Looking for my first cage

It is time for me to get my first cage. I will be self-locked, no key holder. I am on the smaller side, so I'd assume a smaller cage is preferable. My main question is whether people have found metal or plastic better for the first cage. The metal ones look like they may be better for hygiene, but I'd imagine they are heavier, and they just seem intimidating. I know this question or a similar one gets asked a lot, but maybe I'm also just looking for encouragement to take the step.
