I have perfected the art of appearing content. By all normal measures, my life is a success. Great director level job. Beautiful home with exposed bricks in one of the most desirable places on Earth. I thought today was just a regular day. Roll out of bed, wash the face, walk the dog, rush to the train. Noticing everyone else trying to go unnoticed. Faces locked to screens. Sunglasses underground. Headphones full blast. All of us heading to our respective soul-devouring offices. I spill coffee all over my favorite jacket. No one notices nor cares if they do. Surrounded by people yet so atomized and contained. The hamster wheel never ceases. Everyday I think: humans are not meant to live this way.

Then I saw you. Yes, YOU, cute stranger. Hello. Hi. What are you curious about today? I see the glances and your quick aversions. You’ve probably noticed mine as well. But then we lock eyes. Exchange smiles. Thinking are you who I’ve been looking for? I get glances from pretty faces all the time. This was different. A chance meeting between two souls caught in the quotidian snare of modern life. Two inner beings about to escape to their own tiny pockets of a shared secret reality. Two of us who looked up on the train and locked eyes.

Destination midtown. You get off at the same stop and I look for any excuse to say something to you. An awkward comment about your tote bag suffices. We ditch our morning meetings for coffee in Bryant park. The world around us disappears as if it’s just the two of us on a deserted island. I pretend not to enjoy the way you gently touch my arm. By the time we need to truly head into work, I see the way you softly bite your lower lip. We both want to go for a kiss, but now is not the time. We save that for the dark speakeasy neither one of us can wait to cozy up next to each other over a drink.

At least, that’s how I like to imagine how we started our little rendezvous. The fantasy. The daydream. I fell asleep amid the flowers, and dreamed of you on a beautiful day :)
