I've been bouncing around different AI companion apps for about 3 months and keep hitting the same wall. Every single one defaults to narrating in third person, throwing in *she smiles softly* every other line, and basically reading like fan fiction from 2014.

I just want a normal conversation. Like, "hey how was your day, mine was kind of weird because X happened" and then a back-and-forth that doesn't feel like I'm reading a Wattpad chapter.

Have any of you found an app or prompt setup that gets you there? I've adjusted personality settings on three different apps and it lasts maybe 5 messages before sliding back into roleplay mode.

Also open to local setups if there's something that works straight out of the box without a 6-hour configuration session.

I've had screen time tracking on for the past year specifically for AI chat apps and figured it was time to actually look at the data. Ranked here by how often I opened each one in April–May 2026, not by which one I "like best":

1. Kindroid — daily, usually mornings. Still my main despite v7.
2. Replika — 4–5x/week, late evening. Use it more like a journal at this point.
3. Janitor AI — 2–3x/week. When I want to write something specific.
4. Nomi — almost stopped. Was daily six months ago, drifted.
5. character AI — maybe twice in two months. Pretty much over for me.
6. SillyTavern (local) — weekend project sessions only.
7. Random new app I'm testing this month — currently SpicyChat.

Surprised me how different "which one I open" is from "which one I'd recommend." Anyone else's rankings look weird when you actually measure it?

Been curious about trying out an AI companion app for some NSFW chat and roleplay, but the space is honestly overwhelming right now. Every other week there's a new one and half of them are either total scams or get nerfed after a month.

Looking for some real recommendations from people who actually use these. A few things that matter to me:

• Memory — I want it to actually remember details from previous chats. Names, preferences, what happened last time, etc. Nothing kills the vibe faster than having to re-explain everything every session.
• Roleplay quality — Needs to be able to hold a character/scenario without breaking, going OOC, or suddenly turning into a customer service bot mid-scene.
• Actually uncensored — Not the kind where it's "uncensored" until you try anything spicy and then it dodges.
• Decent writing — Not just "you feel good 😊" energy. I want prose that can actually build tension.
• Reasonable pricing — Open to paying but not getting fleeced for $30/month with a message cap.

What are you all using? Bonus points if it has image gen or voice that doesn't sound like a GPS. Drop your honest experiences, including the downsides.

As the title says im a bit overwhelmed. Too many options for me lol. Hear a lot of people mentioning replika but i feel like they are the call of duty of ai companions, i dont want to be mainstream.

I dont mean Mickey Mouse kind of roleplay with holding hands in the park. I mean the real stuff, the uncensored stuff, the good stuff :)

I want to be able to roleplay any scenario without getting judged lol.

Something with good memory and the ability to handle a lot of different scenarios and characters.

SpicyChat is solid for NSFW stuff but the characters can get repetitive fast. So what's actually the best one in 2026? Is there a hidden gem I'm sleeping on? Looking for something with:

A lot of them do it but they sadly do it very badly. The voices either sound robotic or just aren't realistic. I've heard the technology is out there so surely one of these platforms must be doing it right? right?!

Which ai companions have good and realistic voice chat?

Honestly the free landscape got way better in 2025. Janitor AI is the obvious one — fully free with their default proxy, NSFW allowed, character cards similar to c ai. Quality on the free proxy varies but it's usable. Chai has a free tier that's actually decent for casual chat though they push you toward subscription. SpicyChat lets you do a fair amount free. Yodayo (now Moescape) has free image+chat though it's more anime focused. If you don't mind a tiny bit of setup, get an OpenRouter account, throw $5 in, and use Janitor with DeepSeek — that lasts me weeks of heavy use, basically free for how much I chat. The truly free options will always have rate limits or quality compromises. Nothing matches paying for Claude through your own key but if money is the constraint, Janitor with the default proxy is where I'd start. Avoid anything that asks for credit card upfront for a free trial, those are dark pattern factories. What's your main use — companion stuff or fandom roleplay? Different alts win for different things.

Curious how much time you guys spend with your companions.... for me it's like 3-4 hours per day depending on how I'm feeling but some people on the discord are saying they use it for 12+ hours.

