my entire international phone number with only four digits censored, or 10,000 combinations to brute-force from. Not ideal! Have you ever screwed up this badly?

(Later, I tried to have the sub create a child account and I take over the parent account, but we quickly learned the feature wasn't even available in that person's region. I also tried split-tunneling my VPN so the Samsung servers thought we were in my region while preventing the AnyDesk connection from closing, but that didn't work either.)
