ABS safety after vapor smoothing

So, ABS is a safe plastic according to the wiki here, and it's also a plastic that can be 3D printed.

Another thing it can do is be put in a jar with some cotton soaked in acetone, and then the fumes will melt the surface, making it melt into a smooth polish, like an injection-molded finish.

Now on one hand, sanitation definitely improves with a smooth surface rather than tiny ridges (or even the micro-scratches of sanding).

Does anyone happen to know if there's any safety issues with that, or is it acceptable/a good practice?