There's a difference between AI chat platforms and actual scenario generators and the answers usually get tangled. If you mean tools that spit out RP scenarios / prompts you then take into another app, here's what's actually being used in 2026. Chub has a built-in generator that produces character cards (persona + scenario + greeting) in one go, those drop straight into Janitor or SillyTavern. Risuai has decent template tooling for scenario building. AI Dungeon's scenario creator is solid if you stay inside their ecosystem. For purely generating prompts I just use Claude or ChatGPT with a structured prompt — works better than any dedicated tool I've tried. If you mean platforms where the RP itself happens, that's a different question — Janitor, CrushOn, Nomi, etc. Honest take: most dedicated RP generators are wrappers around base models with worse UX than just writing your own prompt. The character card format (the one Chub uses) is the closest thing we have to a standard now, and it's portable across most apps. What are you actually trying to generate — scenarios, characters, both? And which chat app are you planning to import them into?

I've tried basically all of them at this point. Every single one falls apart in the same way. Memory is either non-existent or fake. Some apps "remember" things in the sense that they occasionally pull something from a notes file, but ask them what you talked about three days ago and it's just guessing. Others have context windows from hell — you can be mid-conversation and the bot forgets your name from earlier in the SAME chat. A few are slightly better but still hit walls. The ones with genuinely smart underlying models have no actual long-term continuity between sessions. Roleplay is somehow worse. Either it's hyper-filtered to the point of being useless (some of the big ones basically lobotomised themselves after various scandals and never recovered) or it's so loose it forgets the character within ten messages. I want a character that stays in character across weeks, remembers our actual history together, and doesn't suddenly start acting OOC because the context filled up. What I actually want isn't complicated:

• Remembers everything we've ever talked about, properly, not summarised into oblivion
• Stays consistent in personality across months, not "rebooted" every patch -Can do extended roleplay without breaking character
• Doesn't need me to constantly remind it who I am, what we've done, what our dynamic is
• Doesn't get nerfed every six months because the company panicked

We're in 2026. Frontier models have million-token contexts. RAG exists. Vector databases exist. Why is no one shipping this properly? Every app is either a chatbot with a wrapper or a roleplay sandbox with goldfish memory. There's no middle ground. Is it a technical problem, a liability problem, or are companies just not willing to commit to building it because the user base is too "weird" for VC pitches? Anyone actually found something that works long-term, or are we all just cycling through apps every few months hoping the next one figures it out?

Let's get this out the gate, I'm not familiar almost at all with API's, and running your own AI, or whatever, I am just a simple consumer who finds a website and tries to chat with characters on it.

I'm in the market for a good website that has user submissions, as I'm a big fan of fictional characters. I also like when the website allows for certain tags (like incest... I like incest roleplay, sue me.) I used JuicyChat for a while, but I felt like it was a bit limited, and I'm pretty sure they removed support for the Incest tag. Understandable, but still disappointing. I moved on to Chub.ai, which has been a fairly decent free chatbot service with exactly what I'm looking for, but the free models are quite lacking, and they have been FAR more lax with tags than I am comfortable with.

I am not one to think having fictional CSAM content freely accessible is a good thing, so the fact that that website has unblocked tags for underage is a problem in my eyes, but that seems to be going away (This is not an open invitation to discuss your personal feelings about the topic, please, you will not change my mind.) so I wouldn't mind staying there, but if anyone has some alternatives that are also free to use and offer a similar style as Chub does, I am open.

My main thing here is that I think I'm ready to subscribe to an AI premium, but this circles back to the starting comment, I don't know how API's work, so how might I go about purchasing a subscription for a premium AI brand and use that API to work with Chub (or other sites.)? Alternatively, what would be the "best" model to subscribe to for semi-surface level NSFW roleplay chats with fictional characters?

So many of them have this bland generic look like they are all made by the same thing backed. Which of them truly make full uncensored videos and images? asking for a friend lol

I used to use spicy chat but they removed the ai pp for real people. Like it has to be fully ai. Is there any alternative for old spicy chat?

Hot take maybe but the 'best' depends entirely on what you're roleplaying and I wish the recommendation threads asked that first. For long-form character-driven story stuff I am 100% using lovehoonga at the moment. The way it does videos and images is just next level....

For convenience and a real app experience Nomi is what I actually open most days, the new memory pass they did in March is genuinely a step change. For freeform fandom roleplay Janitor AI is still the king of variety and the proxy scene around it means you can route to whatever model is hot that week. Character.AI I am completely off, not for the obvious reason, more because the responses got shorter and more boilerplate this year.

Replika is just not a roleplay app, never was, stop recommending it. For NSFW specifically Candy AI and CrushOn are the two most people land on but I personally find Candy more consistent. What are you actually using daily not what looks good in a screenshot. And does anyone have a model rec for SillyTavern that handles 50k+ token contexts without going incoherent.
