From heavy consumer to creator – how has your view of dignity in BDSM changed?

For almost 20 years I was the classic hungry consumer. I watched endless extreme BDSM clips, took everything, gave nothing back — no respect, no names, nothing. I was just feeding the dopamine.
Now I’m on the other side, creating with my partner. And my perspective has completely changed.
I’ve realized that real pain isn’t entertainment. When it goes deep enough, it breaks anyone. That deserves respect. For me, dignity isn’t about staying tough or stoic. It’s about honestly doing what actually drives you, with someone who truly gets it.
I also lost a lot of dignity earlier in life when I buried my kink for years trying to be “normal.”
Has becoming more active in kink (as creator or participant) changed how you see dignity in BDSM? Especially in intense pain play?
Would love to hear your thoughts.
